I could have written the script...
Highland Canary replied to Salopian's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
Its in the audited accounts. details in the purple canary thread. Basically we have a 2m cash shortfall at the end of season as a result of the 11m external debt we have to repay this season. The banks have indicated they are willing to lend 2m against next seasons TV money.
There will be a budgeted cash outflow for players in January in arriving at the short term funding requirement in the Summer. Let''s hope with the savings from player outs in January and the small unbudgeted COC run, we have enough for one quality striker. Without it the Championship beckons - but with Austin rated at 10m, perhaps we should keep the money in the bank and look forward to a local derby again. -
I think Hughton should have been more positive - certainly in the last half an hour. Reading were there for the taking. I worry if we go with just one up front against Sunderland and Wigan we''ll need 6 points from those two games. Can''t see points anywhere else this year.

Which RB for united?
Highland Canary replied to Redders Right Foot's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
Whittaker taken to the cleaners today. I''d go for Elliot Bennett. -
The 'Plan-A or nothing' Team
Highland Canary replied to Robornio's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
As poor a game you''ll see in the PL season. The Wes song at the beginning of the game the highlight. Thought Pilkington both when he was thro the middle and on the wing disappointing. Would have thought some fresh legs earlier might have made the difference, even if Hughton made like for like changes. Sunderland at home will be a massive game. -
Reading Predictions
Highland Canary replied to Rudolph Hucker's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
1-3 . Reading will win soon; we seem like ideal candidates. -
Without Lambert this club might not be in existence today. It is difficult to argue that anything Hughton might achieve could eclipse such a feat. Notwithstanding this fact nor Hughton''s much improved budget it will be a truly remarkable achievement if we were to stay up this season. Let''s hope so.

the right wing dilemma (snodgrass vs bennett)
Highland Canary replied to technika's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
I''d like to see Bennett''s pace back in the team. Equally, I think Snograss offers offensive threat that we need. I''d be minded to bench Pilkington who fades in and out of games. -
Reading will score quite a few; I don''t think we''ll out score them. My prediction 3-2.

Three worse sides than us?
Highland Canary replied to nutty nigel's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
Can''t get to three. Possibly Southampton. Reading and certainly QPR will buy themselves out of trouble. -
Atmosphere tonight
Highland Canary replied to HampsteadCanary's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
Felt and sounded like WHL... For the first 80 mins at least! -
Paul Lamberts heart must have a sank
Highland Canary replied to H4H's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
He might have viewed the match as an opportunity to keep City in the cup thereby prejudicing our PL status. -
Team for Stoke
Highland Canary replied to lake district canary's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
Whittaker - who I thought played well last night - in for Martin. Otherwise, as we started against Villa. Stoke one of those must win home games. Anything less than a victory will see us pulled back into the mire. -
"Wigan and Norwich after Norwood"
Highland Canary replied to Bws Cat 's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
Looks like the strategy is to identify young players with potential and get them signed up. Not all will come through and I don''t see this player being as a starter based on his career to date. -
I''m minded to agree with Purple. I enjoyed last night. It would not have affected my decision if the price had been higher. Equally, I don''t share the view that had the price been say £20 the match would have sold out. We do not have a tradition - over recent years at least - of large attendances in cup competitions. Even at £20 I''d be surprised if we were to sell out against Villa. If we are to believe McNally''s rhetoric of the club being run as a ''mutual'', he would be using all of our cup matches to hook the next generation, kids for a quid/ family promotions - just like Cullen orchestrated so successively pre- and post- the opening of the Jarrold. As Purple points out it''s not that long ago that we were getting only 16k in Europe.

What team for Villa Q/F?
Highland Canary replied to BlyBlyBabes's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
Lambert doesn''t care about cup matches at the Carra so team doesn''t much matter. -
Would you sacrifice Hoolahan for Morison v Stoke?
Highland Canary replied to willo's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
Absolutely not. Wes was superb against Villa. Morison a anonymous tonight. -
THE DRAW
Highland Canary replied to Officer Tillys small Willies (Nigel, lappy)'s topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
I''m sure Messers McNally and Bowkett will want the ground full of City fans for that one! -
Atmosphere tonight
Highland Canary replied to HampsteadCanary's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
Certainly felt like WHL. Pretty quiet in the City stand tonight but Pearce and Pulis seemed happy about something. -
Superb game tonight capped by the penalty save.
I think you guys are completely missing the point here. It''s all well and good saying players like C.Martin, Lappin etc, but the sad fact is that from a value perspective they''re not worth a huge amount and therefore even if we can find buyers for them, it won''t improve our ''striker'' kitty by a huge amount. If we genuinely want to buy a quality striker then we have to potentially considetr selling players who are closer to the first team to do so.I''d argue that virtually our entire front line could be sold (Holt aside), as Jackson can''t score for toffee at this level, Moro is so far off the boil he''s virtually frozen, Kane is crocked, Vaughan is already on-loan to the end of the season and no-one thinks Martin is good enough...If we can get 3 mil for Moro, 1.5-2 mil for Jackson, 750k for Martin and 1.5 mil for Vaughan, we''ll have close to 7 mil (along with any remaining budget we already have), maybe another 500k for Lappin and 1 mil for Ward, and we can then buy a quality partner or two for Holt. If Kane is fit again he can be kept as a cheap backup as well.I''d rather have 2-3 real quality strikers, than 5-6 poor to average ones...
Perfect analysis. Free the wage budget to be able to afford quality.
-
There are clearly bit players like Lappin, Martin and Ward that will get little if any chance under Hughton so could go. A quality striker will cost serious wages but may well make the difference between relegation and 17th. That being the case I would ship out Morison as well and invest as much as we can in some quality. If we''d had better quality in front of goal we might well have comfortably clear of the bottom rather than in our current situation.

Returning to the disclosure of the club''s legal claims against both Lambert and Villa, I''m still quite surprised to see the disclosures under contingent assets. Under FRS 12 contingent assets should only be disclosed if the ''inflow of economic benefits is probable''. If the directors had not wished to disclose I''m sure they could have used the prudence concept to justify to the auditors their reasons for not wishing to disclose. After all, if the contingent gain was only ''possible'' and not ''probable'' the directors would not have been permitted to disclose in the notes to the financial statements. Typically directors would seek to limit this type of discssion in the financial statements as much as possible not least for the PR reasons we''ve witnessed over the last couple of weeks.
