Of course this raises a question over why Villa can appoint someone much more quickly than Norwich.  Villa I think only ever had one person on their shortlist (I assume they had indeed been warming Gerrard and / or his agent before making the decision about sacking Smith).  They were therefore able to focus all their resource on that appointment.  Norwich however with three candidates to keep warm are having to spread things more thinly, which does take up a lot more resource.  Given Norwich probably didn't have as much resource as Villa in the first place this has slowed things down considerably.

The Villa CEO, Christian Purslow, was the Liverpool CEO previously and is friends with Gerrard from that time.

I feel he was itching to get Gerrard in and was just waiting for a bad bit of form from Smith to have an excuse to do it. Gerrard had a clause in his contract that if a club were prepared to pay a certain amount of compo he could go, so it was a really easy deal to negotiate - seems they didn't speak to anyone else at all.

The club have surprisingly given the statement that they would not do their business in their media a la Spurs and  avoid an embarrassing story developing, have now given two separate briefings to the the press.  The first on Saturday was fair enough, but the one yesterday that was being released at exactly the same time as TalkSport went live with their "announcement" was definitely against the supposed "getting on with it quietly" strategy, but served to further query the media story.

I doubt the club said anything to TalkSport about Lampard. It was probably info they got from one of their presenters who is either friends with Lampard, or someone close to him. The fact that Harry Redknapp, who is related to Frank Lampard, is a regular on TalkSport is probably a clue to where any such info may have come from.

While an overreaction from the OP I do find it interesting we haven’t announced anyone yet and what that means for the decision/negotiation process thats been going on behind closed doors.

Farkes fate was already decided before Brentford, that’s pretty clear. There also seemed to be media rumblings we already had a replacement at least at initial stages lined up last weekend.

Now there’s all sorts of noises about different candidates interviewing, one of which wasn’t even available when we sacked Farke.

Villa have sacked and appointed someone between us doing that. Not saying they are better, just an observation they have been as ruthless and decisive as we looked like we were going to be.

This started off looking like a decisive planned change and now it does feel a little like this maybe wasn’t as well planned and executed as the initial dismissal seemed.

I think the media were actually making educated guesses last weekend, rather than having any clear information. Norwich have been particularly cagey about the whole manager search and let only minimal details be known when Farke was sacked.

I think many assumed that Webber would have a man ready to go, but then it was quickly updated that Norwich hadn't had official talks with anyone before Farke was canned.

They used the international break to give themselves some breathing room to not get involved in negotiating someone to come in, while Farke was still in the job. I presume this was to make sure there were no leaks and reports being leaked of Norwich having lined someone up to take over before the Brentford game was played. That game was vitally important and I'm sure Webber wanted to avoid any off the pitch distractions.

Whether that is the right or wrong move is debatable. While unseemly to have been going to other managers behind your current manager's back, it is also a practical move. However, with no players around to train until today (and I'd imagine today will largely be fitness work as is the norm after a holiday period) it was less necessary to have a man ready to step up immediately. The fact the club announced that Steve Weaver would run training also shows the club were fully aware that they may not have anyone in before the players returned.

Nope. They said hope to announce by Friday and in any event them saying that doesn’t make it acceptable for it to drag on into next week.

It moved from 'back end of the week' to 'weekend or beginning of next week' at least a couple of days ago now.

A day or two slip is hardly anything to panic about. I presume Villa sacking Dean Smith may have meant a slight delay in their timetable as whoever they wanted to speak to might have also wanted to speak to Villa.

The last bit of appointing a manager is agreeing backroom staff and dealing with compensation. If the rumour is that Lampard wants Joe Edwards from Chelsea then it may be the haggling to get him out of his current Chelsea deal is taking a little while to sort out. Norwich aren't just appointing a head coach, they need his assistant, first team coach and head of performance as well.

If Norwich have agreed everything in principle, then the new head coach can already be getting on with match preparation for Southampton and will be feeding into Steve Weaver anything he wants him to work on. Usually though in training patterns the beginning of the week is general ball work routines and the match prep stuff comes in the last couple of days.

  4. I rate Kabak - he was thrown in the deep end with Norwich and none of the centre backs have looked particularly great and all made mistakes etc. Worth remembering that Kabak had zero pre-season so went from May to September without playing a single game, even a friendly, and was massively lacking sharpness. Throwing him in against Watford was a mistake and it showed. As he's played more he has improved and was very good in the Burnley and Brighton games in particular.

He has shown he is very good on the ball and is a good passer - a modern centre back rather than an old fashioned one who boots people high. Not that he is weak or poor in the air, which I don't think he is.

Liverpool were fairly keen to sign him, but they had issues with their homegrown quota and couldn't bring in overseas players without moving some on first, so they decided not to make the deal permanent (especially with Gomez, VVD etc returning from injury).

Despite being a fan of stats etc myself, even those in the industry will tell you they aren't that useful when assessing centre backs.

Kabak has a high reputation due to good performances in Germany and impressing in several games for Liverpool. Not the finished product by far, but is young and could develop well. Alternately, he might have already plateaued and this is as good as he gets.

(BTW star ratings on FM are based against other players in your squad, not out of all the players in the game)

  5. Seems unlikely to me.

If Knutson wasn't interested in leaving Bodo/Glimt until the end of the season Norwegian season (which is Dec not Jan, so that is a pretty major inaccuracy from the ITK) then that would have ended Norwich' interest even before Farke was canned.

As King Canary so correctly points out, getting a shot at the PL would be a huge step up for Knutson, who was pretty much dead set on moving to Rosenberg after this season ended anyway. He isn't going to pass on an opportunity in the highest profile league in the world for the sake of a few more weeks in his current job.

Maybe his agent is trying to swing it as an issue to get a bit more wage, or Bodo are being tricky with allowing Norwich permission to speak to him, but can see it being a complete break down in talks.

It seems the manager search is being very closely guarded by Norwich and not even the local press boys have any news. While SB does get some news out first, it is generally on things that are not that secret and are also known to the press (although they may not publish it).

  6. Wales have are now introducing mandatory checks to large events with over 11,000 people from 11 October. This is the kind of policy change the Premier League is preparing for - while possible for fans to refuse (politely I would hope) to show vaccination status or negative test right now in England - it may not be that way for too much longer.

That's what I figured. I'm sure to begin with it's going to be a right pain as fans don't understand and times to get in will dramatically increase. Hopefully by just doing what sounds like spot checks at the moment they can start to feel their way into it and the club can get to grips with it now in advance of like you say, it becoming a compulsory thing.

I suspect they may have a 10 minute period where they ask everyone for it, and see how many people get into the stadium in that time compared to normal. If it dramatically slows things down, then I can see some clubs with large stadiums having to allocate arrival times to fans so they can make sure everyone is seated by kick off.

So if you're asked for proof of any jabs etc. in the announcement, and you refuse, what happens then?

By the looks of it, nothing. They say it is voluntary.

Bit of a nothing statement to be honest. Not sure what the point is. All very half-@rsed. It's neither one thing or the other, achieves nothing but an annoyance for the fans.

It is prep in case the Government make it compulsory for anyone attending large events to have these things (negative test, vaccination etc).

Premier League being sensible in trialing it out to see how much it slows down entrance and also getting fans used to the idea they may asked for and require these things in the future. Better fans learn how to get their Covid passport etc now rather than being told it will be compulsory 48 hours before a game later in the season.

  9. When you look at the actual position the players adopted versus Arsenal, while the 'base' formation is listed as 4-3-3, it looks more like a lopsided 4-2-3-1 in practice. Against Leicester, McLean tucked in deeper on the left-hand side while PLM pushed further forward on the right-hand side.

It makes sense for Norwich to do something different in the Prem than they do in the Championship as they have swung from being one of the best teams in the league to one of the worst. Carrying on as if nothing had changed would be strange.

Will be interesting to see what Farke pulls out of the bag for the Watford game. It will be the first game where Norwich will be expected to be on the front foot and Farke may revert back to the 4-2-3-1 base formation.

The pre-season was really unfortunate but maybe the fact we've had fixtures where we wouldn't be expecting points is actually a bit of a blessing so long as the management and coaches can keep morale high.

Overall I agree with what you say. I think we'll be far closer to survival than last time but if it'll be enough is hard to judge. We'll rightly be one of the favourites for relegation and will have to perform above our individual abilities quite regularly. Cautiously optimistic.

It definitely was better that than having Watford, Brentford, Newcastle in the first few weeks - but doesn't change the fact it was a disaster and put Norwich on the back foot straight away.

Would have been tough without many changes to the squad, but to have that while trying to integrate a bunch of new players made it particularly bad. Think the lack of cohesion across the midfield is a direct impact.

If Farke can get Rashica out of his funk that he had last season and get some confidence into him then Norwich will have a real weapon in attack. Have to remember that several of the new boys are coming in off personally difficult seasons so will need to find their form.

  11. I think it is more likely that Norwich go down than stay up. Not that it represents a massive failure if the club is relegated - whether the season is a success or not shouldn't simply come down to the difference between 17th and 18th.

This is one of the strongest ever Premier Leagues and while some of the established clubs hasn't been able to strengthen as much as they might have done if Covid wasn't a thing the sheer quality throughout the league is high.

Norwich have a lot of new players to bed in and had the worst pre-season in memory. There is no escaping the fact that it takes time for new players to perform at their top level and it can take even longer when they are coming in from other leagues.

Hopefully, Norwich can build up some momentum over the season and finish really strongly to avoid the drop - feel it needs at least one, possibly two other teams to completely implode - which is obviously beyond the club's control.

Thanks Bethnal, I understand Gilmour does like to play deeper in the midfield, just not with the level of responsibility he's had in these first 3 games. Perhaps similar to how we've seen Gary O'Neil / Leitner play in recent seasons? So I would've expected Normann to have played alongside him rather than further forwards.

I am sure Farke will try something different versus Arsenal, if that means PLM drops out for someone who he feels can better support the other 2 then I will welcome it. I just won't understand seeing the exact same trio!

McLean coming in improved things a lot from the previous games.

Gilmour broke through at Chelsea doing exactly what he is doing for Norwich now. Normann will primarily challenge McLean for that spot on the left of the midfield three. I can see the same midfield on Saturday as Leicester (if McLean is fit) while Normann beds in and gets his fitness up. I suspect that if McLean isn't fit Normann will get his first start.

Seems Arsenal are having a bit of a midfield crisis - no Xhaka, Elneny or Smith-Rowe. There is also a doubt over Lokongo who pulled out of the last Belgium game.

All true of course, but at the same time I can't understand why that means we should persist with playing Gilmour in a role he can't bear the load in?

Even if Normann comes in and struggles, at least he will be 1-game ahead in terms of finding his place, whereas Gilmour has only ever been a stopgap as the CDM / anchor point of the midfield - so where is the benefit in persisting with him there?

I think Jim is right in the sense that the central midfield has to change, it hasn't been working. Yes we don't know how well Normann, or whoever else comes in (i.e. Sorenson but I doubt it), will do, but I see no evidence for leaving things as they are!

I doubt Gilmour will be moved out of the CDM/anchor role even when Normann is fully up to speed.

Read Connor's piece today on Norwich's midfield - the role Gilmour is playing now is his preferred position and is where he played for Chelsea and where he has played for Scotland. Normann will play where McLean/PLM are playing, but will probably sit deeper. McLean already was sitting deeper than Rupp did in his matches. In my view, PLM has been the bigger issue as he isn't up to the pace of the Prem League yet and doesn't close down quick enough, or move the ball on quick enough.

  14. 1 minute ago, Jim Smith said:

I do think he’s over cautious in that regard though. A top international central midfielder is, in reality, capable of slotting into most teams and playing in central midfield. I really don’t want to see us at the Emirates with a midfield trio of Rupp, Gilmour and Lees Melou.

There is a lot to learn when coming to a new club, especially with the system Farke plays when it isn't just hitting percentage balls over the top. Will need to know and understand the myriad of pressing triggers, positions to take in and out of possession, rotations, set piece duties etc etc.

Normann will travel back to Norwich today and have training for a couple of days, whether Farke is confident he can learn what he needs to know in those few training sessions is what will determine if he can start. Farke has thrown players straight in when he is confident they get the system - Dimi played only shortly after arriving for example - but central midfield is so key he might want a little more time to work with the player.

There is also the issue that Normann is working his way back to fitness, he hasn't completed a full 90 once this season so far for Rostov of Norway. So that will need to be assessed as well.

  15. Think it is more about Farke being confident he's had enough time to work with players on the training ground so they know the system and how he wants the team to play. Norwich's midfield has looked like a bunch of strangers at times this season, so chucking in Normann might not be the best move (although depends what the situation is with McLean injury).

Kabak is going to be a way off fitness wise, he was frozen out at Schalke and played no pre-season to my knowledge.

Tzolis is just coming back off injury and in unlikely to be ready to start. I expect a similar line up to Leicester in all honesty. Unless McLean is out and then Farke may go for Normann.

Sargent had a pretty torrid international break by all accounts so suspect he'll also be on the bench.

It surely needs to be a combination of the two? I would also be nervous about us signing players we’ve not watched.

Will always be a combination, but some teams are more prepared to use video scouting and data as their primary sources of information - especially due to the pandemic and inability to travel.

As I said though, would only really be done where the player cost is low, clubs wouldn't buy a crucial player without having watched them first.

  17. 21 minutes ago, Jim Smith said:

Interesting our head of recruitment is now an analyst by trade.

Yes - wonder if data will become even more important in recruitment now.

While Scott was happy to use it, Norwich certainly weren't like Brighton or Brentford who use it as their primary recruitment tool. Scott said he wouldn't sign a player that he hadn't physically gone and watched, other more data lead clubs, will take that risk if the outlay is relatively small.

Brighton signed Mitoma from Japan without being able to go and watch him play for over a year for example.

  18. Nice article on Norwich's window in the Telegraph - written by John Percy who is very reliable.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2021/09/09/no-longer-going-war-without-gun-inside-story-norwichs-11-new/

Nuggets include Dortmund making a bid for Aarons the day before the window closed (loan with an option).

Lee Dunn has taken over as Head of Recruitment.

Tzolis had been tracked for years by the academy recruitment team, and Rashica had been watched since he was at Vitesse.

    Well worth a read.

They played a friendly v Brentford as well didn’t they with a pretty strong team out. As you say, the break may have helped them more than us.

It was against the Brentford B team, but yes, they have been working hard in the international break to get the new signings and players returning from injury/Covid up to speed.

If Norwich can start well the Emirates will get toxic really quickly - so if Norwich can avoid their almost traditional early goal, then things could get pretty feisty on Saturday.

  20. 4 hours ago, Jim Smith said:

Yes although in the past our advantage at international breaks was having a decent chunk of the squad for him to work with. Now we are one of the worst effected sides due to how many internationals we have, especially from the smaller nations who play nearly every international game.

The break has also been very timely for Arsenal, who will see Ben White and Gabriel return in defence and Partey back in midfield. Those three have all remained at Arsenal during the international break and will have had two weeks training with each other to prepare.
