I can see your points as to comparisons of expansionist empires and China is doing just that. The difference is the sheer scale. But the government is Marxist. They use capitalism to expand and exploit their own people to do so. We need to pay more and have less with more goods made in the UK and no sharing of knowledge. There was no Google or Facebook in China because China insists on shared information from companies it hosts. Companies like Apple and Tesla need reigning in. Like him it not, Trump might be the only leader willing to confront China.

China is on a par with **** Germany and Stalanist Russia. It just plays a game. I have only been to China once (Shanghai and Beijing) and saw right through the facade. I've also met plenty of Chinese tourists abroad and their behaviour was appalling. I love the British Chinese people, I loved Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and also love the Thai'S, Vietnamese and Filipinos. But the PRC is an existential threat. It might be capitalist communist but communist it is. There are always winners and losers in communism, that is its paradox.

My parents are well into their 80's. They are busy, busy, busy with voluntary work in the local community. Or, they were. They are trying to keep busy at home as they are doers but for elderly people like them stopping being busy, getting out and enjoying what they have left, being with family and friends might just be their demise, virus or no virus.

I will do my utmost from here on in to avoid purchasing anything manufactured in the PRC. The desire for cheap (possibly forced) labour within a few years has turned a Medeival communist state into the 2nd most powerful country in the world threatening neighbours, eating the remaining world's wildlife, killing the seas and polluting the atmosphere. Western Capitalism is equally culpable and all so we can buy much more than we need. Back in the 60's and 70's we all had so much less but we were no less happy. China will not be confronted by governments. China will simply sell large quantities of that countries currency and raise inflation or other fiscal retaliation. It requires all of us to buy home made whenever possible or made in a country not seeking domination. It isn't easy. As I said before if you buy clothing made in Italy it is probably made under Chinese conditions by Chinese acquired companies using illegal labour. We need to be better informed. Certainly Huawei shouldn't be allowed anywhere near our 5G network. Warfare is seldom fought on battlefields these days. The West brought about the fall of the Soviet Union by the promulgation of numerous costly defence commitments. War is fought in cyber space through social influence. Russia has form here. It is insidious from influencing political elections to newspaper comments sections. The truth is so hard to find Trump turned it on its head to declare 'fake news' when it suited him and people were prepared to accept it possibly was. Refugees are an easy weapon of war. Assist enough sub Saharan Africans to cross that historically impenetrable barrier or create conflict in Syria to force people into Turkey and Greece and you create political problems. The refugee issue, for example, has been damaging to the EU which Russia would like to dissemble. It might be the case that this virus originated from dirty peasant markets and spread globally because China has tourists, students, workers both legal and illegal everywhere. I personally suspect it is more sinister than that and we are dancing to the tune with this ludicrous shut down of our economies which will be the catalyst for the major shift of wealth from West to East. You might be someone who judges British imperialism by modern standards. But the fact is, that is why you live in 1st world comfort on a small island in North-West Europe. China wants the same things. Do we hand it to them? Do we accept subservience? Do we sell them our debt? Do we hand them our intellectual property? You may dislike America but would you prefer a communist country leading the world. Our politicians have lost their heads. We have to defend our country. We are wholly over-blowing this virus. 1500 people die every day. After this 'lockdown' cases will rise again. Personally, I'm fine. I have plenty to do, enough retirement income and can comply with isolation. I don't have to cope with restless children, a 20% salary cut or unemployment. I'm not trying to move house or pay rent or mortgage but I'd happily manage my own risk and accept contagion for the sake of my children and grandchildren who will, in future face higher taxes and costs. I am a compassionate and patriotic individual but I have to have priorities and for me they are: child welfare and development, young people and their education and training, young families and working people. These come first. This 'lock down' will end soon because the public will rebel and politics will have to follow. The government should have set it at 3 weeks maximum to prepare the NHS and no longer. We are being led by dubious and confusing science. It's time to get a grip!

In the end almost all of us will catch Coronavirus and some of us will die. The government is simply seeking to delay and lower the averages because although no health system in the world could cope with a flood of cases that is not the same thing as coping with a reasonable number. Also, the government needs time to procure equipment and beds. On an individual level we are doing the same thing but in the end we will catch it. We can only hope for mild symptoms. This is why, when resources reach a certain level society has to get back to normal. In 1914 if you were a working class lad you and your pals would have been expended in Flanders. In 1939 - 45 if you were a Grammar school boy you would have been confronted with a short life expectancy in Bomber Command. History is littered with mortality but since 1945 ordinary people, although living with the threat of nuclear war, have enjoyed the longest period in British history of unconscripted warfare. Before that, in particular as a working class person you would have faced a short life of discomfort, untreated pain, disease, high infant and mother mortality and a high risk of death in warfare. We have happily become used to comfort and longevity. We expect the state to care for our ills but now a plague has arrived. It predominantly kills not young people in their prime or children, it hits the other end of the scale, the people who are only around in such numbers because of modernity. That modernity is based upon an economic model being destroyed to combat the virus. Cherish again the things in life you took for granted, use this time well in other ways, promise to make the most of life hereafter, it is a gift.

The testing to deaths rate is irrelevant. Millions have had this virus because at the rate of infection and time it arrived here that has to be the case. A lot of people seem to think it began when Boris hardened the rules this week. Before that it was being spread liberally. We know how many die. We don't know how many died WITH Covid 19 or OF Covid 19. The media likes to highlight young cases and especially deaths but without a post mortem or information on the health of the person this is just them seeking effect. What we absolutely need to clarify is why some people are so adversely affected and others barely or not at all. Are there different strains or is it just down to the condition of the victim. With a typical case of common flu Boris and Hancock would be too unwell to carry on working, talk via video link or even get out of bed but they have such mild Covid 19 they just need to isolate. Famous people have the virus because it is so widespread it is the law of averages, but because of who they are they are tested. At some point in the near future we will need to accept the country has to go back to work and normal routines. We need a test for antibodies to identify how many have had it, we need to be in a position to treat large numbers of serious cases and we need to re-open the economy. There is an awful equation here: As a compassionate society we need to provide medical care. But, we also need to earn a living, avoid a massive debt for younger generations, treat people for other conditions, save the economy, prevent mental health and child development issues, stave off civil disorder, protect our way of life etc. At present we are trying to go against our habits and instincts. We cannot cuddle our Grandchildren, we cannot even be with loved ones as they die. The police are struggling to properly come to terms with implementing new powers. Drones for God's sake! And because so many people turned up at Snowdonia you now can't drive to the beach for a quiet walk. Policy makers have confused us. They are on a steep learning curve but have struggled with their messages. And still flights arrive from all over the world. In the meantime, China allows one flight in per week and quaranteens those arriving. The PRC is a despicable country, expanding its navy to project power and seeking dominance. It is a secretive communist state with poor human rights. China owns a lot of Western debt, especially American, and will probably own much more after all this. What we are seeing is a massive wealth transference from West to East and we will be their clients. It is vital major companies stop producing in China which involves sharing intellectual property with them. China wants things to be developed in China, not just made there but to do that it plagiarises because the system there prohibits the kind of free thinking needed to create the ideas. Ai Wei Wei is despised in his native China because he is free thinking, creative and above all, critical. The only way to bring China down a few pegs is to stop producing there and stop buying products made there. This will cause unemployment and spark unrest which is simmering anyway. This virus is working so well for China, exported via thousands of student and tourist visas, you'd have to admit, as a hostile act to damage competing economies it is far more effective than the usual cyber crime, maritime hostilities or Internet information harvesting. Western companies like Tesla need to pay a price for all this too. There has to be a response for the cost and suffering inflicted on us.

Wow! This thread has really brought out the dog eat dog mentality. It is clear to me a sudden frenzied rush caused supply problems. A herd mentality and human beings are voracious, avaricious creatures anyway. The issue is otherwise complex. People have different spend and time to buy opportunities. Others are shopping for others. Some people have large families. Yesterday my wife bought a sack of spuds which we couldn't eat so we have shared them with parents and elderly neighbours. A lot of people are doing that. I also have the advantage of being married to a competent and resourceful cook. How many people today really know how to be resourceful or cook from scratch? Ricardo calmly prepared, he flattened the demand curve in doing so, his experience led him and he tried to share it. His main intention was to be able to avoid the crowds now populating the supermarkets. We need to keep calm although the idiots presently using the emptier roads as race tracks for motor cycles and some cars is winding me up a tad.

The situation shows how much we have changed as a country, not because of immigration changing demographics but within the established community. Time was when Boris Johnson's very British measured nudgings would have been enough. 'This is the right thing to do' and 95% of the population accepted. You still see many examples of British altruism and sense of duty but we have developed a characteristic of selfishness and hostility to others. Respect for authority is gone. Yes, authority needs to be held to account, it is sometimes wrong but what is the alternative but chaos? Every day we are all subjected to micro-aggressions: on roads, public transport, bars. What is wrong with us? Do we want French style certificated movement? We are not as rule abiding as Germans, no one is, but do we want to bring authoritiam on our heads. We soon bleat and plead when brought to account, no one ever admits fault and that is a massive weakness. The British Gent is a myth. London isn't full of chaps in bowler hats carrying umbrellas. It is full of pushy young men and women fighting for space or lost in their social media amidst a mayhem of unrestrained idiots on cycles, bikes and cars. Even on this site, people air their opinions and are shot down aggressively with other opinions presented as if they were facts. If you post something uncontroversial with a plain headline no one reads it. Under a previous incarnation (which I lost the password for so it's history) I myself used alarmist titles just to get 'clicks.' I also found how a flippant suggestion became fact once it had been quoted once or twice. It was light-hearted but just as you can't discipline children with irony you cannot control reaction to your comments in a world where extreme language is the norm. We need to stop using hyperbole for everyday situations. The media is the driver of this with 'weather bombs' and 'vile' politicians etc etc. Perhaps this virus will help to readjust some of our priorities. When you cant do things, the simple everyday things, they mean much more. I wish I could hug and kiss my mum today and one of my grandchildren next week.

I am sorry to hear this OP. Supermarket staff don't get paid near enough to put up with all of this. They are also putting themselves and their families at risk of infection to ensure we can buy food. B&Q was very busy today with customers and the usual shoplifters (want to buy some cheap spotlights?) as people bought their DIY projects for the shutdown. Is it true stores are now short staffed as older staff have been stood down? I was impressed by the good nature of the young man on the till with a long continuous queue. What needs to happen is for stores to shut for a day if staff are being abused or to restrict entry. Be polite or lose the facility. Please tell your girlfriend many people really appreciate the shop staff who are very much 'key workers.'

I think it will lead to changes and there has been some great community spirit and altruism. But, starting in the cities, I see real problems ahead. There are many, many elderly who will not help themselves. One is the PM's father. But overall, this is disproportionately damaging to the young in every sense but medical and there will be a backlash. I hate intergenerational issues, but they have become the new form of bigotry. Coronavirus measures risk stoking them.

I remember the first time I watched the film: Jaws. The tension of an unseen killer was palpable. The tension built and built right up until you saw the shark. It was engrossing but never as tense and fear inducing again. Coronavirus is ostensibly unpleasant and fatal for some. We can't see it, we are encouraged to act as if we are dealing with a phantom and this employs people's imaginations. In such circumstances people naturally see what they fear most and seldom does reality match it in term of severity. There are occasions where the reality is worse: WW1 battlefields for example. But is Coronavirus in that category? Government decisions always lead to unforseen problems and a battle plan lasts as long as the first shot. Also, whatever the issue, people soon become wary. Remember all those WW2 child evacuees from City to Country: most went back in a short timescale. And what of the hope people will 'do the right thing?' The frenzy at supermarkets is an example of how badly that can work just as blitzed houses were burgled. At present we see the virus and the NHS pressure being the issue. I tell you, it will soon be shared with other problems. This virus will cause huge intergenerational tensions. If you are young you will suffer little if at all and unless suffering with an underlying problem have almost zero chance of dying. If you are elderly the reverse is true. So, who needs to go to work - the young. Who needs education and qualifications? The young. Who like to socialise in town centres at night, in clubs and bars. The young. Who need to find partners and build relationships. Mainly, the young. Who have to manage those home bound children and keep them entertained and engaged? Young parents. Who will be paying for the financial damage being caused? The young. Who has the most energy and drive? The young. I could go on and on..... Also, we will see an increase in domestic incidents including murders, mental health problems and anti-social behaviour. I know a lot of very outgoing older people but these folk also have the home with a garden and resources to keep stimulated at home. I predict the use of the Internet for gatherings with unmanaged alcohol consumption and drug misuse at domestic properties. I predict civil disobedience and unrest. I predict after 2 weeks of this there will be a clamour to reverse it. The elderly and vulnerable need protection. The question will soon be: at what cost, not just financially but in terms of young people's education, life chances, debt, lack of leisure (including weddings and other life events). We need to find a better way to protect the vulnerable and elderly whilst ending all these restrictions on the young who will soon learn to resent it, otherwise this virus will soon erode the fabric of society and we are not North Korea. This is the fast developing dilemma and defeating a virus threatens to be a phyhic victory.

I keep seeing reports that we are on the same trajectory as Italy. I can't believe this. Italy had a major cluster festering unknown for weeks. We have scattered cases, according to population recorded when the news was out. Italy has a different social structure and a famously aged population. The Italians started from a bigger threshold and state of awareness and demand was concentrated. Italy might be the fear but I can't see it as a guide as to how it will hit the UK. Italy is possibly my favourite country outside of the UK and I love Lombardy. It is sad to see their plight.

I agree. But Nick Hancock and others, especially certain media, gave a very poor briefing on this yesterday. Since then the government has improved its message. So far the messages from government have confused and confounded. Today the advice to over 70s was much more practical and liable to be followed. It was the same with advice from Dr. Hilary Jones today which was excellent. Of course you can go out for a walk, just avoid unnecessary contact or groups. Do not take Ibruprofen etc. We are a country which will respond to sensible requests.

You did that when you made casual dispersions as to my character. But getting back to football isn't Norwich's strip made in Italy? I hope the Club used due diligence to ensure it was made in a factory paying a living wage using non-exploited labour. You can read about the Italian/Chinese rag trade in BBC articles. It is another example of modern day slavery which is everywhere and, I suspect, rife in China. I was amazed how restricted people were in Tianamen Square, don't get officials in photos, don't discuss anything because ears are everywhere. Even our guide was accompanied by a party official. No internet just a national intranet. The cost of homes is astronomical meaning young people have little chance of marriage, no wonder they'd be easy to traffic. Pollution. Human rights abuses in Tibet and Xinjin County. China is an existential threat to the world on a number of levels. I have been told first hand of Bank of China staff in London being sent home with TB. I can't prove it but the disease is rife in China and all the hawking and spitting I saw there wouldn't help. This is all the fault of major companies using cheap labour which damaged industry in the West with all manner of social consequences. I bet you don't like Trump. Well, globalisation seeded the ground for him and others like him. I bet you don't get debates like this on WACCOE!?

Racism? How dare you! What a lazy thinker you are. If you want to stop being a useful idiot for aggressive expansionist and broaden your mind could I recommend a recent book on Geopolitics by Tim Marshall a respected and experienced foreign correspondent titled 'Prisoners of Geography.' It will help you understand what the Communist regime in China is attempting. South-East Asia and Indonesia must be racist in your world as they deal with threats from China without the subterfuge. Or do you think the virus came from pasta?

You need to forget governments and think people. Italy is a relatively new country of very disperate regions due to geography. It is the most Conservative in Europe but also prone to corruption and dictatorship. Spain is divided but only came out of dictatorship in the 1970's. France is very divided and always in a state of flux with a strong pariizan element capable of rallying behind anything. Germans are great but not when it comes to empathetic policy. Britain is moderate, middle of the road, inclined to deliberation or lack of preparedness. That's why we lose every battle except the last one.

Marr also had the Italian Ambassador on his programme who said, unchallenged, he had no idea why Coronavirus was so big in Italy. Coronavirus is from China. The huge Italian textiles industry has for years employed and been taken over by the Chinese. That's why the silk ties and leather belts you buy in Florence markets for example are so cheap. There have been huge social tensions for years as the Chinese undercut the local workforce. You can blame greedy companies for utilising labour working to Chinese standards in Italy, ie cheap labour. This labour contains illegal immigrants (overstaying on tourist visas is popular) organised between the companies and China and resulting in many 'Italian' brands being Chinese owned. With such a large concentration of Chinese and a clandestine way of operating Coronavirus got in and is now killing the 2nd oldest population on earth. We have no idea how our cheap goods are being made in that communist country which likes to present a certain image at odds with reality. Slave and captive Labour and peasant exploitation and we don't care if the price is right. I have been to China and seen both faces. And I am talking about 'Han' China. The Han people are Taiwanese, Malay and Singaporean too but in China they are a different society. Why do you think the Cantonese people fear them, why Hong Kong is so alarmed. China is set on World expansion. It is raping Africa, it is threatening its maritime neighbours, expanding its navy to control sea lanes and project power, creating its own port in Pakistan, inhabiting sparsely populated Eastern Russia, buying property in major cities such as London and leaving them empty, eating unfarmed wildlife, and still it has a massive peasant class living in poverty. China has been made powerful by greedy Western companies and multinationals seeking no questions asked cheap labour. Now good Chinese people, usually Cantonese, and anyone who looks oriental are being subjected to suspicion and abuse. These people have been good citizens for years but the new China exploiting their peasantry and expanding by any means are something different. China owns huge amounts of foreign debt, they gave other countries by the balls hence the lack of public criticism. This plague affecting Europe and the USA will benefit China unless we stop using them as a workshop and wean ourselves off cheap goods or maje greater use of robotics. This is why Italy had a huge cluster of cases and from there it spreads across Europe.
