According to Michael Bailey in the Athletic this morning. Apparently the fee is likely to be in the region of what we paid. No sell-on costs as they were based on profits, of which there won’t be any.

Does it say if it’s an “option” to buy or “compulsory” after the loan? I don’t have access to the athletic. Thanks.

  2. People go on about Plachetas speed but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him beat a man. Also zero end product. I’d much rather have Hernandez. At least on his day he’s a goal threat and probably our only player who attacks the defence and looks to take players on. Neither are good enough at the top level but I think Hernandez offers you more.

Well the new training gear is out and available and I must admit for the first time ever I'm considering getting a training shirt.  Very nice.

Yes, very smart. Hope the lotus design is like that on the kit.

Apparently hull have bid £3m for Scott twine and would be willing to go up to 4, at this price I think we should get involved, 20 goals, 13 assists last season and only 22 should be worth a punt even if we loan him out to a lesser champs team first season so he isn't blocked by pukki....

Twine is an attacking midfielder. He had an excellent season at league one level. It’s hard to tell how he’d perform at championship level though. I’m not a Dowell fan but I imagine at league one level he would look pretty impressive. Would Twine be an upgrade on our options here? I’m not so sure.

Why is it that the club seems to always have plenty of money to spend on pointless vanity projects, every penny we can spare needs to be directed to the playing budget this season to maximise our chances of promotion?

Come on soccerbot was worth every penny. Look at the improvement in …..erm…….hmmm…..Well hopefully the new swimming pool will do wonders for the lads butterfly stroke.

  6. I’m hoping smith will surprise us next season with attacking high pressing football. I think this season they identified how weak our midfield was and thought our best bet was to go direct and bypass it.

A managers “style” is dictated by the players he has at his disposal. A few new players and hopefully a more pleasing on the eye approach.

If true the interesting omission is any mention of the need for another striker. Myself, I believe none out of Sargent, Hugill  and Idah is top six of the Championship level. But there is the perennial question of who you could attract, given they might spend most time on the bench. It seems the idea is to provide goals from players in other areas. But if Pukki, assuming he stays, which he will, get injured or loses a bit of form...

PS. Looks potentially more extensive than the tinkering Smith seemed to suggest a while back.

Yeah I agree. Whilst I rate Idah I don’t see him ever being a natural goal scorer. Especially at the top level. Sargent I don't even see a footballer.
We definitely need to improve on our goals from midfield. Whilst I thought Rashica was poor in his first season I think, provided he stays, he’ll hit close to double figures. He was often pushed so far back last season that he was ineffective in most games. Given that we’ll hopefully be on the front foot he’ll get into much more dangerous positions.

Another superb Michael Bailey article has just gone up on the Athletic.

    The long and shorts of it;

    1. Two priority positions are athletic DM (Hayden) and athletic, goal scoring box to box no 8

    2. Beyond that squad needs to be trimmed. 35 professionals currently under contract for current season.

    3. If players can be moved on, left back, left center back, creativity in middle, wide forwards on both flanks but particularly right.

    4. Interest in Pukki from England and abroad. But no firm offers for him or anyone yet. Hoping for a big sale to fund more moves.

    5. Dean Smith leading recruitment so far. His template is for English/Scottish experience, ideally including Premier League football. Players must be peak age or below and ideally possessing athleticism that Smith believes squad sorely lacking.

    6. Smith also acutely aware that team needs better ability to score goals. This isn't elaborated on further (whether a deficiency of creativity or goal scoring).

    7. Webber thinks squad has plenty of proven and well regarded championship players who just didn't develop in time for premier league. Smith has sown some doubt into this view, believing squad in its current form may not have enough for push on top 2.

Would encourage you all to read if you can.

Not subscribed to the athletic so appreciate that. My guess is that Smith doesn’t rate the majority of this squad. Obviously finances dictate how much change there will be but give the chance I suspect he’d make wholesale changes.
No 3 is an interesting one. Think he’d love to move Gibson on and also bring in a proper left back as our options are basically wingbacks with a lack of physicality.

  9. I imagine after last season he’s going to see what transfer business we do before deciding if he wants to stay. I honestly don’t blame him either. Chasing lost causes and feeding on scraps can’t be much fun. On the other hand with potential investment/takeover on the horizon, this could be an exciting place to be to wind down his career.

Just listened to the interview, talks a hell of a lot of sense, I for one am proud of our club on and off the pitch, Webber is doing a great job running the club as most supporters would have wanted. Finance is always gona be an issue, that's why the academy is vital. He gambled on signings in the close season, no doubt they had quality but as a lot of foreign players, didnt deliver on the pitch, not  all Webbers fault.

He talks about the fans, we need to get the atmosphere back, lm sure it will be next season if we are doing well. But to create atmosphere you need singing, new songs and plenty of them, not Ye Army or OTBC 20 times a game, pathetic effort.

We need a Viera type next season, someone big and strong who can boss midfield, then lm sure we will be OK.

If your a fan you like excitement at games, promotion is great let's keep achieving it, ld prefer to be a yo yo club rather than a boring Burnley or a skint Sheff Utd!

It all depends what you want from your club I suppose. If it’s just to exist then he’s doing a cracking job. Me personally I want us to be the best we can possibly be.
I’m also far from proud of the club on the pitch. Webber has assembled one of our worst top flight teams ever. Under our current model we’re not going to be able to compete to buy the best players but we can definitely buy the correct type of player to at least make the games competitive.
Losing to a team with better players is fine. Losing to teams because we can’t get anywhere near them because of a lack of pace and physicality is firmly at webbers door.
