  1. I tend to agree with most of the above. Not sure about Johansson, he''s not exactly been on form the past couple of seasons. I''d rather go for one of the better 1st div players such as Harewood for around the same money, although I understand that some of the better 1st division strikers will have price tags on them that are out of our reach (e.g. Fuller). I can''t help but feel that although some experienced players is a good thing, and players such as Helveg and Primus would be excellent by all accounts, we should also be looking to buy a couple of good younger players, who have got a few years ahead of them and who will make us stronger if we do come back down. At the moment, if we do come back down we could find that we lose our best players (e.g. Green), loanee(s) go back, older players leave or are past it (Malky, Edworthy etc) which would leave us needing several new players to have a good go at the Championship. Ama
  2. I remember a few seasons back we played Leicester in a friendly, and West Ham another year. I think we drew 2-2 with Leicester and I remember being unimpressed at the time. They were relegated that season. Then West Ham beat us 4-2 but didn''t look too convincing, and sure enough they were relegated too that season. I guess the bottom line is, if a team is going to do well in the Prem, it should be able to look a class above when playing a 1st div side. It will be interesting to see how we fare against Coventry!!! I''m not expecting us to out-class them! Ama.
  3. They''re not all hard working gut busting ball winners - Mulryne isn''t, and Francis creates and scores quite a lot too, but I agree we need a proper right winger, not a striker playing out of position. A Rivers-type player who *can* be arsed would be good. Ama.
  4. Wiz, you''ve hit the nail on the head... "a good manager". For me, a good manager is one who can make the team greater than the sum of the players he has. Worthy is surely a good manager for managing a team of largely good but not exceptional players to be comfortably champions of the league. Arguably Dowie achieved even more at Palace. Conversely, Keegan seems at Man City to have taken some great players (on paper) and produce a fairly poor team from them, at least last season. Ama
  5. Put it this way, where did Real Madrid finish in La Liga last season? And if you can''t win a league with Beckham, Zidane, Raul, Ronaldo, Figo etc....?!!!! And here''s another interesting one today. Rebrov. £11m when Spurs bought him... now available on a free. Clearly wasn''t worth ten percent of what they paid for him. Or Postiga?
  6. Now that would be interesting. I doubt they would do it though, because they probably have some sort of gentleman''s agreement not to divulge anything, especially to the media. But I think we all know that 95% of what we read in the press re speculation and on the message boards is utter tosh. Ama
  7. Milan - ok, I don''t claim to know the real figures so I can''t really argue those. I''m not sure what you mean by ''restructure the debt'' though. If you do, tell me how I can ''restructure'' my mortgage so that I don''t actually have to pay it! Sooner or later we need to bring down a debt that has grown from £5m 2 or 3 years ago to £15m today. Pushing the boat out further just risks emulating the kind of ambition shown by Leeds and Bradford, whereas I''d rather be prudent like Charlton or West Brom. I guess we''ll never get consensus on here because people have inherently different philosophies on risk and reward. I''d sooner not gamble everything, but some people would. Ama
  8. SC, you said the board should ''loosen the purse strings'' which suggests either you think they are holding money back and stashing it for a rainy day or you''d like them to borrow more - i.e. take on more debt. I doubt either is true, and I''d suggest Worthy has as much money to play with as is left over after existing commitments. So its up to him really whether he spends it or sits on it, and do you really think he''s going to sit on it and watch us go down? No, so if its there he''ll spend it, either now and/or in January. If its not, its not. Ama
  9. Ditch the inferiority complex... what and compete on a level with the other Prem clubs? But we''re not on a level with them. They have all been there since last season and built up their funds and squads. Except West Brom, who are still benefitting from their prudence the previous year, and Palace, who as far as I know haven''t signed any ''big'' players yet either! Imagine we''d signed, say, Rommedahl, like Charlton did. £2m fee plus, I''m guessing, say, £25k per week wages. That''s £3.3m this year, or perhaps the entire headroom for the whole season in Worthy''s budget. On one player. Assuming he would have come to Norwich anyway when a more ''established'' club was interested. Come on, get real about this. Yes, there are areas that need improving, and yes there *seems* to be a lot of money from Sky, but it doesn''t go very far when you talk about those kind of players. And as for "put all our eggs in one basket", you''ll find more support for that in the Sheepshanks school of financial (mis)management. Ama
  10. Oh and plus... £6m from the land deal.... goes straight to the loan that was taken out to build the new South Stand. End of story. So ignore that money. Or look at it this way - we were £15m in debt by the end of last season, including the new South Stand. Take your £25 + £6 + £2.5 and pay that off and you''re left with £16.5m as a starting point....
  11. Firstly, where do you get the figure of £25m from? I don''t know all the figures, but here are some really random bistromaths to consider: Last season we made a loss of £4.6m, on the wages we were paying then. We''re building an infill for the next part of £3m We''re replacing the pitch for £650,000 We''ve paid out perhaps £1m for existing players because we got promoted (Drury, Svensson, Huckerby, maybe others) plus whatever bonuses for promotion, plus whoever''s contracts that we''ve paid up already (Easton, Rivers...) So there''s perhaps £10m gone already, before we even kick a ball. If we have 25 players on an average £10k per week each in the Prem, that would be £13m wage bill. We know some will be a lot higher than this (Hux on £20k+ now?). That would leave about £2m of your £25m this season, even without paying off any debts. So I''m not sure where you can get £5-7m from. Here are two sobering thoughts: 1. If some of our better players (Hux, Green''s new contract etc) have big rises because they got us promoted, much of the money you talk about is being spent just to keep the good players we''ve got, when in previous seasons they would have been sold to balance the books! 2. Had we not got promoted, we''d be ****ed. The club took a gamble and it paid off, but that now has to be paid back. So some of this year''s money will be paying for last year''s promotion, let alone building for the future. So its not so much what we do with the pot og gold at the end of the Premiership rainbow, but what the hell would we have done without it? Well, you don''t need to look very far around the Championship for clues. Ama
  12. Or maybe its just taking longer than they thought. It may still happen, and there''s plenty of time yet. Worthy has before shown patience and either got his man or got a better man. As for the outlay, if we''d paid £3.5m for Bentley and Gallacher, would you be happier? Surely its the quality that comes in rather than the transfer fee per se? I don''t care if we get 3 more players on frees if they''re top quality. Remember their wages are part of the sums too, so we haven''t spent 750k, we''ve probably spent closer to £3.5m! Ama
  13. Yes that''s right. If your gross salary is £25,000 per year and you spend £750 on a holiday, that means you still have £24,250 to blow on a new car, computer, hi-fi etc. At least, if you conveniently forget about boring things like tax, bills, mortgage blah blah blah. I guess it just depends on how ambitious you are. Ama
  14. What the hell is going on? With Scowcroft? Er, nothing. According to the interviews in the EDP. "the whole transfer thing is in complete turmoil". Are you talking about the non-existent Scowcroft thing or the summer transfers generally? And by complete turmoil, do you mean that you think Worthy doesn''t have things under control, or just that you''ve heard so much paper talk and conflicting speculation that you''ve lost the plot? Cos I think there''s a big difference - the papers and rumour-mongers can print or say what they like, it doesn''t alter the facts.... Ama
