Lee Darnborough appointed head of recruitment

Recommended Posts

So we have a new man for the role (I make him about number 36 in the last 5 years.

Personally, I don''t understand why McNally has taken a gamble on him when he could have got a proven star for the role. Tom Cavendish was the obvious appointment here, but yet again, we go for the cheap option.... ;)

Anyways - he was head of recruitment at Burnley last season but struggled to get anyone in due to their 20k per week wage ceiling apparently.

Website below is not exactly known for being on the pulse, but I actually heard this on Twitter last week from someone involved with Burnley (long enough ago though to be fairly sure that this story isn''t based on that tweet). I do believe this to be true.

No not confirmed, but Burnley press were reporting it two weeks ago... As I said, I think this is probably legit.

As suggested in yesterday''s @lancstelegraph, Lee Darnborough has left Burnley as part of restructure. Understand he will join Norwich City

His job will be easy.  Ther''s no pressure to buy big.  We aren''t going to buy £10m plus players imo, we aren''t going to buy any expensive premiership cast offs, because we already have premiership quality in the squad, we are only going to get freebies or bargains or up and coming young players from lower leagues.

I came across this from when he joined Burnely from West Brom:Now 35, he was a teenage goalkeeper with Oldham and made the first

team bench on one occasion, but had to call time on his professional

player career after a serious wrist injury. Remaining in sport, he

gained a sports science degree at Leeds University and during that time

played part time for Garforth Town.

Having graduated he joined ProZone, the company that analyses player

performance for several clubs including Burnley. That was in 2000 and he

also had short spells working with Bolton and Aston Villa before landing a job with West Brom in 2004.

For the first five years he was the Head of Performance Analysis but

in June 2009 was promoted to the position of Head of Technical

Recruitment. During his time at the Hawthorns he''s worked for Dan

Ashworth, their Sporting Technical Director, and for managers Bryan

Robson, Gary Megson, Tony Mowbray, Roberto Di Matteo, Roy Hodgson and

more recently Steve Clarke.

His appointment at Burnley was sanctioned during the time Eddie Howe

was manager but his arrival next month has been supported by new boss

Sean Dyche.

Dyche said: “I have had some good discussions with him and it’s a

similar model to what I had at my previous club. Some of his thoughts

are similar to that, so it’s nothing I am not familiar with and he knows

player selection is my final decision and that of the staff.

“He’s aware of that and I think it will work really well. It’s the way,

in my experience, a lot of clubs are looking now because as a manager

you are very time bound. Time at the training ground has changed

radically in my time. The days of in and out of the training ground

quickly are not like that anymore.

“We do DVD analysis, pre-hab programmes, weights programmes and all

different things. The manager’s time has got harder to spread around so I

think it’s a really good thing for the club moving forward.”

He added: “We want as much information on targets as we can, never

more so than we have to move out of the Premier League money and make

sure we are acquiring targets that are suitable for the club and can

help the team move forward.  “It’s still not an exact science,

the ins and outs of targeting and buying players, but the more you can

put into the process, the better chance you have got of a better

outcome.”  Chief executive Lee Hoos sees this as an important

role and said: “As the business of football gets more and more complex

there is a greater need for intelligence and specialisation and this is a

direction the club needs to go in."He looks, with that analytical background, as if he will fit in well in the football committee or whatever it is called. From that list of players posted higher it seems he has a nose for lower-level talent available cheaply or free. Just now, though, that is not generally what we need. And despite McNally''s comment about looking mainly in Britain, I imagine we will still be looking at some overseas targets.

Oh by the way.

A genuine good luck for this season from Burnley.

Its tough up there but I''m sure you will adapt quickly as you''ve already got the nucleus of a Premier League squad.

Little point belittling pro zone and stats;  it has an essential part to play in the professional game;   I wonder how long before football does the level of tracking seen in rugby where sensors detect drop in energy levels leading to an increase in errors,  lost points and injuries so more timely substitutions?

however I digressm  it WILL be part of the assessment story - together with video and match obeservations - ie traditional scouting.

Mind you if I was to rely on either just ProZone / stats or Tom Cavendish who would this forum choose?

Any club would be daft not to use the stuff. But in terms of player recruitment, I don''t think it is the best way forward, compared to actually watching a player play football. Ronaldo (the original, proper one) was notorious for not covering much ground in a match and I once saw that a goalkeeper covered more ground in a match than him. Would that put people off of signing him? Similarly, would Prozone pick up the little pieces of magic that a flair player can produce? And how would it analyse them?In terms of scouting and recruitment, watching a player play football is more beneficial than looking at his stats, in my opinion. Even though Brentford''s new post-Warburton structure sees player recruitment based on statistical data.

LOL of course they did Tom. To be fair though, hardly shocking that Hethersett Athletic Reserves Under11s couldn''t offer you a more sizeable fee for your valuable services.

What have they done with Adam''s dice & Weeja Board

Seeing the cr@p he signed last summer they must have formed the major part of our transfer policy

Cavendish, you''re full of $hit. Everyone knows you''re lying so why keep pretending? If you had been offered a head scout deal, a chance to progress your career through the football league, and potentially become head scout higher up the ladder, and you turned it down because you weren''t happy with the package, then you''d be a moron. As you dreamt up that fantasy, you''re a deluded moron.

first got into football scouting it wasn''t for the money. I did it

because I thought it was an interesting thing to learn more about. I was

able to do it because running my own business allowed me to be flexible

at times. Managers and chief scouts were happy to let me pick and

choose what I wanted to do.I have my own business interests, a

family and I want to stay in the local area. I wasn''t going to give that

up for less money, less job security and a lot more time away from my

family.

I can see the queue forming round the block for your "insight" Tom.

"So what do you think about that defender Tom?

"Well he plays in defence, and tries to stop the ball going into the net"

"Genius, thanks for the in depth analysis Tom, here''s a pay rise"

You say it was an "interesting thing to learn about" yet you learnt absolutely fvck all, as your "scouting thoughts" posts are all moronic drivel stating the most obvious points that Stevie Wonder would have no trouble seeing.

Basically, we all know you''re talking $hit. So stop, it''s boring.

However, when checking on potential signings at the request of a manager I would later receive a call asking whether it was worth taking further, so you have to keep it very concise. None of the players that I have been asked to watch were worth signing so they didn''t.Sometimes a manager would be looking for a particular type of player and would ask for suggestions. I would then write a report detailing why a particular player should be signed. I would also include background information.Whether or not you believe me is entirely up to you, but you should stop being abusive towards people.
