Do we need more wide players?

Recommended Posts

Having studied Parma''s threads where he talks about an over emphasis on

wide players in this country, I wonder if out and out wide play will be

restricted more to the just wing backs this season, with the rest of the

midfield concentrating more on keeping the ball and probing more

centrally.  It does not stop players like Redmond going wide, but his

effectivemess towards the end of the season was being played in more centrally by the

wing backs.

Last season in the top flight with Snodgrass was a

difficult watch (for me at any rate) and watching the match against

Haifa, Jacob Murphy continually tried to beat his man rather than just

get the cross in.  That kind of play is fine if the player is good

enough to beat his man and deliver - but the art of good wing play is

mixing it up a bit - and in the abscence of that wingers can be the most

frustrating players to watch.    Last season''s success in the end came

down to a competitive total football with less emphasis on wingers and

with a more cohesive all round playing style - some specialist wide play, yes, but not at the expense of  the rest of the team.

So with Dorrans and Johnson, we have two players who are comfortable on the left and who have both proved their quality there.  On the right we have Redmond, but equally, we have Howson who can play right too - and while apart from Redmond, these are not wingers as such, with good wing back play - which we saw from Whittaker and Olsson - specialist wing play may not be as important as just having a good competitive midfield across the park. It worked last season that way, under AN - and playing like that all season would have seen us top of the table.

So one for the tacticians really - is this a sensible approach for the coming season, or do we need to get more out and out wingers in?

Careful LDC, you are touching several raw nerves. Not content with being offered a retro kit in the club shop, there still seems to be a hankering among fans for retro football on the pitch. Didn''t someone just the other day issue a plea for AN to play the Murphy twins together? Is there a deep unconscious longing among City fans to recreate the days of Bill Punton and Gerry Mannion? And look how Hughton was constantly beaten with the inverted wingers stick. Dear me!

I think both Dorrans & BJ can serve us well as wide midfielders on the left. Dorrans has a good set piece on him. BJ is combative and has found his range with his shooting & scoring. I think BJ should be redeployed back into the middle of the part for this league.

We have Redmond, J & J and also Elliot Bennett as genuine wingers already at the club. All 4 can do the job.

If Neil things Josh, Jacob and Bennett can do a job this season when they didn''t really do so last season then I''ll agree with you.

Think we should sign another left sided winger even if this Alonso bid is legit.

Keiran, AN in his formation doesn''t really play wingers he plays midfielders out wide and occasionally brings in a winger if there is the need in tactics - which is very seldom. Redmond will get game time but the player on the other side is usually not an out-out winger.

If Redmond got injured or if we were chasing a game - J & J and EB in my mind would be up to it.

We have enough people waiting in line without adding others.

Redmond played on the left in his opening season. Could he do a job there if no one exceptional is signed ?

Brady = not exceptional.
