  1. Agree. Pukki is no longer the player he was in previous seasons for us and if he signs the new contract I can only really see him warming the bench. Although I agree Idah doesn’t really deserve a start, I would rather he started ahead of Pukki as if we fail to get promoted this season we won’t have much money to spend on a replacement and so I think we need to concentrate on developing Idah and Sargent rather than continue treating Pukki as first choice

  2. I would have been happy with a point as we were playing a team on a very good run, and so I was actually expecting defeat. I think the impact an og can have on a side usually depends on what the score line is (had Millwall been 3-0 up at the time I doubt it would have had any effect), and as it put them behind I think that may made the difference

I have to say I’m very impressed we’ve beaten a side who have done really well recently, and were unbeaten in 11 home games

  3. Although I don’t know of any ideal players to sign (I don’t follow players at other clubs), here are my thoughts on the different positions:

GK - Although a while back I did see some say they think McGovern might still spend another year here, I find that hard to believe as he will be 39 this summer. Krul is out of contract next summer, so I think he might be sold to lower the wage bill and generate some funds. However, if he is I think we would probably only sign an experienced free agent to replace him, to save money

FB - Aarons is out of contract next summer and I’m convinced he will be sold, as I can’t see him signing another one. Although Byram is great when fit, I can’t see him being offered another one because he’s so injury prone. Although I’ve heard Mumba is playing more as WB rather than a FB, I still think he’ll replace Aarons next season if we fail to get promoted. Although some think Giannoulis might be sold, I’m not very convinced as it would mean we would have to sign two. I do sometimes wonder if Sorensen might be converted to a FB though, as that seems to be where he plays most

CB - I was surprised Tomkinson was our only CB sent out on loan, as we have several coming through. Although there are rumours Omobamidele is being tracked I can’t see him going yet as we have a lot of issues in that position - Hanley ageing, Gibson out of contract next summer (although he is starting to look like he was two years ago now), and Tomkinson only just coming through

DM - McLean has signed a new two year contract, but I don’t think Gibbs is ready yet and I’ve never been convinced by Sorensen either (and I do wonder if he might be converted to a defender)

AM/WG - I’m convinced Rashica will go, but I think Hernandez and Dowell will get offered new contracts. With Rowe, Nunez, Sara, and Tzolis as well I don’t think we have any major issues there. Springett, who has already looked good is also out on loan this season

ST - We will need to sign a new one. As if Pukki signs the new contract I can only see him as a backup, and Wagner still needs to work on developing Idah

I have to say I think Sara and Nunez were ideal signings - young midfielders who are already first team level. Although Nunez hasn’t stood out much yet, I do believe he will come through. Sara’s already looking great though

  4. Although he really should have scored the chance he missed today, I do have belief he can come good. We know Idah has over 60 appearances to his name, but we have to remember less than a quarter of them have been starts and you can’t expect a player to do well by giving them about 15 mins a game. It’s just like expecting someone in the starting XI to do well inside the first 15 mins

I know he was given a 5 year contract but I think it was because Wagner wants to work on developing him as he sees that he still has the potential to become good (he’s 22, not 32)

    ...still RVW.

Brown was a cheap and nasty 400k signing.

RVW was £8.5m snd was as bad so on the VFM scale RVW wins

In comparison to asking price, I think RvW is definitely the worst one to play for us in the time I’ve supported the club. However, I wouldn’t give him too much criticism

In the past few years there’s been quite a lot of belief on here that Hughton’s defensive style of play just didn’t suit him and that had he played under a manager like Farke he would have done much better. I think he also won the golden boot in the Portuguese first tier the season before

That was also said to be true of Tzolis, that he didn't settle in England, but I guess his struggles at Twente have perhaps made him reassess.

I think Tzolis was more humiliated by his asking price. Like you’ve said though he only turned 21 last month and was still a teenager when we signed him, and so I’ve always had belief in him. Rashica was already 25 when we signed him and will be 27 this summer

People seem to forget how young he actually is, he's only just turned 21, way too early to write him off.

Problem is I'm now wondering what Wagner could do with Rashica

As it stands probably not a lot, as there’s strong belief that he doesn’t want to play for us anymore. Might change if we get promoted though

Having not sold him in January, I find it hard to believe we're actively freezing him out for not signing a new contract, but under the circumstances it just makes sense to only use him if we really have to, when the focus needs to be on giving Idah and Sargent the best chance to flourish.

Although it’s only supposed to be down to a calf injury, if he has already rejected the new contract I think Pukki must be dropped to the bottom of the pecking order. This isn’t as a punishment but because like I’ve said in the other thread, I think it’s essential to try and get Idah and Sargent going this season as if Pukki does sign the new deal I can only really see him warming the bench, and if we fail to get promoted this season we’re not going to have much money to spend on a replacement this summer

  9. There was a lot of question over Pukki being dropped for Idah the other night, but I think was the good decision by Wagner. Pukki has been a legendary player for us but I’m afraid if he does sign the new contract I can only really see him warming the bench next season. If we fail to get promoted we’re also not going to have much to spend on a replacement for him this summer and so Wagner needs to get Idah going, hence why he was offered a new contract. Idah needs game time and so I think Wagner should be playing him regularly, as I no longer see Pukki as quite an important player to us as he has been in previous seasons

  10. Krul has been a great keeper for us but he will be 35 at the end of the season and his contract will expire next summer. However, he is also now making a lot of serious errors compared to the first few years of his career with us and so I think his time as the first choice keeper is up. When Smith dropped Krul for Gunn earlier in the season everyone was saying how much of an improvement Gunn was and that he should stay as first choice, hence why we were all so surprised when Wagner brought Krul back in

    Gunn for me

  11. Although Sinani is good enough for the Championship I think it would be better to sell him whilst we can still get some money for him as I can only see him being offered a new contract if we fail to get promoted, as he’s nowhere near good enough for the PL

I don’t think we’re short of options - Hernandez, Dowell, Idah, and I think even Sara can play there, plus Rowe’s on his way back from injury

  12. In the 18-19 season how much did Buendia cost us? - £1.8m originally, eventually rising to about £5m. How much did Krul and Pukki cost us? - Their wages. What was the outcome for us at the end of the season? - Champions of the league

What they have to know is that “breaking the bank” isn’t the key to success, it’s making the right signings

Unfortunately they have turned up tonight, as they’re already 4-0 up. Would be hilarious if they were being held or behind though, as they’re playing a team in a relegation battle

  13. Signed summer 2020 after relegation from the PL, and has good Championship experience. Not exactly a bizarre signing as during a spell in our last promotion season with Pukki and Idah out injured, he provided good cover for them. The only reason he didn’t get much game time was simply because he was behind the other strikers here in the pecking order

People were saying that no one would take him, but I was fairly sure they would as he’d already been linked with several clubs and he’s good enough at Championship level

Surely whether we keep players or not is dependant on whether we go up or stay in the championship? If we go up, I'm sure Pukki would more than consider another year here.

I think it varies between players. We would always want to offer Pukki a new contract as he is proven in the PL, but whether he signs it might depend on whether we go up or not. Sinani would probably sign a new contract either way, but I think we will only offer him a new one if we fail to get promoted, as he is only proven in the Championship and would probably be a waste of wages in the PL. I think Dowell would be offered and sign a new contract either way

  15. Pukki - really hoping we offer him a new contract

Dowell - did well under Farke’s tactics two years ago, and looking like he will under Wagner’s too. Was never against offering him a new contract

Hernandez - was against keeping him, as it was looking like he was never going to get back to the form he was in during Farke’s first promotion season four years ago. He’s also started to look like he might do well under Wagner’s tactics, but would give him a month or so to see how he does before offering him a new one

Sinani - did well in this league for Huddersfield last season. Was looking poor, although did quite well last week. Personally I’d only offer him a new contract if we fail to get promoted as I think it would be a waste of wages in the PL

Hugill - not in Wagner’s plans. Really hoping we sell him this month whilst we can still get some money for him. I think there are some smaller clubs who would buy him - Reading and Rotherham have been linked

McGovern - I think he’ll retire this summer as he’s been working on becoming a coach and is currently 38

Hayden - for us to buy him he has to play a certain number of games and we have to get promoted. Out injured again, so can’t see him playing the required number of games. Injury prone

Byram - decent when fit, but too injury prone

Would keep Byram and Hayden if they weren’t so injury prone
