Paul Lambert in my oppinion has the potential to be our best manager for a very long time. Not only has he excelled in getting a vast amount of quality out of what seemed a very averyage/poor bunch of players (after the Colchester game), but he is bringing through some excellent youth products who in my oppinion bleed yellow and green. If this man and team can stick together for a season or two, along with a couple of new signings, i believe the club can get back on track to where it belongs.

    We should than Shack for starting this thread because it brings back so many great memories. Two more quick memories to share. One is from the late 60''s and a home game against Millwall. They had a little forward by the name of Derek Possee. he used to play with Keith Weller and they came from Spurs as I remember. Possee was a short striker although he had a fair old leap on him. Any way, he went in a bit hard on ''our Kev'' and upset the great man. Now I think if they had been at all compatible in size Keelan would have given him the ''Northampton treatment'' but the difference in stature of the two men made that impossible. Keelan looked down at a stroppy little Derek Possee and slammed the ball down so hard on his head that he left him poleaxed on the deck. The referee came running over and gave a penalty and if I remember rightly booked Keelan. However violent conduct didn''t often earn a sending off in those days and Keelan remained to face the penalty. Mr Weller, famous in later years for wearing tights to play football, put the penalty wide for the biggest cheer of the afternoon.

    The other one was my first visit to Old Trafford and the only time I actually saw George Best play. It was back in the early 70''s and it was the game after the famous boardroom bust up where Ron Saunders resigned. The game was only memorable for the skills of Best and Keelan. Best tried everything and Keelan saved everything. I don''t remember much else about the game which finished 0-0, but seeing those two great players on the same pitch was something I will always remember. There is no higher accolade than that from me.

    I seem to remember playing Birmingham ( who we really hated in the 70''s) at Carrow Road, KK being penalised for bringing down Bob Hatton, saving the penalty and then punching Hatton for diving. But I don''t think he was sent off.

I just wished he would train a bit on kicking with his right peg (and Daley with his left foot) because at times that cost us in the box.Some finally points, Charlton are going to be there for promotion their centre backs are fearsome and upfront they are far too talented for this league. If they keep getting refs like this then they''re foul their way out of trouble in every game.The Ref was shocking again today. I understand it''s league 1 but I''m appaled that some of these guys are professionals. Hopefully the FA will be able to review (it''s a plain ridiculous system) the Bailey incident and give a fitting punishment, because whilst we let teams get away with malicious fouls and the cynical fouls that Charlton deemed to be part of football. I pay to watch football not rugby games.

    [/quote]I thought Russell looked a different class, tough in the tackle, in control and with time to make the right pass, rarely wasting a ball. He looked the mature leader in control with Smith as the tyro doing the leg work, unlike last year where he was leaden, late in the tackle and angry most of the time.

    that sums it up pretty well. It is unusual to lose 3 players in 55 mins, no chance of any tactical subs. I thought the defence looked pretty good until mid way through the 2nd half.

    [/quote]Totally agree, can''t believe people are being so negative, we were shafted by fate, an awful referee and his knob cheese assistant. Poor Holt worked his nuts off and the ref constantly penalised him without cause. I think we''ll beat Charlton at home on Saturday.

    I don''t agree with your "chaos of Gunny''s team" remark. Which game are you referring to ? Our 4-0 hammering away from home of Yeovil, our successful pre-season games or the one-off freak result against Colchester ? Must be the latter, I guess ! That having been said, I completely agree that Hoolahan needs to be in the team playing in advance position IMO instead of Cureton. It seems that Hoolahan either :-

     

    a) does not fit in with Lamboot''s up and under "tactic"

    b) has fallen out big time with Lamboot

    or, more likely, Lamboot has been told by Chief Constable David McNally to offload Hoolahan and he will leave us on loan in the next few days.

    NCISA are not sponsoring any member of the club''s management, players or coaching team this season, I asked that questions before the season started. Don''t think they are running the Canary Challenge either this season which used to raise money for the Academy but Kathy will no doubt confirm this.

    Well I did hedge my facts in parenthesis, City Angel, because I had discussed with John Tilson about what forms of action NCISA would take if push came to shove and he informed me then that NCISA were sponsoring one of the coaching staff. But that was last season and you may well be right that this season they are no longer doing so.

    But my main thrust was whether NCISA could do both tasks and be effective at both tasks without conflict of interest.

    Now don''t get me wrong. I''m not saying that it wrong for NCISA to do either of things - they are both worthy and should be done. I am asking whether it cause conflict and confusion among the fans just exactly what NCISA is there for.

    Now I''ve heard it said they are there to put the fans'' interests in front of the club, bt obviously raising money and raising criticisms are both in the interests of the fans. So I think we have to push the envelop a little harder and perhaps NCISA would be better off to sharpen it''s focus a little.

    As Blah says, should NCISA be in the tent or shouting from the outside? What would be the more effective approach? Would they be better off as an elected replacement for the current supporters consultative group or would they be more effective if they were seen to be more independent. To be honest, I don''t know the answer![/quote]

    What do they do for either side of the tent? I''m not being rude, I just don''t know what value they add in any area in terms of debate, fund raising, leadership or whatever.

    I agree with Jim but I am not convinced they would make us successful. In the time they were at Birmingham they got them relegated a few times. Spent a season in the third division. Spent loads of dosh on concrete. Appointed plenty of crap managers. And had a spell in the Prem but never managed to get far above the trap door. This did not meet with their fans expectations.

    It''s not about where their money came from it''s about the football decisions on how it''s spent. Appointing rubbish managers is just that whoever appoints them. And wasting the player budget won''t bring success whoevers money it is.

    While there is no need to call anyone an idiot i have to say I have not been too impressed with Alnwick.  His handling on crosses isn''t great and his place kicks are just as random as Marshalls were.  In fact in the games i''ve been to over 50% of his place kicks have been aimed at either McDonald or Cureton when clearly Holt is the target man.  I also don''t think he is brave enough.  If he had come out with his hands to collect the ball on Monday night the clash would not have been as bad.

    He also made the same mistake in the first half which nearly led to a goal.  I personally would rather see us blooding one of our own youngsters.
