1. What really annoyed me the other night was Shearer and the other pundits saying "Lampard and Gerrard can play together, no problem". Based on what? We''ve persisted with this for four years and it has never worked! Lampard had one good qualifying campaign 3 years ago and has been Dickson-Etuhu-on-a-bad-day anonymous ever since. Gerrard plays one good game in seven or eight at international level and is a shadow of his club self. We''re doing the same now with Hargreaves. He was widely pilloried as being the weakest link i the England squad before the World Cup but one and a half good games later he was somehow a massive success story and destined to lead England to future glory. Now he''s back to form giving blink-and-you''ll-miss-him performances in the midfield. There''s simply not enough competition for places. An England manager needs to have the stones to drop Lampard (whose club performances have only been average at best this season, let alone his international abominations), and let Gerrard and Hargreaves know that they''re on borrowed time if they don''t improve quickly. They''re all scared that if they play someone else and lose, the papers will round on them, but the fact is that if we persist with this lack of competition we''ll never win anything anyway.
 2. I think Hughes acts as a benchmark. At the moment we are so short of players that we do actually need Hughes around. Once we add one or two more he''ll be superfluous. But the fact that we need a player of such low ability shows how far we still have to go in the squad rebuilding. For all those that question the quality that can be purchased for as little as we paid for Fotheringham and Lappin, both are clearly better footballers than Hughes. It won''t take a lot of cash before we can add enough bodies to make his surplus to requirements. Love his commitment, but for all the good wishes, the "Clap Clap Clap Clap HUGHES" chants etc, he''s actually being patronised and treated like a special needs case. When the claps start I''m always waiting for a cry of "TIMMMMYYY" a la South Park. The hideous errors are actually being overlooked now, and in the Derby game in particular he put us in trouble a number of times. We can''t afford to play him except when there''s no other option, because if we do, he''ll make mistakes that will cost us.
 3. I''d stick in at-home-mothers who drive 50 yards from their driveway to the local primary school to drop the kids off and pick them up. On a similar theme, people who drive whacking great freelanders, jeep cherokees etc when all they have them for is the school run or popping to Asda, and they usually struggle to control them on small city streets, park abysmally and generally make life difficult for the rest of us. That Tricia Penrose on Fame Academy can go in too. Desperate wannabe. And Norwich Union!
 4. Has to be Hucks. Dion has been immense and deserves second place and will probably take it with genuine gratitude and be chuffed. But whilst Dublin gives us leadership and confidence, Hucks gives us genius and magic. It''d be interesting to see who''d win if Earnie was fit and on 25-30 goals!
 5. I think you meant to say that he''s moving "hooose". "There''s nae dooot in maa mind aboot tha''."
 6.
chris martin, i mean. i think he has been fantastic and i know many will probably slate me for saying this but i think dublin should start on saturday as martin needs to be well managed, and he was clearly tired when he went off. it also looked like he was carrying an injury for part of the second half. i must admit i thought dublin would start instaed of him last night.
Totally agree, and said the same thing last night. It''ll do no good to play him if he''s tired because that will effect his performance and a poor performance will in turn effect his confidence. Better to rest him up and unleash him again in a week or so''s time.
 7. If we go with the same team as Saturday we''ll definitely concede, and we may struggle to score against a very good (and extremely big) defence. If Dion plays we have a chance, but whether that''s as a striker or defender who knows?!! I''ll guess he''ll go with same team and we''ll lose 3-1. Sorry! Just don''t get a particularly good feeling for tonight.
 8. I think it was 20-25%. They did well out of the deal. 15% of £10m for Ashton would still be 1.5m which isn''t bad.
 9.
Oh, and CO2... I know where you live, and I''m coming to trade your punk ass for some trees...[;)]
I''ve got wood.
 10.
Frankly the board would have to be stupid to sell earnie for such a small sum, im sure it wouldnt encourage financial prudence to sell your biggest asset at a loss. wages wise we''ll soon be rid of MJL, Thorne, McV, and hopefully gally (to be replaced with Marshall :-) . however good people think martin is he''s not going to be a 20 goal striker in his first season. Maybe jarvis will come back from orient with a new lease of life or even hendo (if played in his proper position). Mid & Def are the crucial areas we tend to go missing from in games so we shud make these priority, how much money there is is questionable it depends if the boiler will need fixing again. Hopefully west ham + Watford will go down and Ashton/Green/Francis will go for good prices    -ashton to newcastle £10m we get £1.5m (is it a 15% sell on fee we have?)    -   Francis (assume we have a 15-20% sell on fee so another few hundred thousand    - Green (are we not due money anyway from west ham + we must have a sell on fee)
I think Ashton is 15% and Green does have a sell-on clause but I don''t know for how much. Francis won''t raise a penny because we flogged him to Wigan and got our last cash from him when they sold to Watford.

 12. Hey, Granty still hasn''t ruled us out yet...
 13.
Its definitely me sitting in the rear of the car.
Ronald McDonald''s sitting on your lap mate. I''d have a word...
 14. It''s almost becoming a motivational tool. "Oh, it''s one of the others rambling about late promotion pushes instead of Doherty. We might stand a chance then!" I know Doherty doesn''t volunteer for these things and it''s not his fault as they always look to be positive and productive in these articles, but it always follows that after a Doherty rallying cry we play like the inmates of Bedlam on a day out!
 15.

I''m just disappointed because the title of the thread promised so much more...
Oh dear CO2....Maybe we can all talk about the player''s haircuts in another thread eh?  Real life is far more interesting than fiction I find.       [;)]
Don''t refer to me as CO2 or I''ll be outlawed as a pollutant and a danger to cows or somesuch.
 16. It''s May. Reading or Fulham or someone bid £3m for Earnie. What do the club do? On the one hand, your initial reaction is to call it a paltry sum which will possibly see us make a loss on him and tell them to get lost. On the other hand, can you afford to turn down a) an opportunity to remove the biggest wage-earner at the club just as we cease receiving parachute payments and b) a transfer kitty that could help greatly in Grant''s continued rebuilding program. If you take the money you''ve lost the best goalscorer outside the Premiership and a guaranteed 25 goals a season which is notoriously difficult to replace, plus you open up the old "this board has no ambition" debate. If you don''t take the money, your wage commitments are compromised making it more difficult for Grant to add to the squad (particularly if Dion and Hucks are also on good wages as is likely). You have a quality striker, but do you have a team capable of supporting him and winning games? However, if he returns and scores goals, his value could increase by Xmas/end of season.   My preference would be to keep him and hope that Grant can bring in a couple of cheap reinforcements at the back to shore things up. However, it''s a risk as the squad still needs some fairly major surgery and we''d be gambling on any signings paying off quickly. What does everybody else think?

 18.
i actually think he might be given a years deal! it all depends on who the club are forced to sell.. we need bodies in the squad. be they Darren Huckerby or be they Peter Thorne.. we need to have a full squad to choose from. and some cover for every position if poss. jas :)
I think this will be an interesting one. Grant, on many occasions has left him out of the first 16 even on the odd occasion that he''s fit, so obviously doesn''t rate him. The club pay him well in wages which is what attracted him here from Cardiff as opposed to other clubs like Stoke, Luton and Watford who all wanted him at the time and had similar bids accepted. Therefore I''d expect them to want to offload him and his relatively high wages as well. But he does seem to lead a charmed life for no apparant reason. In the spirit of Randomness I can see his lucky self sneaking another year, although it flies in the face of all logic!
 19.
agreed. more board spin im a fraid...  the other teams have done very very well since relegation and i agree that the 3 who came donwn last season could all bounce back up, with Soton and Palace having reasonable seasons by their standards. so why have we failed to compete with these sides? of those clubs Palace, Sunderland, WBA, Southampton and us have all changed managers... out of this list the other 4 have fared better due to axing their managers sooner than we did. Birmingham have the backing, Sunderland and southampton have the managers to do it, But all clubs have football minded boards who accept that success comes on the field not off it... Prudence with ambition is safer than spend spend spend. however.. Palace, southampton, sunderland, WBA, and Birmingham dont have Travel Agents, Hotels, Car Dealers, and "exclusive" resturants tacked onto the back of their grounds.. all their money is going into getting back into the premiership.. they are starting to reap the results...  Whats the answer to that then chairman Mumbles? enjoy coiffering the champagne on hotel open-day. when the other 5 teams are enjoying battling it out for the right to lose to chelsea, we will be waving to the siffs in suits in the hotel windows, as they proudly wave the keys to their protons they bought from the Jarrold stand dealers at us. we''ve got it so badly wrong havent we... ? jas :)
I agree that it sounds like spin Jas, and the facts don''t back up his assertions. But as to the alternative profit streams, why the problem? They make more than they cost, so effectively our board are working to make more money for the club which will eventually run into Peter Grants budget. I don''t quite understand the problem with it?
 20. In the last game alone, he''s right. Backtrack to Luton and there''s a lot wrong. In the summer we need a centre back and a goalkeeper minimum, and if he still doesn''t fancy Colin then he''ll need a right back too, because however much honest endeavour there is from Hughes he''s not good enough. The only ones settled with Grant and playing well are Drury and Shackell.
 21.
I miss Cluck''s ellipses...
Try saying that after a pint.
 22. A reference to Borat, who I''d earlier quoted when discussing the "Sexy-Time" owners of Birmingham, also someone who''d very much approve of fund-producing porn!
 23.

the Birmingham managing director, Karen Brady, says Brum will spend, spend, spend, if they get promoted. If we got promoted the strategy would be to be very prudent whilst having just a tad of ambition, don''t it Smithy? And ain''t that the truth. Ah, well. C''est la vie, City style (these days). OTBC
And if we had two wealthy sexy-time salesmen on the board we could afford to. As we don''t, we can''t.
Well, maybe so 02, but with your avatar we could make a start! What say you? OTBC
Jegshamesh! I like!!!!! Chenqui!!!
