    Superbowl

On a side note, has it always kicked off this early? I seem to remember it kicking off at 1:30 normally, but as it's 11:30 I might catch a bit before sleep Answered it via google - its always been this time

Agree with that - Neil Reynolds is pretty annoying though.

    NFL Thread

Aye, agree with King. Too late for me on a school night but I’ll watch tomorrow - no massive preference but nominally I’m hoping the 9ers do it for those on the thread and the Shanahan connection. I’m just happy to see a Super Bowl without the patriots. Much as I respect Belichick and Brady, I’m bored ****less of seeing them in the Super Bowl.

On the point of fishing access - The UK has a strong position (a rarity) due to the amount of fish in our waters. The other side to that coin though is that we export 70% of the fish we catch to the EU and if there's no trade off in terms of access to UK waters then I suspect they will simply make it very difficult to export fish there and catch them somewhere else. Norway for example put a huge refrigeration warehouse in Gambia in exchange for access to their fishing waters - I know that to be true because I saw it when I was in Gambia - the unit broke down and nobody had the skills or the parts available to fix it so it was utterly useless after 6 months and the locals went back to smoking the fish (smells horrific) but Norway retained their fishing rights. It's not that hard for the EU to replace the access, they'll just go elsewhere. Pain in the **** for sure, but it's not like they can't find fish anywhere else so don't think it will be as much of a stumbling block as Boris hopes it will be.

Worse than Godfrey's. VAR is utterly ****. Can't wait until we go back down and escape it's clutches.

    Wuhan coronavirus

I spent 3 weeks in China in the summer. Couldn't pay me enough to go back. Great wall was immense but everything else was rubbish. Horrible selfish culture of pushing, shoving and barging everywhere - my 3 year old was knocked to the floor by some ignorant c*** who didn't even look to see what he barged into - he was pushed to the floor himself milli-seconds later and I made sure he understood why. Everybody spits, everywhere, including upmarket restaurants. Everywhere stinks to high heaven of either sewage or unidentifiable meat being boiled. The whole culture is just grim. A relative is the regional manager for China of a multi-billion dollar company - based in Shanghai. He regularly sends pictures through from various business dinners where they've been served bat soup and similar (obviously he is selective about what he partakes in). Point being - this isn't a problem of China's poor - this is a probelm of Chinese society as a whole. I went to Carrefour in Shanghai a couple of times (we were staying with him and his family whilst in Shanghai so this was a supermarket generally servicing the big gated ex-pat community). Tanks full of live fish/frogs/prawns/lobsters/crabs etc. All alive and healthy looking on the Wednesday when I went in. On Saturday, all the prawns were dead in a pile at the bottom of the tank, all the crabs were dead in the basket, half the fish were dead in the tank with the live ones still swimming around in there. There were 3 frogs left in the tank and 2 of them were dead but left in with the living one. Basic hygiene standards just not being met, and this was a supermarket in a posh area of Shanghai - at a bbq at my relatives house were several others who lived on the estate including the CFO of Royal Caribbean cruises so you get a picture of what kind of area this is in. I'd hate to think what the standards are at the wet markets serving the poorer communities. I am totally unsurprised at this outbreak of disease and if anything, I'm shocked it hasn't happened sooner. China needs to have a major reset of the entire way their culture looks at food or it won't be the last of these outbreaks. EDIT - Right on cue - major outbreak of Bird Flu too https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-02/china-culls-18-000-chickens-after-h5n1-bird-flu-cases-in-hunan

    Genuinely hate to say it

Given that he's been here 8 years and been such a big character, I would love to see him given a Tetteystimonial. I think he's earned it just as much as a Russ Martin, albeit Russ made about 70 more appearances.

I'm just impressed that whatever xenophobic basement dweller created that managed to spell "Queen's English" wrong. Unless of course the new language of the nation is to be the specific dialect from the Queens borough of New York, in honour of our new overlord Trump

    A calamity of howlers

Is it as good as the Villa one from the other week when Trezeguet (I think) tried to head it on the run, fluffed it, headed it down into his shin and it trickled past the keeper who was completely sold/wrongfooted on dealing with the header that never was, and didn't anticipate the complete **** up from Trezeguet? We never get that kind of luck this year. EDIT: Watched it - it is being added to the list. What a day for monumental **** ups!
  13. Not sure if "calamity" is the correct collective noun for a pair of absolute howlers in one match but that's what I'm going with. Have a look at these two. Hull's goal is probably the pick of the bunch, but Brentford's second is pretty spectacular. https://www.skysports.com/efl/championship/video/11923680/hull-1-5-brentford Bonus content - Leeds missing some absolute sitters before Wigan score direct from the corner kick with a Leeds deflection on the way. Leeds also have a stonewall pen denied too. Shame. https://www.skysports.com/efl/championship/video/11923977/leeds-0-1-wigan and the Scum's keeper shows off his fancy footowork for Peterborough's second https://www.skysports.com/efl/championship/video/11924204/ipswich-1-4-peterborough Sheffield United scoring thanks to some sensational goalkeeping from the Palace keeper. https://yfl.tostreamit.com/player/html/WPTlOgZSa6?popup=yes&autoplay=1

Aye but Farke in the Champs is a different prospect to those. Also worth noting how weak the league will be next year with WBA and Leeds likely to go up (unless they bottle it as usual). Wet Spam will be f**ked financially, they literally said they cannot afford to go down in their annual accounts (they were sitting pretty in the top 6 at the time so probably seemed to be impossible to implode like they have)

I'd rather be the big fish in the small pond. Competing in the Champs or participating in the Prem is the choice really. If we want to stay up and not spend any money then we'll end up doing a Burnley. I don't want to watch that **** every week. I remember the Hughton era and that was soul-destroying enough.

    Match thread - Newcastle

What is the point in being in the top league making up the numbers every week? I'll take the ups and downs of being a yoyo club over spending a decade being participants without a hope of doing anything and getting beat 60% of the time but just doing enough to stay up. We haven't got the money to make any kind of serious assault on the top 6 or even the top half. I'd rather take my chances going down than stay up and endure another **** season like this one.

If they don't go up this season then it'll be pretty much 15 years since they last beat us by the time we play again.

    Match thread - Newcastle

We've won 4 all season, and that was with a bang in form Pukki. Quite why anyone thinks we can win 8 of the last 13 or whatever with a misfiring Pukki is utterly beyond me. As is why anyone would even want to stay up. **** league, with 6 good teams who are the only ones who can win anything and 14 **** teams setting up not lose most weeks and a fair few of them playing hoofball to do it (not to mention corrupt VAR shafting us every week - how that tackle today was a yellow for Bentaleb when it was almost carbon copy of Godfrey - studs up, lunging, out of control.... of course VAR doesn't overturn that and send him off though). Bring on the Champs - can't come soon enough. It may not be full of superstars, but it's an honest league with proper fans not plastic tossers and **** refs who are genuinely just a bit ****, instead of still somehow being **** despite a world of technology available to help them.

We've been down since October. Anyone thinking we still have a shot is proilonging the misery and deluding themselves. Get comfortable with the fact we're going down and there's lots to look forward to in the Champs next year. It makes Saturday afternoons so much less stressful.
