Thank you both for your legal opinion, however having worked extensively in the Crown Court environment I can assure you that there are a lot of politics involved and the CPS definitely do retry cases to save face, probably less so now in these times of fiscal austerity but it certainly happened in the not too distant past.

Actually the retrial aspect is quite interesting but it’s difficult to be certain without knowing the details of the cases they are going to retry, they may think they have a better chance of success without the ‘weaker’ cases distracting the jury, as I understand they are going to try them separately or it may be a bit of a face saving exercise by the CPS due to the heavy publicity the investigation/trial received.
