Is no-one remotely concerned that Shackell is now considered the "big man" on the pitch? A player who is constantly caught out of position and totally lacking presence?  I''ve no problem with him being a regular at this level despite his weaknesses.....but it only shows how out of touch Grant is when it comes to making important decisions.

Maybe some of you have forgotten the stinkers he turned in last season........
As I mentioned further up the page, I think it''s fairly uninspiring. I don''t really see Shackell as being any more than ordinary at this level but because he''s young and come through the ranks he gets bonus points, I think.

I thought he looked a decent player in the few games he played for us last season, I couldn''t understand why nobody wanted to give him chance.

Played well last night and, unlike Dave who looked a bit...scared. Have to give Dave a bit of time to adapt though.

    We need another striker...
Need another striker? Let''s say dave does need time, we still have Cureton, Brown, Hux, Dion, Martin and if the worst were to happen and four strikers were to be injured we have renton (admittedly too young.) I think we should strengthen elsewhere personally
We''ve got Brown and Cureton. Hucks is best for us wide left. It''s too early to rely on Martin and it''s too late to rely on Dion. And as for Dave, we''ve got no idea yet what he''s going to turn out like so can''t rely on him.

I''d want another centreback first but I really think another good striker is needed.

    To Ricky Knight.....

David Beckham is quite possibly the best passer of a football in the history of the game, his right foot is absolutely sublime.  To say he is over rated is absolute nonsense.  Yes, Best, Moore, Maradona, Pele, Matthews etc.. were all wonderful players, every generation produces some.  David Beckham is one of the best of this generation.  If you disagree with any of this then it is clear that you no very little about football.  Very little indeed.
You did not see Johnny haynes play then, even Hoddle could pass on a sixpence, i have said Beckham is overated not that i begrudge him anything, He has worked hard on what he has and done well much the same way Kevin Keegan did. As for not knowing my football, i will go one on one in a quiz with you anyday. Just because i dont believe Beckham is world class and you do, its about opinions, someone on here has questioned Best for example.

"As for not knowing my football, i will go one on one in a quiz with you anyday. "

Just wondering...what exactly would a quiz prove?

That you can remember facts and numbers?

Knowing football is about reading the game. Not about who won the FA Cup in 1978 or how many clubs Gary Lineker played for.

Most overated player ever imo, but good luck to him, often wonder how far he had got if he was uggs, not married to posh and was judged on ability only.
He''s an outstanding world class footballer, he''s been to the very top of the game because he has immense ability.

    Calling him overrated is frankly...ridiculous.
In your opinion maybe, i grew up with real world class players like George Best, Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Moore, Denis Law, Becks could not lace their boots.
If you don''t realise how good Beckham is then I''m surprised you appreciate the quality of the players you''ve mentioned.

Absolutely brilliant player, if you don''t think so then I think football is probably a bit wasted on you.

  7. I thought Chris Martin did well when he first game into the team and scored a few goals, he wasn''t afraid to have a go. But towards the end of the season I thought he became a bit lazy, regardless of whether he was being played out of position or not.

Was good to see that Spillane wasn''t afraid to get stuck in but I think he''s still got a bit of a way to go when it comes to actually using the ball.

Robert Eagle has got a decent enough left peg to swing a cross in but unfortunately he doesn''t offer much else. Too lightweight and no pace. Can''t see him making at this level.

I''d like to see a bit more of Renton because he''s a big sorta stocky lad and I wonder if he can give defenders a tough time.

At the moment I think that Martin needs to be kept on the fringes of the first choice team to build up his hunger and also because he''s not good enough yet to be relied upon.

As for the others I would think loans and the odd cup game are best for them, none of them are ready to be in the first team picture (regularly) yet and some never will be.

  8.
For once wiz I agree.  £3 million is way over the top for Eastwood, but Sharp maybe worth the money.  Either way I would rather see us take a chance on Sharp.  A basic fee for either player should not go above £2 milllion and any add ons should be carefully arranged such as promotion or international caps.  Anyway its nice to see  us linked with the right players.
Yet Eastwood has proven he can score at this level and Sharp hasn''t...

Shame if he does go. Had loads of potential, just makes me wonder what would he have turned out like if Worthy had used him better.
Worthy knew exactly what he was doing with Jarvis. He knew he wasn''t good enough so that''s why he didn''t play him.

He never had ''loads of potential''. He was probably decent for his age group in his youger years but he''s way off what it takes to make it at this level.

  10.
Brown good at holding up the ball? Wow, yo umust have been at different matches to me and I went to all the home games and several away. He was pretty awful in the air and knocked off the ball very easily. I''m amazed that someone thought his hold up play was good.
Chris Browns link up play was quite decent to be fair to him. I''d be very interested in seeing if he could form a partnership with Earnie.

  11.
I know this may be a bit irrelevant and unimportant, but assuming there is a shake around the in the squad numbers this year, who would you give which numbers? For example, i usually think of number 8 as a centre mid that is pretty key to the team so perhaps give that to Etuhu, then Martin number 9 or 10 depending on if Earnie goes.
Hmm not too fussed about squad numbers to be honest - although it is nice to see the first choice players have the more traditional numbers. As for Chris Martin haing 9 or 10... I wouldn''t be so keen on that at the moment. It''d be better to keep him with less prestigious number so that he really works to earn a shirt number like that.

He''s probably throwing his toys out of the pram given that David Beckham was recalled instead. Just another demonstration that he''s not reached a full state of maturity yet.
Very much doubt the Beckham recall has anything to do with it.
I did say "probably" GJP on the basis that there does not appear, on the surface, to be a more logical explanation. If Bentley was genuinely concerned about fatigue or wanting to move away from the Under 21 scene, then presumably he would not have participated recently with the all-out effort he did and then withdrawing, leaving Pearce with one less squad member, as well as depriving another young man of participation. The position he took was disingenuous, which is why he drew the criticism from Pearce.
I''m quite aware of what you said, I was simply offering my opinion.

  13. I can see why Hucks would be good for England. I think the unfortunate thing for him is that he never got to play for a big side who knew how to get the best out of him. I think if he''d have settled down earlier on like he has done at Norwich then he''d definitely played at a higher standard for a while.

His pace will worry defenders at any level, we saw that in the Premiership. Lots of teams doubled up on him because he got them worried. And I''d much rather defend against Stewart Downing than Darren Huckerby.

Think on the basis of what I saw tonight though they should be looking to get Ashley Young into the senior setup, very impressive.

  14. Chris Brown is quite a decent player in my opinion. It''s fairly obvious when you watch him play that he''s quite natural. He''s not Ronaldinho by any means but he''s still a good player.

Good touch, uses the ball well and puts in a bit of hard work.

But I''d like to see him in a settled side with a system that works.

He deserves more of a chance than he''s got. But then again he hasn''t come through our youth setup...no doubt if he had people would be championing his cause for years and years even if he did only stay on the fringes of things and never produce.

  15.
I wouldn''t go over 500k going up to a potential 700k, I wouldn''t go any higher then that. And if they still reject it we should look else where.
Agreed. He''s now slipped down to 3rd or 4th choice at Celtic. He''s very inexperienced and hasn''t really proven himself at any level.

Also there never really seems to be anyone but us interested in him which is a bit strange considering many City fans suggest he would be a ''great'' signing.

  16.
McLaren said from day one that he would pick his players for footballing reasons.

Beckham, by all our admissions was poor during the world cup. Not just poor like a number of our players but almost anonymous.

He desrved to get dropped and has earnt himself a recall through his performances with Madrid.

He is a one trick pony who has no heading ability, no tackling ability and no pace. If you are to be an international regular, you need more to your game than a good corner and cross. I can''t think of another wide player internationally that offers so little across the board. What he offers is exeptional in it''s own aspect but for me that isn''t enough if we are to move forward.
That is so far from the truth... it''s ridiculous.

David Beckham is a brilliant all round footballer. There is no doubt that his right foot is outstanding, his crossing and deliveries are pretty much unrivalled for quality. Everyone knows that though.

But... his left foot is also very useful and he can deliver excellent quality with that too. Of course he''d prefer to use his right foot but he can put a ball where it needs to go with his left peg.

His short passing is excellent, crisp and accurate. He finds space well and takes up good positions. He creates goals and scores goals.

Other than that...his work rate is usually pretty high, he gets stuck in - he''s not scared of a tackle. He''s also relatively decent in the air - you don''t get to see much of it because he''s usually the one whipping the ball in but he''s not frightened to head the ball.

His career speaks for itself - Man Utd, Real Madrid and England (captain). He has Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League medals. He''s on his way to a Spanish league title. He''s been to 3 World Cups and scored at each of them.

David Beckham is a fantastic footballer, many quality attributes to his game. One of the best players of his generation and comfortably has the quality of a ''world class'' player.
