Amir Khan to takeover Bolton?

Recommended Posts

British boxer Amir Khan and former footballer Dean Holdsworth are set

to complete the takeover of Championship club Bolton Wanderers,

according to reports.

Khan, an avid supporter of Bolton, has teamed up with former Trotters

striker Holdsworth and the pair hope to complete their £15million

takeover this week, which will see them replace Phil Gartside, according to the Daily Star.

Holdsworth enjoyed six seasons with Bolton and netted 39 goals in 158

appearances while Khan, who was born and raised in the area, has

reportedly agreed to hold his future fights in the newly named Macron

Stadium, Bolton’s home ground. It is thought that current chairman Phil Gartside will pay off the

remainder of the club’s debts and 47-year-old Holdsworth himself will

take up the chairman duties for the first time in his career.

The change in ownership will undoubtedly put pressure on current

first-team manager Neil Lennon, who is struggling to find form with his

current crop of players who find themselves 23rd in the Championship,

having won only one game in their past 18 outings.
Not sure I trust all of this story to be entirely correct...Gartside is apparently very seriously ill, and him stepping is not be a surprise. But although he is the chairman he is not the owner - that is Eddie Davies, to whom most of the debt of £172m is owed. He has recently said he cannot go on providing more money to keep the club going, which again would suggest a change of ownership is on the cards. Bolton have hired the man who took Abramovich to Chelsea to find new owners. But, without knowing what Gartside''s finances are like, £150m+ is a lot of money for him to find.

And QPR, that shining exemplar of how a club should be run, recently turned a similar amount into shares. And other Championship clubs owe sizeable amounts - the latest figures put the division''s total debt at £1.1bn, which works out at £46m per club.
How have they managed to avoid any kind of transfer embargo under FFP, because the debt is internal, and not external?
The type of debt in that sense doesn''t matter. FFP sanctions are triggered by losses rather than debt. The debt might be historical, ie accumulated before FFP, but as I understand it if the club is not taking on more debt and genuinely running at close to break-even then it should be safe.Bolton made a £50m loss in the season before FFP came in (2012-13) but according to a report in the local paper then slashed its wage bill in 2013-14 and so reduced the loss to under the £8m limit. I can''t find the figures for 2014-15, but Bolton may again have stayed safe.

I''m not entirely sure that this helps - but it does answer a few of the above questions and also suggests some wriggle room not least

"3) Are clubs no longer allowed to have losses?

To be exact, clubs can spend up to €5million more than they earn per assessment period (three years). However it can exceed this level to a certain limit, if it is entirely covered by a direct contribution/payment from the club owner(s) or a related party. This prevents the build-up of unsustainable debt.

Also a marvellous cure for insomnia.

So when you get banned and then re-register don''t you have to use a new email address each time, if so however many email addresses do you have now lol
As for Bolton surprised they are that much in debt but they are plenty of other championship clubs going to be £100m plus by the end of the season so they arent alone
