Set Pieces

Recommended Posts

Although I thought that the performance yesterday was fantastic, I was rather disappointed with our quality of set pieces. Many of them seemed to hit the first man, or if they made it into a good area, were headed clear comfortably. Not sure if the issue is the ball in, or if it''s more to do with movement in the area. Just feel being dangerous from set plays is a big asset for a team who win so many corners and free kicks around the box.

Neil was doing his nut in on the line. Wes, who had a good game otherwise, was worst offender. Try getting the ball over the first man at corners.

Maybe Dorrans should have a try, isn''t he supposed to be good at dead ball situations?

When did we last score from a corner ? Our centre halfs must be the lowest scoring in the League. Most of our corners never reach the penalty box, infuriates me.

Agreed Mervyn.

Any positive thoughts on the game my man?
Defending set pieces is a concern too. We looked uncomfortable yesterday.
Totally agree and has been an issue all season. The trouble is you always leave the opposition feeling they can get something no matter how dominant you are in open play.

Canary King - it wasn''t that long ago - Johnson at home to Wolves to be precise.

We have of course scored a decent number of goals from corners this season - Hooper at Bournemouth, Jerome at home to Bolton, Martin at home to Leeds, Grabban at Ipswich, o.g at Blackpool etc.

Completely agree. Set pieces are poor. This is probably the main reason why on several occasions our goals for do not reflect our dominance of several matches.

We had an enormous number of corners yesterday, - the Canaries World commentator was counting them, yet not one produced anything of note, and I can''t remember when we last scored from a free kick. In fact, with Redmond temporarily seeming to have lost his ability to cross, we are fairly toothless with the ball wide out. Even Jerome''s goal was scored from a run, cut in and low cross. In fact Olsson was a really dangerous player going forward.

Sadly we seem also to have forgotten how to defend corners. Ruddy missed a corner in giving a goal away. What was worrying about it was the lack of defenders near him.

It seems that teams have learned how to block our progress through the middle - it took a touch of magic from Wes and Howson to score the first. If teams learn to defend compactly, and then hit us on the break (- it nearly happened yesterday, then we have to improve our dead-ball technique. Perhaps we have also to consider someone like Howson or Dorrans to take them. They seem to have accuracy over a longer distance.

Norwich are consistently aiming for the near post in an attempt to get a flick-on from a runner. The opposition team realise this, stick a man on the near post and block off the runner, meaning the corner looks terrible and Wes gets s**t for not being able to take corners when it is actually the entire routine that is failing.

Havent you noticed

Wes takes corners on one side Dorrans the other

Not sure why particularly Wes as his are cr@p

Could have something to do what else does he do at corners as his stature makes him in effectual and we do not have the tallest team in the league as it is ?
Bollocks, at no point this season has a runner got in front of the first man for a flick in. Both wes and Redmond struggle to clear that first defender on over 50% of the corners they take
Notice the phrase ''block off the runner''?
Now, think what that could possibly mean and try and connect it to your point.

Best delivery from set pieces this season has been from Gary O''Neill. Injury has prevented us from enjoying O''Neill''s steady midfield influence.

Just look at the corner by the Derby player that led to Ruddy''s error, ball put into a dangerous area causing problems.

Don''t know why it''s so difficult to beat the first man?

Also agree on O''Neil, from what I have seen of him he puts in a good delivery.

Bring back Simon Lappin...

Every corner I have seen Dorrans take, it is on the money and into a dangerous area.   The corners from Wes against Forest looked poor - for whatever reason.

Cant find any data on where we concede our goals but we have scored 18 from set pieces this season,  which doesnt feel that bad

Given we have only let in 43 goals (most of which seem to be from counter attacks)  I am not sure we have let in more than 18 from them ourselves.   Proportinally we would need to have let in 10 from set pieces to conceed at the same rate as scored;   which feels closer.
