Wouldn’t say no to that, but would we be able to afford Williams’ wages though - apparently he’s supposed to be on £65k at Old Trafford

    What’s his contract position though?

If it’s in final year, he might be willing to accept less for a longer deal and where he will have first team football and the chance to the move back to a top premier league team. I thought it appeared he didn’t have a future at Man U so he may need to think a bit longer term

  2. Overall seems poor to have to go to penalties against birmingham having been 2 up. BUT the highlights at least show some decent play and much better opportunities being created. Bit of luck we couldve had 4 or more goals.

Key thing Smith needs to work on appears to be our mental fragility.

    • Thanks 1

  3. Controversial one from me.... Ben Godfrey!

Has everything which looks perfect for the modern centre back - athletic, quick, good touch and can pick a pass BUT I honestly dont think he is that good a defender! Mainly because his reading of the game is so awful.

Often commended by fans for the way he chased back to make tackles or made last minute blocks BUT that was usually because he had either made a mistake, given the ball away or was out of position in the first place!

(I also think Jamal Lewis was just a decent championship full back at best!)

  4. It's interesting what this does for Hernandez, I think he should be one of the players heading out the door...great chap but not really up to the standard we should be aspiring to.

But the fact that he can probably help the new South American players settle in and is clearly a passionate and fun guy does mean he brings something else to the squad. Given Rowe is out for a while I think his value of  being around the team, even when not playing, may mean he should stay.

For all those who think that the Cardiff loss on Saturday does not matter, “it’s only one game in a long season,”, “funny things happen in first games”, “the team has yet to gel”  etc, etc; The thing to take away from that game is that Cardiff wanted to win, they were determined to win, they were prepared to do anything to achieve the win. Norwich were not prepared to be physically competitive and that has sent a message to the rest of the Championship. If I was the Wigan coach I would want my side to kick Norwich off the park in the first ten minutes, rough them up and be dominant, Norwich have proven that they cannot take it. Cantwell will mince around making sure his Alice band doesn’t get pushed out of place and the rest will back off not wanting to get a “hurty toe”.

Sadly I don't really disagree with most of this.

Although, I would say Cantwell was our best player last week and was one of the few who did look like they were prepared to make an effort (and even 'put a foot in' where necessary...even though he is not blessed with naturally being the most physical a player)

  6. I don’t know if it’s just because it has been a really depressing 12 months as a Norwich fan but at last I’m actually excited about something the club is doing. These two signings should at least bring something different to the squad in terms of style, culture and attitude. It feels a bit like when we took a punt on some unknown European players.

One thing that the squad certainly needs is freshening up and these two combined with Hayden should do that.

Of course the pessimist side of me thinks there is no real evidence that they will be any good as the championship is so different to where they’ve played before. If other clubs bidding for the championship title had bought them I wouldn’t be particularly bothered or worried.

BUT, for now at least, it is good that we have actually done something a bit different and I’m hoping they can bring the flair and excitement back to the team (something I miss as much as the winning).

  7. I do wonder when we will reach the point that people run out of excuses for Smith:

    • Farke's team
    • Moving away from Farke ball
    • Webbers players not his
    • Needs time to bring in his own style
    • Needs transfer window
    • New players needed
    • Team needs time to gel

It doesn't end Saturday but 10 games in if we aren't seeing what a 'Smith team' is and we're not winning games then I do think we will need to wield the axe sooner rather than later

  8. That's a bit of a depressing line up.

Not having a go at the players selected (except may be McLean!)

But given we have spent another year in the premier league, have spent £50m+ on players, have the parachute payments - how have we ended up looking at fielding a team with players like Sorenson, Gunn, Giannoulis, Hernandez, Cantwell and Sinanai -   ALL players who were not really considered good enough either last year or even in our previous championship campaign to be in the starting 11??

A sad indictment of how far we have regressed and the poor quality signings made

Webber appears obsessed with unearthing the next player bought for relative peanuts and selling to one of the big EPL clubs for tens of millions. I honestly think he's hugely motivated by it, more so than putting an effective first team together. I'm not saying he neglects that btw, just wants to be known in the game as someone he finds hidden gems.

This is an interesting point - I do wonder if

    a) this is because he knows that is the only way we will become a stable premier league club with this ownership OR

    b) it is because his bonus is linked to transfer profit?

I would like to think a) but the more obvious his arrogance becomes (see the fact that he only needs to give 90% and the owners begged him to stay when we are just a stepping stone for Europe) I'm beginning to think it might be b)!!

I agree with you that they need to learn to cope with it better, but it's early in the season after a short pre-season. All I'm saying is being patient, treating Smith with a bit more respect, and letting them get on with it should be preferable to starting the coaching merry-go-round again after there seems to be a consensus that the last change was a mistake, even from a lot of people who were energetically agitating for the last change.

I'm sorry cant agree with this,  the team (players and management) have had the whole pre season (and let's be honest most of last season) to prepare for the rough and tumble of the championship. To not be up for it for the first game of the season and show neither the required fight or skills is not acceptable.

As far as showing Smith respect, i was always told you need to earn respect and he has done nothing here to do that.

we should have got someone who played the Farke way i thought that was the way the club said it would work with a DOF

we ripped up all Farke's work when we got smith ,

    100% agree with this.
Absolutely disgusting that we have thrown everything away that had been achieved over previous years. It’s not just even the style of play, its the ethos and togetherness.

club seems a total mess and we’ve lost our way again

This 100%. We can’t afford to buy proven players so we have to take punts or so to speak. I also wonder how much we got burned by RvW, Hooper, Naismith et al making us steer away from costly signings that still yield as much return as a punt?

I think this is right and to be fair to Webber (which no one seems to want to) I expect that’s what he tried last season. Presumably he took a calculated risk that ar lease 2 or 3 of Rashica, PLM, Tzolis, Sargent, Normann and Williams would’ve turned out to be premier league quality. As bad as last season was, 2 real quality players with the squad as it stood might have been able to avoid relegation.

Obviously it turned out that absolutely none of them were at premier league standard (at least not yet) so in hindsight looks like a disaster. Although it may have still been a better decision; than putting all our money on 2 known premier league players and they end up being a disaster a La Naismith and us being relegated with the addition of them being a chain around our neck. At least with Webbers gamble we could ditch William and Normann, got some money back on PLM and there is at least some potential in Rashica, Sargent and Tzolis.

Don’t get me wrong i was fuming at our pathetic performance last season, but with time to reflect  and calm down together with building hope for this season I can at least perhaps understand what Webber was trying to do.

  13. Love Onel as a character but have to be honest if we end up relying on him this year we will be in trouble. He just has zero end product, hardly shined last year in what in theory should be weaker squads than ours.

We really should’ve moved on in terms of squad quality for Hernandez.

Last season we bought lots of players and posters said we should have spent on quality, not quantity. This season we buy two players, one with proven PL heritage, the other an admired overseas player, and we are strongly rumoured to buy one, maybe two more. But posters complain that we should be buying more.

Which one is it? Quality or quantity? Because I would hope everyone realises that we can’t afford both.

I dont think anyone would be complaining about either of the new signings IF they were fit to play and could hit the ground running. The concenr is that Sara has been injured and has had no pre season or chance to join in the team. There seems to be a real risk that Hayden will be a crock.

Therefore we are starting with a midfield which is weaker than last season (and that was our biggest weakness anyhow!)
