The original statement by Ms. Apisuk was emailed to me by a Norwich supporting bar-owner friend in the north-east of the country.

 

He had clearly convicted the players out of sight and predicted a long spell in the Bangkok Hilton.

 

I questioned his assumption that the girls involved were actually underage. His reply was an affirmative, "Well, they always are."

 

Either he knows something we don''t or that is pre-judgement par extremis.

 

Also, if this is the view of an ex-pat Englishmen, then how is your average Thai thinking?

 

Apparently, a big thing is being made of this incident in some circles out there and some are baying for blood. It is viewed as much more than just another case of wealthy professional footballers being their typical selves when filled with drink and conceit. Loss of face is involved. This is a country where a person can spend a lifetime in prison for the "crime" of  lese majeste (insulting the monarchy,) and insulting the country is viewed with the same importance.  

 

As I said in my opening statement about the Apisuk statement, "If true, there is mileage in this." 

 

As far as the players concerned are involved, they picked the wrong country. Let''s hope for their sakes that they didn''t pick the wrong girls.

Paul, prostitution is actually illegal in Thailand, believe it or not. The issue now is the actual ages of the girls involved though.

 

Also, nothing was leaked. The players made a video of the incident and broadcast it to their friends. Without this video the incident would be dead and buried.

Ha. Do I? To a certain extent I wish you were right, but alas no. Climbing the age-scale now, unfortunately. I prefer the booze.

 

In actual fact, I do spend a lot of time there, but only in the winter to avoid our cold.

 

It''s a lovely country in so many ways and I have a lot of friends there (mostly English.) The Thai people are mostly very nice, the food is great and the climate superb. I embrace the living outside culture. God was showing off when he made Thailand. The sleeze is in certain areas and can be avoided, as can the ladyboys.

 

Not all wonderful though. Corruption abounds, it''s getting expensive there now and the roads are a car crash (or rather a motor bike crash) waiting to happen. Dreadful carnage on a daily basis and I once saw a traffic cop directing cars with a bottle off Singha beer in his hand. 

 

The Thai mentality is vastly different from our own, which is why this footballer incident could turn out to be a time-bomb.

The entire thing is tistasteful.

I would be incredibly embaressed and angry if any of our players were to promote themselves to friends or otherwise doing the same.

There are so many reasons why. Without even going near the moral issues to begin with I''d want to know what sort of monitoring, education, support and guidance the set up gives to younger players. They are old enough to know better but they may not be aware it has happened before, and at their club.

I''d then want to know who else at the club shares the sort of attitude that thinks racism or displaying such a degrading attitude towards other humans is ok?

As mentioned before, Thailand has a long history of sex tourism as well as poor human rights and corruptness. However, even here there are plenty examples of ''kiss and tell'' episodes if this turns out to be that.

This is before we touch on any supposed legal issues.

It''s just a horrid situation for any fan of any club, and generally is just another issue to be thrown at the feet of the wider footballing community.
