Style question: how are the names going to be printed on the back: arched over the number, or horizontally (NFL style, as you might call it)?  I have a strong preference for the latter, but maybe that’s just me.

  2. Did you see the penalty award to US today? Do you think it was a penalty and if so why? Ref didn't give it until VAR team called her to review. As it happens the Dutch defender's foot was high to try and intercept the ball and caught the US attacker, but only after the ball had hit the US player and was bouncing out of play. So accidental contact, and no bearing on the outcome of the attack. Yet VAR still gives it... I think the US got 5 VAR penalties overall in this World Cup. If VAR hadn't ruled so often in their favor - and with so many weak fouls - they could have been knocked out by Spain, France or England before they even got to this final with Holland.

  3. I’d say the main difference is they can pass and cross the ball accurately. Soccer isn’t a big sport  here in the US per se, it’s on a par with softball, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, athletics and basketball, but the huge difference is college  / university level sports is in a different league in US compared to Europe.

All large US universities offer “free” tuition and scholarships for sports which is a four or even five year intensive training and league structure to prepare students to go on to “professional” sports like NFL, MLB, NBA / WNBA, etc etc.

Many of the better European players also take advantage of that as opportunity as well, but if it’s one or two players from your squad v’s all 20 from the US squad then the better technique and fitness and tactical savvy will come out.

It’s not just running more miles and sprints, it’s making accurate passes at the right time, and creating space to pass into, and marking your opponent so not to give her a free header.... oh and score the penalty kick if you get one. 😞

  4. So the US win 2-0. No shame in that for the Dutch, who must be pleased to have finished up runners up.

My overall impression of the tournament?

    1. VAR is a hot mess and it has totally destroyed games; let the referee referee and only call on VAR for egregious errors.

    2. The US team can pass the ball, and the other teams can't. Overall the ball control skill level displayed was shockingly poor.

Was it entertaining? Yes to a degree, but overall I was left with a sense of frustration. Very little is achievable when passes are under hit or over hit, or hit out of play, when possession is lost immediately from a throw in etc. There were several moments of excellent play and skills, but there is a considerable way to go before these ladies reach the skill levels of their tennis and basketball sisters.

  5. Yes I agree with you there Pete. Hopefully we’ll break that association this time. Another issue is a quote in the Pinkun which was something like “which we will wear at home games”. I’d be pretty annoyed if the team runs out at Anfield in a change strip.....

  6. I hope that "V" collar is not indicative of what is on the home shirts. IMO Errea got it absolutely spot on and then horribly wrong with our first season and third season with them. And then last seasons was a classic. Note the subtle use of white in the first and third kits  BTW... I think it was that lack of subtly in the middle kit that caused a lot of comments about a rushed "crayons in a box" design - and yes that was before that insomnia inducing season started 🙂

  7. Baseball really isn’t a game to be watched in a stadium like London Stadium. You have to be close to the pitcher and batter to appreciate the speed of delivery and the tension of strikes and balls. The only place I can think of that is as bad is our infamous Oakland Colliseum, but at least that has the advantage of great weather and pretty decent food and beer.

And the A’s play in yellow and green and have no money and so are always the underdog, good times are had by all we we do win - and we do win a surprising number of games given our payroll v’s the big spoiled brat Yankees or Red Sox, the Man United and Liverpool of MLB.

  8. Is there a hint of a black trimmed collar on that teaser? Also beside yellow being lucky in Asia, green is the color of Islam which is also a big deal throughout South East Asia and obviously the Middle East (so we really should become a more famous club internationally than we are)

  9. FWIW Coca-Cola isn't banned in New York but "supersized" servings were for exactly the reason it was encouraging over-consumption of sugary drinks and contributed to a rise in obesity and diabetes. (The courts in New York later struck the ruling down)
