Ian Wright; What a dunce
king canary replied to cambridgeshire canary's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
It is one of those things that we as fans can find very tough to understand- we love football and thus all footballers should to. The idea some players aren't actually big lovers of the game can be jarring. -

Yeah its stupid but it is being presented as if Wright said this in a response to the Ben White situation, when he didn't. -

How are we this far into the thread without anyone pointing out this Ian Wright quote comes from 2014. I wonder if you asked him now if he'd stand by it- I'd imagine not. -
A view on turf moore from nr1
king canary replied to NeymarSmith's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
I think there is something in this. Some fans seem to have come to the conclusion that Farkeball is not just a good way to play but the correct way to play- and thus anything else is wrong, even if it is effective. Obviously everyone is entitled to their preferences and I do think there is a wider point about how the financial gulfs between divisions have started to change what fans can and do want from their teams. But the insistence that the club must have a very specific philosophy (and lets be clear, that philosophy was successful for two seasons out of 5) leads to some very unrealistic expectations. -

This season has been, I think an interesting killer for some of the common Farke myths that happened after he left. Myth one, that nobody could have gotten more out those players, has been undermined by seeing a significantly more limited Luton team already equal our points total from Farke's first season with another 8 games left. Myth two, that Farkeball with further investment could have been a success, has been undermined by seeing Burnley spend significant money while keeping this style of play and fail miserably. I get the idea about keeping Kompany/Farke for promotion and then trying to switch to a more pragmatic method the season after but that sort of 180 pivot is very difficult to pull off in one summer. What you need is to find a manager who can thread that needle ala Thomas Frank (or even Paul Lambert 10 years ago). But you also need the entire club on board. This is kind of what we wanted to do with Smith (which @Parma Ham's gone mouldy not incorrectly calls 'Premier League Lite') but it didn't work. Ironically I do think if we went up this year we'd have a better chance of doing a Luton under Wagner than we would have done under Farke. -
Record 1.4 million immigration visas given in past year
king canary replied to cambridgeshire canary's topic in Non-Football
Yep. I've said before I work in this sector and so spent quite a bit of time at conferences listening to presentations about this sort of things. EU applicants have gone down significantly post Brexit and as you say these are the kind of students who don't bring many dependents and also quite often aren't looking to live in the UK long term. Right now everyone is in a holding pattern waiting for the election with the hope that a new government might understand the financial black hole that cutting international student numbers without greater funding or an increase in tuition fees might make. It is interesting too that the more liberal wing of the Tory party recognises this is a stupid policy to pursue but the headbangers can't be stopped. -
Record 1.4 million immigration visas given in past year

Economically it has been shown, even accounting for dependents, international students are a net benefit economically. 65% of international students who come to the UK also return to their home country after graduation. Dependents have to show they have a certain amount of funds to get a visa and thus have money to spend in the UK economy when they arrive. Saying the government has no desire to make changes is wrong- they recently stopped people from bringing dependents unless they are on a research masters, which has seen a drop in applications from international students. What is driving this though is the changing demographics of international students- Chinese student numbers are dropping due to economic issues in China and these are being replaced with students from India or Nigeria, who likely bring more dependants. Limiting international student visa's to Russell Group Universities would do huge damage to a massive number of Universities, likely ending many of them. It would be hugely short-sighted and damaging to the UK economy, without the government committing to more funding higher education. UK Higher Education is an export we should be proud of, rather than thinking of ways to cut it off at the knees. The big question is why do we count students in net migration targets the same way we count an individual who is moving to the UK permanently. The vast majority of these students leave after a certain amount of time. Unfortunately despite often being the exact type of immigrants the UK needs they are an easy target when a government wants to point at numbers. -
January Transfer Window
king canary replied to Wimbledoncanary's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
I feel a bit sorry for Knapper with January in that he was put in tough position. On January 1st we were 13th and in average at best form having just lost to an average Millwall side who got reduced to 10 men. I was of the opinion January was ripe for consolidation and preparing for a proper promotion push next season by clearing out some dead wood. By the end of the month we'd picked up wins over Hull and West Brom and found ourselves 8th and in with a decent chance of top 6 which changed the plans. I don't think it would have been good to have thrown out pre existing plans and gambled on a short term resurgence at that point but we probably could have done with a loan or two who could have hit the ground running and added something straight away- not a big ticket guy like Carvalho at Hull but maybe someone like Mikey Johnston who ended up at West Brom or Sarmiento who went to Ipswich. -
I think though it is notable that Smith and Wagner both called out the squad for being quiet and lacking a strong mentality- it is quite unusual for a manager to do that. However, to be fair, it is also notable that neither of them felt the need to remove Hanley as captain suggesting that he may still be the best of a limited bunch when it comes to leadership. I do wonder if Duffy might be considered for Captain next season though.

Hanley has never been a good captain. He may be good for the dressing room but he's not a leader on the pitch. Incredibly quiet to the point he sometimes appears like he isn't that bothered when we concede. We've seen this season we're better without him unfortunately. Nice guy but if he's here past the end of the season he should be 4th choice at best.

You would yeah- it is on Netflix. Dune is pretty impenetrable story wise at the best of times and missing the whole first chapter would not be helpful!

I'd go with wingbacks personally- line up something like... Gunn Duffy McLean Gibson Stacey Sara Nunez McCallum Barnes Fassnacht Sargent
