Sunflowers were a successful venture for me last year. They were very easy to grow, just sow the seeds in a tray or in the ground and thin them out later as they grow quite quickly as they are large shoots. I grew one flower the size of a dinner plate but the others were the smaller type, they were in the same packet so goodness knows why that happened. Had good Sweet Williams , Asters, Dahlias without much hassle but they needed constant watering and feeding. that is as far as I went this year, next year will be interesting as to how well I can grow other things.

Thanks IF for the advice, will keep it in mind as my elderly neighbour has a garden full of well established plants and we have a good relationship in helping each other out, gardening wise, that is. It is a long flat plot both front and back so am having to build a rockery just to give it some interest. Got a bargain at B&Q yesterday they were selling off their garden arbours and arches before the new stock somes in, got £25 quid off, quite pleased about that and worth taking a look if it is something you are looking for. I will have a go at the seeds next year for a start and pick up shrubs where I can, as IF advises and in about ten years should have a bit of a show (hopefully)

Sadly, I have been told much the same as Shrimper regarding Naples, but a holiday is what you make it, I didn''t go there but Florence, Verona and Rome were spectacular for the history and buildings. Shrimper, where were your previous photos taken, was it Bangkok, I once braved a tuk tuk and was nearly gassed from the petrol fumes, no wonder the traffic police wear masks. The photo of the glass floored building was brilliant, I wouldnt have walked on it but a really good photo, Reminds me of the pathway around the mountain in China which has a glass base, that would really send me round the bend.

Just a tip, I am back from the Sunday Market Boot sale and have picked up about 10 Gardening Magazines, some still in the polythene covers for the fantastic price of £1.75. As they are priced at £3.45 each and I also was given them in an organic carrying bag, I am very pleased and know what I will be reading for the next few months. I find reading about gardening matters online is OK but printing out the pages and taking them to the greenhouse becomes a bind after a while but taking a mag is preferable. They are last years mags but gardening is not something which changes much over the years and the info is still relevant.

No 3 looks like Dicentra, (Bleeding Heart) a pretty early flowering shrub, look it up, it is documented. I agree on the Bamboo, looks like it need pruning back quite severly Last one, ornamental grass, had some in our previous gravel garden, quite expensive to buy and will get its colour back next season.,

One of my favourite memories was looking down on the Statue of Liberty from above, (quite green)then the aeroplane turned and we went almost upside down, hearts in mouth, still a moment to cherish and never forget.

Right, they are the lillies, my mistake. I know to cut them in half in the spring to get extra plants but of course they are the same variety. What I need is to go to a Gardening group to swop some but think I will wait until next year. Thanks for the info about the pots, we had huge plants this year, in the shade of the house so we now know where they like the best.

Just a question for Shrimper and others if they can help. I saw Shrimper has Hostas in his garden, now I moved some Hostas into large planters this year from the garden, they were the best they had ever been but have now died back. Would it be best to leave them where they are or to replant them back into the garden over winter.

Writing about restaurants previously, I wondered if others have visited Raffles in Singapore. We went after the refurbishment several years ago. We went to the famous Long Bar, very nice, polished floors littlered with empty pea nut shells. While we were there two ladies who leant back in their wicker chairs nearly went for a burton when it almost overturned. Had the obligatory Singapore Sling, tasted like sherbert. Didnt care much for Singapore, the humidity did not suit.

Oh yes, the rain, the thunder and lightening when we were on the plane, never been so scared. Once there, it seem to rain overnight so we were lucky. The pilot said that it was a short runway and they had to reverse thrust. A local told us they had an near miss the previous week, so we were just pleased to get there.

Funchal is not for everyone but until you go there, how would you know?. The disco on the top floor of the Savoy was for the older generation, not for anyone wanting younger pastimes. Did you go on the sledging down the hills, not that entertaining with the men holding their hands out for tips demanding payment, sort of spoiled it. However, eating locally caught fish on the Rock seas edge restaurant was an experience if not exactly to our taste.

A memory we had in Madeira in Reids, we didnt stay there but at the Savoy further downtown. We like to dine at as many famous restaurants just once, so we dined at Reids. We walked into an Agatha Christie Poirot type venue. Crystal chandeliers, men in white dinner jackets, women in cocktail dresses, waiters immaculate and tables pristine. However, two elderly ladies didnt like the wine they were given to try, their table was beside our table and were severely chastised by the waiter who said if they did it nest time he wouldnt let them try it again. We were aghast at his cheek but the elderly ladies loved it and were glowing in his praise. Really amusing in to see ho these waiters earned their tips.
