He was carp from the very first competitive game. The PL is just as much about physicality and athleticism as it is skill unless you're exceptionally talented which Gilmour is not and as a result he looked hopelessly out of his depth, like a talented under 18 playing mens football before he's ready. He will probably go on to be a quality Championship level player who will maybe be good enough for the PL in his late 20's like an Ollie Norwood but right now he's nowhere near good enough for that level let alone for a team like Chelsea.

I agree with this, somewhat ironically reminds me of Dowell - plenty of skill but just doesn't have the attributes to play at the highest level.

  2. As others have said, we should definitely offer him one but I don't think he will accept.

He is getting on a bit but his movement is still  so good and that makes him an absolute pain for defenders to deal with - he pulls them out of formation, creating spaces.

I could see him dropping into the 10 role IF we ever find a replacement for him as striker! Indeed I think that's what he actually first did and why he was signed rather than for the goal machine he became.

He’s looking good but if he’s staying he needs to sign a new deal, I still get the feeling we may see him depart before the end of the window if not.

If we are still looking to get rid I’m not sure why he would’ve seen him play so much pre season or even feature so heavily in club videos.

Guess it may be just putting him in the shop window but it’sa bit risky as you’re trying to establish your side and style like I think smith is.

Maybe he is getting that one last chance especially as smith was interested in signing him for villa.

i fully agree it would be good to see him sign a new contract. If we do give him yet another chance then he should repay us by signing

LOL. Half this forum had a ****ing coronary when we didn't sign "a League One player" in Scott Twine, but now we're looking at another side, THIS league one player is surely not good enough. And let's ignore that Harwood Bellis attracted rave reviews playing for Blackburn. Like any of you know anything about either of these players.

I hear Vincent Kompany knows a few things about being a centre back. I suspect I'd back his opinion over people like this any day.

Bryan Gunn knows a lot about being a goalkeeper but still signed Michael Theoklitos!!!!

  5. I know people bemoan players being good for teamwork or morale but people like Gibson and Hugil do play an important role amongst the team. Not suggesting they should be kept on just because of that, but you do need to have people in and around the team to create the spirit and togetherness.

I'm also  pleased to see Todd looking happy again.

Hogesar is right. It's lack of physicality that's the problem. It's not even about sheer size & strength, it's about that ability to not get knocked off the ball - & not lose it as soon as you've won it off the opposition - that sets PL players above the rest.

Maddison is a real anomaly in this day & age (no pace, tackling or heading ability) but his sheer footballing ability sets him apart - & the one thing he has in addition is that ability to hang on to the ball under extreme pressure.

I agree with this, as already mentioned, Buendia isnt the biggest of players but he is physically strong and has a determination in his playing style.

In relation to Maddison - he lacks physical presence but has the ability of being an annoying little sh** which winds players up and results in their frustrations and lots of niggly fouls on him that he exaggerates and wins free kicks for - NB I think this is a positive of his game and something that the likes of Cantwell, Rashica, Dowell, Rowe etc should do more of!

  7. Not sure about the whole retro thing but may grow on me.

    What are the shorts like?

More importantly what do we read into the video:

    Gunn over Krul perhaps significant

Dowell included but not our main social media guru Cantwell?

Captain material Byram over our actual captian

Or is it just a focus on younger players/those wiling to do it!???

  8. Having read the article I dont see why this has caused such a debate:

    • Top player says he would rather be playing in a top league
    • Agent says he would like to get his player the best possible contract for the most money (for his player and himself)
    • Club says they dont want to sell one of their best player unless someone pays them the money they want for them.

His agent is even quoted as saying it is unlikely a club will make an offer we would accept given his age.

So in reality I dont think the position has changed from how it was at the end of last season (or even at any point for any player).

In fact it is now the club which is taking the risk - do they accept a lower fee for Pukki now say £10m OR run the risk of him not helping us to secure promotion and losing him for free next year (when if we still hold hopes for promotion we will need to find a bargain basement/lucky replacement as we wont even have £10m to spend on a new striker).

  9. IF he was actually committed to it then he would be a class above most midfielders in the championship and would be an unbelievable signing.

I also think with an injury free year (will that be possible??) in the championship he would be one of the few players capable of stepping up to the premier league standard.

I'm just not convinced that he actually wants to play for us giving comments attributed to him last year and his second half of the season performance.

Has a great pass, but 2 Assists in past 2 seasons shows that he's not effective enough to be considered a luxury provider.

20+ games per assist just shows how inconsistent he is, shows some great moments of brilliance, gets into good positions, But we have to take his game as a whole, and as a complete package he's just not worth building a team around as the luxury player, in my opinion.

It's criminal that Tzolis hasn't been given a shot.. Has at least equal finesse and ability on the ball, can weight a pass nicely, better physically, and works for the team.  Why even cater for a luxury player unless they're way and beyond what else you have?

Very good point...although not really sure that Dowell has actually been given the opportunity to prove what he can do in that position. Always been in and out of the team and more often than not played out wide which really doesnt suit him. I'd also love Tzolis to come good and be the man for the role - be nice if they (and maybe even Cantwell) were in a battle for that position so it brings out the best in one of them.

Another potential issue with Dowell is if Smith is planning on bringing in pressing football as his main philosophy because Dowell doesn't seem to respond well to those triggers and Pukki ends up chasing with no support. If Smith is going with a more possession focused approach next year he'll be fine but if not we'll either have to play Sargent or try it with one member of the forward line being unreliable and pretty weak at implementing it. I suppose he can be better coached at closing down etc but the real issue is if an opposition playing ends up facing him 1v1 they'll know he can't really tackle and will be easy to run past so we'll end up leaving gaps for players to run into

In the championship I think we can handle 9 of the players pressing (esp given Pukki presses a lot more than any kind of traditional striker) and then Dowell can have more of a 'floating' role within the main aim to be being a provider and creating some magic. It's pretty much what Hoolahan did for most of his time with us.

Our overall quality in the championship should allow us the bonus of having a 'luxury' player... totally different story if we are promoted.

  12. I don't understand the fatigue point - haven't the players for Hungary, Italy and Germany also played full seasons (or is it  just the argument the premier league is 'tougher' than any other league?... it's not as hard as the championship!)

Southgate is such a negative and drab manager and is not getting the best out of a potentially great squad. Given the favourable draw in euros and the early lead taken in the final we should have won it - possible best chance England will have to win a trophy in my life and I'm convinced that with a more positive and tactically astute manager we would've done.

I'd sack him now so new manager has 2 game warm up for world cup.

No chance FA will do that though as they have a nice yes man which is perfect for them.

  13. There really are some embarrassing comments and opinions already on this thread. Having coached my young daughters team up to the age of 15 I've seen the great impact football can have on their lives (as can many sports). So I'm really pleased to see my team making the effort to support the womens game.

Sadly the comments on this and the 'this language is not OK' thread show that some people (thankfully a minority) are ignorant and have no real understanding of the importance of some of these issues,

Many a night in dukes and also the pink toothbrush in Rayleigh

Wow,  it’s like the Essex reunion!

had some wonderful nights in pink toothbrush on indie night. Remember hearing suede# “drowners” there for first time after it had just been released  and thinking it was greatest song I’d ever heard (dj must’ve agreed as played it twice in the night!)
