1. Victor Segura and the Yellow Cards said "Mark Seagraves and Neale Fenn" Fenn left us after a short loan spell for spells at Swindon and Lincoln - but a neat little player and I don''t remember us losing when he was in the side. (Bit like Lappin last season!) But Hucks, Crouch and Parker in that order. (I''m sure we couldn''t afford to sign Crouch permanently - but had we been able, he might have ousted Hucks)
2. Mister Chops wrote:"Knowing that Roeder''s back on the dole would be compensation enough for me." Me too - but I think he''s going to accept a post as life coach to Lappin.
3. As I read it, for them to go "on a free" would be a good result. But the reality seems to be that they are still contracted - given the new manager is bringing his existing team, that suggests to dispense with the old team''s services could mean compensating them - after all, it''s not their fault that Lambert is gone or that Hughton doesn''t want them. McNally seems to have suggested that they will stay on at NCFC and Hughton will "absorb" them - perhaps until they leave on their own accord.
4. Ruddygore said: ".....Nothing stopping anyone talking about the rest of the team but what I find odd is a stadium full singing his name one moment and then a few lumpy bo llocks telling him to feck off a couple of weeks later..... Along with the rest of the team we''ve had the second best english goal scorer in our team and I for one wouldn''t want to just write him off because a few big time charlie''s on here haven''t got the patience to wait for the club and Holt to sort it out" Good post Ruddyg!
5. Roeder would be excellent. He could tell us all that Hoolahan knows his future lies elsewhere and let him train with the juniors. He''d get in some really good, (ie expensive) loan players - "lovely movers" all of them - as they commute back to their home clubs on a Saturday night. Best of all I can see Fotheringham being enticed back to fill the vacant captain''s role. Someone better tell the bootman that his services may no longer be required and as for the present immature scribblers helping out in the Radio Norfolk commentary box....
6. [quote user="nutty nigel" Fair enough Crabby. Why don''t you play a bit of hardball too. If Holt stays then don''t cheer his goals. Just as a matter of principal. I''m with you Nutty. Sounds to me that a contract extension might have secured him, even without a significant payrise. Just as we brought Wilbraham in, I can see other Prem clubs happy to give him and his family a bit of financial security before the games all up for him. Maybe Morison, Jackson and Vaughan will do the business for us next season - but I fear we may have cut our own noses here. As for the bile now being aimed at our beloved "horse" - I wonder how many posters wouldn''t do much the same thing with a young family and knowing their remaining career was not only finite but short.
7. The boy is class. He did OK v Celtic and bear in mind it was a) a makeshift City team and b) he hadn''t played with any of them as team mates for a season. Someone said he arrived by train not long before the game so didn''t even get a kick around session. We can easily afford the transfer fee I''m sure. Like Whitbread, it will be all about the wages his agent demands - but the signs look hopeful.
8. Great news if true - and great to see so much support for him on this thread. I recall when the possibility of a perm signing was mooted last season there was a lot of negative comment. The boy is class! I suspect he was wanted by Lambert last season but coming from LFC his wages would be high. Shades of Zak W perhaps. Now we''re in it for at least another season it looks a different risk altogether.
9.
I think we all have a soft spot for Wilbo - especially now that promotion and survival have been achieved!
Maybe - but I liked his approach from the start - always keen to get the ball. Useful player - I think we missed him when he came off v Man City for example. reminded me of Iwan when he held the ball - but not as lethal up front. His wages could not have been massive - so I''m sure it is simply a case that his departure will help to fund newcomers, probably younger. For his part, I''m sure he will see his time with us as a high spot in his career, despite his restricted opportunities. Good luck to him - he leaves with his head up.
10. Why I like Lappin: he always wants the ball; always gives 100% and, when used, creates chances from free kicks, his long crosses or through passes from deep. Not as tricky as say Surnam, but Lappin''s attitude is always spot on. If he was ever given an extended run it would interesting to see if he got better with match practice or faded.
11. Certainly earned his place yet again.
12. Mr Chops wrote: "Exactly! Peter Grant put him on a very healthy contract for a player of Lappin''s limitations and he couldn''t get that kind of money anywhere else, so decided to stay and suck it up rather than go on loan/leave to show what he can do. If about 10 appearances in 2 years is good enough for some then so be it, but I''d rather sing the praises of Adam Drury." I won''t argue you with your praise for Drury - he deserves the highest in my opinion. But you seem to have conveniently forgotten about Lappin agreeing to go out on loan to Motherwell - where he scored v Celtic. And are you certain any other club made an offer for him which was acceptable to the club?
13.
I think the guy is class. Wins the majority of arial duels, great tackler and gets in some fantastic positions. And he''s only 22 so is only going to get better. Bennett alongside am experienced CB next season will work very well next season imo.
Agree totally. The lad is class and his clearances have saved us more times than his faulty back passes have been a problem. Lambert and Culverhouse will make him a star for us - just hope Whitbread is around too next season.
14. I''m guessing - I don''t know - but I suspect Lappin''s problem was high wages at that time. Why? Well we signed him for a pittance about £60k or £80k (I think his contract was almost up at St Mirren) and that would have allowed a higher wage to be paid. That''s why players like to move on a "free" when their contract has expired - (Zak Whitbread, please don''t go!). If I''m right, those wages would have cramped Roeder''s budget a bit - the likes of Sibierski needed money, money. But that wasn''t Lappin''s fault. Norwich paid what they wanted to pay. I''ve always enjoyed watching him play - he clearly loves it and wants the ball. No doubt he had to be enticed to take the risk and move so far south. And just to recap: after Roeder''s first game in charge (at home to Ipswich) we drew 2-2 and appin cleared off the line in the final minutes. He was also MoM!. Then came the away thrashing at Plymouth and for some reason unknown to him, Roeder threw his rattle out of the pram and publicly decried his players and especially Lappin who soon became his scapegoat. Lappin would have said he was a left sided midfield player who was willing to do a turn at LB - but he''s never wanted to be considered a LB. Gunn rehabilitated him - but after a superb performance (away to Birmingham??) he didn''t stick with him. He did however grant him a new contract - perhaps on "adjusted" wages - so maybe we now have an inexpensive but useful squad player. Alternatively, he''s had a taste of Prem football which no doubt has enhanced his transfer value. Only 3 starts but we''ve not lost any of those matches! Salute Paul Lambert!
15.
In fairness Roeder knew what he was talking about, he was good tactically & could spot a decent player but his man-management ultimately let him down.
Yesterday a wee Scot played only his 3rd prem game for us – not a great player perhaps but one who enjoys his game, always tries and by all accounts had a great game v Arsenal. Roeder’s treatment of him does not need recounting – but given the shortage of money and players at the time; Roeder’s decision to leave him out of team consideration in that relegation year was nothing short of scandalous. Don’t suppose he’ll be picked again v Villa but I’d love it if he is. And Fotheringham has to be the worst player ever to have worn the captain’s shirt. Roeder able to pick a quality player? Hahahahahaha!!! (Pull in as many loan players as he did and the law of averages must mean you get a few right).
16. Fantastic performance, brilliant result. Was it really Lappin playing or merely a cardboard cut-out? Glenn Roeder were you watching....?
17. Have never been convinced by Ward and after yesterday I will worry every time he plays. As for the young Bennet - I''m with the minority on this thread who thinks he''s been doing all right and did OK yesterday. At Blackburn Bennet made one clearance which more than compensated for that Man City pass-back. To me, he looks as if he has some real class for the future - and importantly yesterday, he actually wanted the ball almost as much as Vaughan - and was prepared to do something with it. Ward on the other hand just wanted to get rid as quickly as possible.
18. But i think you can show that every time Lappin has started this season we haven''t lost. In fact, I think we''ve won both matches...;) More seriously, having taken Pilkington off v Man City, thought Jackson''s pace might have been more useful than Morison''s
19. Think it''s Peter Sylvester back row far left. Partnered David Cross until injury ended his career prematurely and still around Carrow Rd from time to time.
20. Thanks for the replies. I was in the South stand and remember the nervous laughter as poor old Payne concentrated on not running off-side - and failing miserably - but had forgotten the details.
21. andyc24_uk wrote: Cant see it being Drury - We need him at the moment with Tierney out for what is starting to feel like forever! Wouldnt be surprised to see Lappin go there - Good squad player, versatile, but not getting much in the way of opportunities here - I can see him having a decent impact were he to go to Peterborough for the rest of the season. Lappin would do well there but would be sad to see him go. Seem to recall the genius Roeder making him play central defence for the youth team v Arsenal - he did really well in that position.
22. PKC wrote: Peter Jones was a really good commentator; his voice had a warmth and a gravitas that current radio commentators such as Alan Green could only dream about. If you want to read a really good account of the 1959 cup run I can highly recommend his Giant Killers book. Agreed PKC -and thanks to Purple Canary for the Youtube link. He dies quite young and suddenly. That voice - not a hint of the "I know everything" arrogance of Alan Green. I can hear Peter Jones saying: "And Kenny Foggo says thank you very much and slots home goal number two for Norwich.. (v Blackpool I think). As a mere 62 year old I recall being asked by the tannoy after the midweek slaughtering of Burnley (promotion favourites that year) for a special announcement which told us we had signed the long awaited new striker from Rochdale - "for a club record fee" (£40,000 I think!) - one David Cross. But what I want to ask those wrinklies following this thread - do you recall the match when full back Clive "Ted" Payne was played at centre forward by the soon to depart Ron Saunders. Who were we playing - and what was the spat with the chairman which led to Ted looking like a fish out of water? (This is not a quiz - I just want to know the answers!)
23.
The figures I''ve seen put about most are £40m guaranteed for the season, even if we finished bottom, and then an extra £750-800k for each position above that. So, if we were to finish 8th we would earn an extra £9.6m. Certainly worth thinking about.
Good point. We could yet overhaul Newcastle or tumble down a few places. I''m sure Lambert is aware of the need to finish as high as possible to boost any transfer kitty.
24. Minor error I think Making Plans - the season was 72-73 not 71-72? I was in Norwich 71-72 and am sure the fog match was when I was away at College.
25. I was away at college when Paddon scored his hatrick over Arsenal. My Newcastle-supporting friends were so impressed they insisted on taking me down to the bar straight after the match to buy me a celebratory pint! My brother was in London and at the match - he''d got a ticket but amongst the Arsenal fans - every goal that went in his arms went up automatically and then quickly back down again as he contained his excitement. Paddon was a very stylish player who scored lots of good goals but a hatrick v Arsenal away was something else! The 2nd leg v Chelsea I was back in Norfolk - I think with flu'' and listened to the BBC commentary in bed - I think it was by the late Peter Jones. Ten minutes from the end It went something like: "And this is unbelievable, the fog is just rolling in from the river end - we soon won''t be able to see the goal or the corner flags - and now we can''t see either the goal or the corner flags - and I''m sure the referee cannot either." Think I''m right in saying the river end was still open then? I did make it to Wembley though not a memorable match.
