The thread is a laugh, surely.

History says we are going up, comfortably as champions, probably by double digits.

There is no chance we do not get promoted. This is clear as we are currently 1/100 with most bookies. If you don't think that - then put a few quid on us not going up, you'll be swimming in it and get to tell folks like me "told you so". But in all likelihood you're doing your money in.

Exactly. Swans and Brentford have 9 games left each. They need to win 5 of those just to get level with us. 6 or 7 more points will surely be enough for us and it simply isn't happening that we will have some sort of nosedive and lose 5 or 6 of our last 8. We are simply too good for almost all of this division.

  2. The idea that a couple of injuries and we will suddenly be unable to average 1 point per game is absolutely ridiculous.

We have a 14 point lead to 3rd! And Swans and Brentford have really hit the wall. Added to that we took 28 points out of the last 30. Our best performance during that period was without Buendia.

Losing Gibbo isn't going to derail us.

  3. Ultimately I doubt you will see many changes at all for Preston. Players can hook up with the squad in the north-west straight from international duty on the Thursday and Skipp and Aarons are young lads and will recover quickly.

What you might see is one or two being withdrawn after an hour, especially if we get in front.

The club will be going all out to get to 85pts before the break so that there's not so much to worry about with this fixture.

stick a grand on us to be promoted, and you will win your tenner

scout around, and William Hill are currently offering you the same chance for only an outlay of £500

ps I wonder what one bookie 'knows' that the other doesn't ?

Bookmakers don't 'know' more. They do, however, have differing prices on certain events because of their current level of exposure.

That is to say, if they've already received a large amount of bets on one outcome, say Norwich being promoted, they will make further bets on that outcome somewhat less attractive, to limit their potential exposure.

  5. It isn't just the 10 point lead with only 10 games left. It's the fact we are in the best form of the entire league, winning 8 in a row, and that maybe 4 wins maximum, possibly 3 wins and a couple of draws will be enough. We can afford to lose 5 games in the last 10, and almost every team we have left would snap your hand off for a point against us.

We are just too good for almost all of this league, the most dominant season I can remember in my lifetime. We will probably come very close to the 100 point mark. And we need to - a hugely dominant triumph will create huge belief going back into the Premier League. And getting the job done will really help us to get the recruitment process underway before our rivals.

  6. When we go back up, one of the things we must pay great attention to is making the squad physically more competitive. We need a couple of strong, tall athletes who can also play but can help us on set pieces.

Pritchard definitely isn't that. Not to mention it isn't a good look for the club to bring back a player who was desperate to force his way out of the door. And he's not performed for the last 2-3 seasons.

  7. It's also about going on to have a successful career, win trophies, play in top European competitions, play for their countries. It isn't all about money, that's certainly why Max is still here now.

They may leave and start on the bench. They will have to train well, wait for their chance, and take it when it comes. But that isn't a reason not to leave.

The main reason to stay is to give it another go in the PL with us and believe that we can be successful. The other reason they may stay is that our asking price isn't met. I don't think we should wed ourselves too much to one or two players. The good thing now is that we are in a position to reinvest most transfer funds incoming. If Max goes and we can buy 3 or 4 quality players that strengthen the squad overall, then that is the way we should probably go.

No one wants them to leave, but if you trust that the club is now in a position to reinvest most incoming funds into wages and transfers, it isn't the end of the world.

"He's dealing with a lot of stuff at Ipswich"

Surely, stuff of his own making? Rubbish academy with no investment; he took over part of their training ground to secure personal loans; sold their better players year after year to reduce trading losses; consistently employed bad managers and sacked the one decent one he accidentally found. Now he's sold out for £17m having invested almost £100m, leaving the new owners with almost no assets, very few decent players and an annual ongoing loss of between £6 and 7m.

If that makes him a good owner that could be what's wrong with football in the EFL!

I suppose all it means is that the staff get paid on time and the club still exists. That is, after all, better than some clubs.

Who knows whether these new owners will safeguard ITFC's ongoing future. Paul Cook may get them out of League One this season, although the playoffs will still be a huge lottery with the likes of Sunderland/Pompey/Charlton/Doncaster likely to be involved, but even if they do go up they have about 20 players out of contract and an enormous task to produce a squad capable of surviving at Championship level. The overall standard of the Championship may not have been as high as usual this year but when you see the squads of sides like Derby, Forest etc struggling that tells you how far Ipswich will need to improve their squad.

I still had a certain amount of respect for PL for what he did to turn our fortunes around when we were certainly at our lowest ebb for many a year.

However when he came to Carrow rd with Ipswich at started the fight purely to get fans onside, any amount of respect went out the door.

Ive also got to mention that I'm gutted he's left the binners.

In his interview after the game he said 'I'm certainly not going to have (NCFC) staff enter our technical area.

If you look back at the replay though, it's only ITFC staff entering our technical area.

Spoiling for a fight they were.

Yes if we spend like Leeds.

We have to believe we will do better than both the clubs going up with us. That leaves one incumbent, such as Burnley or Brighton slipping up.

No point going up if you don't believe or try to stay there.

You have to believe that we can finish above Brentford/Swansea/Watford and then, as you say, one other. Who knows what sort of basket case Newcastle might be next season, if they stay up. Then as you say there's Brighton and Burnley.

It will be difficult, it always is. What I do firmly believe is that the current management structure is improving us year by year and that's all you can really ask for.

I definitely agree that of the 5 or 6 signings we will undoubtedly need in the summer, we need to recruit, especially in midfield, some players who have ability and athleticism. That's what is going to cost the big bucks. If Max and/or Emi goes I would expect the finance will be there to fund a few big signings. We need that Doucoure mould CDM and a bit more physicality in the back four wouldn't go amiss.

  11. I don't necessarily agree. We've changed quite dramatically how we use the two defensive midfielders and our goals for and against columns are dramatically different from two years. We have more clean sheets with 13 games remaining than we did in the whole season two years ago.

We are going to need to recruit well, 5 or 6 players including at centre-half, right back, defensive midfield, no.10 and striker. There will be an opportunity to do that with significant finance available should Max and/or Emi leave.

From then on it's still an uphill battle but we do have some very good players capable of stepping up. It is possible for us to make a much better fist of it.

Thanks, nutty, I hadn't seen that before, although I have seen similar statements coinfirming that the nephew plan is certainly not set in stone. I was intrigued by this:

When talking about her lowest point of the years that have followed, Smith appeared to be referring to the controversy which surrounded wealthy businessman Peter Cullum in 2008, who told a national newspaper he wanted to pump £20million into the club – which never materialised.

'I've never thought it wasn't worth it, never thought that,' Smith continued. 'But we did once, where we tried to get somebody to bring money into the football club because we were desperate, really desperate, and it didn't work out at all. And I think that was my lowest moment, it was just awful, but we've never ever had enough of it and wanted to walk away.'

It probably is Cullumgate, although I wonder if it might be the Turners. That would roughly fit the description as well.

Sounds more likely to be The Turners to me. For it to be 'really awful' suggests they got embroiled into a bad situation. With Cullum, nothing much really ever happened.

With The Turners there were clearly disagreements and NCFC ended up having to pay off their investment, which I'm sure was a big problem at that time.

Please elaborate and provide evidence of anything in my post that equates to being 'glass half empty'? In fact quite the opposite if you care to take another read. However, my main assertion is that if anyone thinks that we are going to remain in this superior position v Ipswich for ever and a day are likely to be proved wrong. They will bounce back as most things go in cycles. Not that many years ago Celtic fans were crowing at the downfall (on and off the field) of their bitter rivals. They're not now are they?

Some things run in cycles, some don't.

Ipswich may come back to rival us one day, since there is infinite time to do so then at some stage you may be proved correct, much like the 'predictions' of Nostradamus.

On the other hand, they may not. Clubs go out of business, they fade into non-league. The swing of the pendulum back in their favour is by no means guaranteed.

I know thats the ethos but you cannot be rigid with any policy. If you need help in a window, such as a January one and someone is available, then age and sell on value is secondary.

Well that's true but at the same time you have no idea who our targets are. If our top targets don't come in then we may look at a more experienced option. But that would very much be the fall back position. Our primary position will be to go for players like Giannoulis - 25 years old, Europa/Champions League experience, scope to improve but with some top level experience already.

I don't think age should be a reason not to buy a player. Obviously it would affect the length and type of contract but I do think a lot of good players are ignored because of their age.

The fact is that it doesn't fit with NCFC's ethos to sign over 30's players for good money. Their value is only going to decline.

NCFC's policy is to develop the best young players who are likely to improve and increase in value.

As for whether the board will 'spend the money needed', we will spend everything that we can - the club doesn't have a massive wedge of cash sitting in a bank account. You only have to look at the club's annual accounts to know that we spend what income we get. It's just that most of it goes on wages which a lot of people seem to ignore. With all 'sins of the past' now paid up, we can expect to have much more scope this summer for wages and transfer fees. Some £14m already committed on Gibson and Giannoulis is evidence of that.

  16. I wouldn't expect any changes except GIbson returning if fit.

Early kick off Sunday makes a big difference, players getting home early Sunday evening and then a full 3 days before a home game. Very different to say a Weds night game before a Saturday fixture when you may not be home until the wee hours Thursday and then only have a proper training programme Friday before the game.

  17. Was just looking at the highlights from that game and Muscat comes right over the top of the ball, not even booked but a straight red these days.

The NCFC team that day had Darren Eadie, Craig Bellamy, Iwan Roberts, Chris Llewellyn, Darren Kenton. A really good side for Division One at that time.
