No way!Sacked by Sheffield Utd and Huddersfield.Walked out (because he thought he had a better offer) on Wigan and Palace.Almost a worse managerial CV than Rioch had when he came here. (One imagines no one on the Board at the time of the interviews asked to see Rioch''s!) -
Worthy will succeed at a much bigger club than this. The real trouble was that he''d outgrown Norwich City. With all the bile swilling around MM comes up with a line of breathtalking hilarity. Do you mean Rochdale MM? -
One of the best most constructive posts I''ve read on here! With their lack of even the most basic knowledge of what it is like to actually play football, the Wynne-Smiths and the rest of the board don''t understand one vital fact. There is a huge difference between a team that is not getting results:- a) with the rub of the green perhaps going against them but showing organisation and cohesionb) a shambles where the whole is lesser than the sum of the partsWith a) you show patience. with b) you cut your losses as the chances of it being turned round are at best remote. -
Excellent post Rudolph. but I cannot see the buffoon walking voluntarily. There are times in the life of all managers - even the great ones like Brian Clough - where their inspirational formula doesn''t work anymore.Worthington must have realsed that the slender talents he originally brought to the party were exhausted a long time ago. The bottom line is he is way out of his depth and he must know it deep down. (Unless he''s even more stupid than we think!)If he had any genuine regard for the Club and its loyal following, he would have done the decent thing and resigned midway through last season at the latest. He knows this is his last crack at the (relative) big time with its financial rewards and that the Rochdales of this world beckon him from now on... -
Emphatically OUT!How a Blackpool reject and disciple of the Howard Wilkinson school got the job in the first place is beyond me.Every dog has it''s day and he lucked, due to the inspiration of a single player (Huckerby), one season. If the buffoon had realised earlier enough that the Premiership was beyond the capabilities of Holt and Fleming (he never did with the latter) we would probably still be there! -
Re that Charlton game, I was there too and Charlton only had 10 men when they were 2-4 down and still managed to level the game in the last seconds... -
Have we really had to endure over 900 of Herb''s flip, puerile (in the main) semi one-liners?Here''s to the day when we get some reasoned joined up thinking from him... -
In over 50yrs of supporting the Club, I''ve never ever wanted, with such passion, any other manager to leave! From day 1 the buffoon has shown himself to have no empathy whatsoever for what the Club has stood for. A corrosive Howard Wilkinson clone eating at our vitals... -
So we try to sign Horsfield and on the same age criteria grounds (so we are led to believe?) reject Sutton. If the buffoon had an ounce of PR savvy and genuinely cared one jot about the fans, he would at least have put out a reasoned argument rather one of his arrogant, bone headed riposts. Then at least we would all know that the Sutton issue had been debated in a mature and sensible way which it clearly merits. What he has done is give fans yet another stick to beat him with if Sutton bangs in a few goals elsewhere. Let''s just hope it gets us to the ''tipping point'' earlier... -
Er, yes CC agreed - Peters should be in the ultra elite category! -
So you have ''seen bits'' of Kevin Keelan. In other words you never actually saw him play.So totally meaningless for you to try and make a qualitative judgement.I have seen all City goalkeepers going back to Ken Oxford in the early 50s and Kevin Keelan was the best of the lot - no contest. (I would have put Sandy Kennon ahead of Woods also.)The other non-negotiable position is centre forward where Ronald Tudor Davies is numero one.I''ll happily debate all other positions but these two are non negotiable! -
The buffoon will not countenance the thought of Chris Sutton playing again for the club as he is too closely associated with an era when the side were renowned for high quality football. Football as far away from his brand of hoofball as it''s possible to get. The man will never understand the ethos of this Club and over five years has singlehandely demoilshed a fine heritage. How the Club can lose on a pay as you play deal with Chris Sutton is beyond me. I bet he hasn''t given it more than a few seconds thought - if that! -
I''ll think you''ll find Kevin Keelan came from Wrexham, so making a perilous journey even longer! K.K. represents the finest £6k investment the club has ever made... -
Gazza, one of the most sensible, erudite and passionate posters has not been heard of on this Board for some considerable time. I guess her failure - with others of course - to influence Club opinion with her reasoned, logical views regarding the seemingly unshakeable stewardship of our very own managerial buffoon, has sapped even her indominatable spirit. I do hope there is something still left in the tank and that we will once more hear her clarion call! -
Er no. Sacked by Sheffield Utd and Huddersfield and walked out of Wigan and Palace. With Birmingham''s relegation, hardly a record to envy. -
And of course all of the players you list were signed in the close season... Weren''t they? -
Whilst it is clearly advantageous to pay players when they are in a position to contribute on the pitch, it is conversely stupid to miss goods prospects for a month or twos salary package. This seems to be the misguided strategy adopted over the past few years when rivals have had first pick of the available talent. Sadly even with that advantage, I wouldn''t bet on our managerial buffoon - if he''s sadly still in charge - improving on the ''job lot'' he assembled during the last close season. -
Totally agree Wizard, how could anyone have faith in a fully paid up member of the Howard Wilkinson school of football artistry. From day one, there was no way Worthinton could get his head around the Norwich City footballing culture/heritage. As I''ve pointed out before, he got the job because he was cheap and on the spot. For a marker of earlier Delia inspired ''rigorous personnel selection processes'', you only had to look at the way in which Bruce Rioch was handed the job. Did anyone at the Club ask to see his CV which I think from memory, effectively encompassed 4 sackings out of his previous 5 managerial roles! (And let''s not even go near the Bryan Hamilton saga!) Defending too deep (still happens and from an ex defender) and the Cardiff penalty shoot out farce where only the opposition had a plan, confirmed my initial doubts. -
Did you mean ''regressed''? -
With the reported renewed interest in the pedestrian defender Linvoy Primus, our tactical genius of a manager has once again shown that he has yet to come to the realisation of exactly where the real deficieciences are in the team... -
It would appear that the manager and the board are prepared to stand up and be counted regarding the quality of the football played in one half against Hull.
If my calculations are correct, over 19 matches that equals 2.6% of the total time played!
-
Because Mike Walker encouraged his sides to compete a bit too vigorously and the yobbish tendancy disciplinary record was not appropriate for the ''county set'' strand on the board. This necessitated in some overdue correction from Sgt Major Rioch. Now Worthington, with his Irish charm and unfailing urbanity, knows how to ingratiate himself with the county set. You will note the above has little to do with football matters. -
Well done Plastic Scouser!
I too am irritated by Dickys flip, rose coloured view that everything in the Carrow Road garden is wonderful and it is somehow disloyal to constructively challenge matters.
I have been a Worthington sceptic from day one as there did not seem to be any mature selection process leading to his appointment and the feeling was that he was able to talk his way into the job because he was on the spot and inexpensive. (The Howard Wilkinson heritage didn''t reassure me either.)
The same could have been said about Mike Walker in his first spell - which shows that personnel selection can never be an exact science!
However, M.W. had a strategy to get the best out of the players at his disposal, learned quickly on the job and City were one of the most tactically astute sides in the embryonic Premiership; whereas the current incumbent, embarrassingly, is still wearing giant ''L plates'' in most areas of the job.
I would be more sanguine if I felt that the man had an overarching vision which was being temporarily hijacked by injuries, missed penalties and bad luck.
The truth is the team, even after all this time, are short term''ism personified, stuttering along with different formations tried despite evidence that they do not work, team members not given an opportunity to give of their best by being played in the wrong position...need I go on?
Like Plastic Scouser it gives me no pleasure to crititicise a club I have supported all my life - hell I actually went to Barry Staton''s testimonial in the 60s and had to sleep on a bench in London''s Regent''s Park as I knew I wouldn''t be able to get back to my Surrey home - but I fear without grass roots pressure, the board will allow things to get into an advanced stage of decay before acting. -
That by dint of...
tactical nouse
determining a playing formation/style to best suit players
logical team selections
good team preparation
inspired transfer dealings
motivational qualities
adaptability - ability to think on feet at key moments
vision - prepared to consider the unorthodox
...the team as an entity plays demonstrably better than the sum of its component parts.
(Typical exemplar B. Clough at Nottm Forest)
I''ll leave it for others to assess whether N.W. matches some/any of this criteria.
