The answer for me is that we need to (re)introduce the ‘benefit of the doubt’ favouring the attacker.  For var, lines drawn should be much wider for the defender and narrow for the attacker.  Level is onside, the toe of a boot doesnt, for me, constitute the player being clearly ahead of the defender.

The only sensible answer (other than getting rid of VAR entirely).

Given the limitations of the technology the lines should have greater thickness to compensate.

I don't know, it looks pretty level to me... We had another similar goal a couple weeks back that looked as suspicious if I'm not mistaken?image.thumb.png.daf2ff3ceb7bedb50a1e855ea37b071d.png

Bit of a basic error from Sainz to not hold a little, but it does look pretty marginal on that. I personally would rather see these sort of goals given.

It was well managed in that despite his previous tendencies he decided to actually keep our best player on the pitch (funny how Sarge was able to do 90 mins today)

football is indeed a simple game.  Me thinks Wagner finally realised the total disaster he created on Tuesday and even he knew not to do it again. So from that aspect well managed - pity about the other numerous matches we have thrown away

  4. I think this one was particularly galling as we were exceptionally dominant for the majority of the match and really should have been absolutely out of sight.

I do understand the massive over analysis of the substitutes given the result, and it has to be said the same thing has happened several times this season, but really the team was so absolutely profligate going forwards I suspect that gave Wednesday a boost in itself. IMO Duffy should have been on immediately after we conceded that first goal.

Definitely two points dropped rather than one gained, regardless of the result we would have accepted "on paper".

Sargent off in the 60th and Sainz in the 89th.

    What we thinking?

We had at least two absolutely clear opportunities after that and god knows how many before. Not sure the subs can be blamed for not winning the match today.

  6. There really are some absolutely cringeworthy posts on this thread.

6 games to go and all to play for, even given the fact our two best attacking players, and arguably our two best defensive players, have been out for long periods of time this season.

Get a grip, and enjoy the ride because I have no doubt there will be at least one twist between now and the end of the season.

I'm still not completely onboard with Wagner, though of course can only support the improvement he has made since he plumbed the depths.

Since the Blackburn game when he most definitely should have gone, we had the Watford debacle, two 1-0 defeats at West Brom and Millwall, (points simply thrown away by inept decisions) and the dreadful Southampton performance.

Recent performances and results are helping, but he still makes some bizarre changes even if he finally seems to have realised that putting players in their best position gets them playing better; and he's definitely not certain to be in charge next season regardless of what league we are in.

Well clearly "most definitely" is wholly the wrong choice of phrase, as has been vindicated by the phenomenal improvement since Webber departed, which has been at least as good as you would expect with an excellent managerial replacement.

I do get it though - it is a common theme: (Farke's first season anyone?) people became very anti-Wagner, felt he was responsible for our poor performances, and should have gone, and now getting fully behind him would be the equivalent of admitting this was the wrong call. This isn't something many people seem to be able to do.

Interesting you use the term "recent results", as I would like to know how you define this? According to NN we are averaging the magic 2 PPG for the last half a season. If you think about it, that is actually wholly remarkable considering the tragic run of injuries we have sustained to key players.

I enjoy stats when there’s a point to them and you know how they were calculated.

For instance if you can see that your team had 80% possession but barely left their own half then you’d know you need to sacrifice some of that to play riskier passes to try and create chances. If you’ve had 40 shots but not 1 on target you probably need to buy some decent strikers. Xg just seems to be plucked out of the air by an algorithm that’s being fed numbers that are clearly so open to interpretation that it’s largely meaningless.

One interpretation is that xG is just another useful statistic, the importance of which is hugely overstated by some people who see it as the gospel truth.

The other interpretation is that Gunn is actually a very good goalkeeper.

  9. I personally think it's less down to the anthem itself, and more to do with the fact it's generally looked down upon to have a strong English national identity these days, especially following Brexit.

When some people, some of the media and/or politicians, generally consider flying the Cross of St George to be an indicator of someone being a bigot or worse it's hardly surprising some people no longer feel a particular sense of pride at being English?

Was it only me that thought Sargent might have strayed offside for that pass? It must have been very close.

I think he stayed behind the ball pretty comfortably, it was actually not a great ball from Sainz though!
