Fisrtly, i dont think either of these players were good last season, especially russel martin, who i think is the worst right back we''ve had at the club. The first goal Nelson is way to sluggish, the 3rd goal russel martin got sucked in, lack of consentration and out of position completly. Also neither of these two are ''footballers'', there distrobution is awful and there vision is blinkered.I personally feel that Ward, (who is a good Championship defender as proven in the passed) just needs gamesIn a nut shell, i think Russel Martin should be shot, and Nelson dropped as they''re both out of their depth. What do you think ?
Athough I think Nelson was good last season I always have felt that the Championship may be a step to far for him, I have never thought Martin was up to much even in league 1 and even though it''s a bit harsh to suggest he should be shot lol I certainly feel uncomfortable about him being our regular right back this season.

  2.
Here we go again one bad result and some poor individual performances and we are all doom and gloom.

Only the deluded though this season was going to be any more than consolidation, half way at the end of the season will be fine

This team needs to bed down and get used to each other. Holt did not start because he was not fit, normally he will. The midfield by and large looked pretty good, particularly Crofts

The defence was poor. Ward is clearly not match fit and is rusty but he has played well at Championship level for several seasons so reasons to be optimistic. Drury we know is good, jury out on Nelson at this level. Ruddy looked nervous but who could blame him with the back 4 last night. He is no Forster but we could not afford him. I also remember Brian Gunns early games years ago they were awful and he went on to be a legend. Its up to Ruddy over the next dozen games to settle in and win over the crowd. Too early to panic though
I agree with you about Ward, as you say he''s clearly not match fit and i think he should play against Gillingham on Tuesday night to get another 90 minutes under his belt. I hope Lambert starts with Holt against the Gills to give him more game time before the next league game, I still think we look much better with a big lump in the side and hope Lambert recognises this and tries to bring another big striker in.

  3. Don''t think anyone with the exception of Crofts deserved any more than a 5 tonight, Russell Martin and Ward were a 3 at best with the rest of em 4 or 5. Can''t believe we had so little fire in our bellys as it was the first game of a new season, very disappointing but not going to go overboard on the strength of one performance. Needless to say we''ll have to get much better if we are to compete in this league.

If Championship defenders deal with Boyd more effectively than those in the SPL, it will surely stunt Middlesbrough''s aspirations this season. His wages alone must be a calculated gamble to buy a ticket to the Prem. Mind you, they seem to have a forgiving chairman so maybe Strachan thinks he''s got more time than others.

Is it me or does Middlesbrough FC just seem a bit sterile? Not a lot to enthuse about there full stop. Most camera angles seem to show more empty red seats than fans - and who would swap our current manager for theirs?
Totally agree with you about Middlesborough being a pretty boring club, even we have won more trophies than them. They got lucky in having a very wealthy fan in Mr Gibson who was prepared to put his hand in his bocket to bankroll them to the prem.I don''t think they particularly stand out above anyone else this year,  Boyd may or may not get goals in the Championship and even though I think they''ll be top eight I don''t see how they have much more about them than several other clubs in the division.

  5.
KDNCFC - well I am a super member and paid 29.00 and that was going to the castle mall to collect them so did not pay the extra 1.50 for me telephoning them (which is scandalous) so don''t know where your 27.00 comes from for members - it seems to me that this club is once again trying to fleece the supporters in regards paying for entry to the open day and these extra charges for telephoning and buying online.
Where are your tickets bomber? If you go on the offy site and click on tickets it lists the Watford game as grade A and the pricing for grade A says from  twenty seven pounds which I took to be in the Barclay and N + P. Jarrold and City stand central areas will be more expensive.

Theres a couple of things worrying me here. Firstly the fans have been begging the board to increase the capacity to 35000 on the basis that we would sell out every game. We quite clearly cant sell 28000. I know the arguments SKY prices Friday night but come on this is the first game of the season and that game is always grade A and when at home sold out in previous years. If it is Friday night / SKY a similar story is emerging for the Swansea game on a Saturday and not on tv. Whats the reasoning here prices again or people waiting to see if we succeed or fail in our first 2 games ?. Our new capacity 20500 season ticket holders and 900 Watford supporters and 1000 hospitality tickets means we only had just over 5000 to sell and we have only sold about half of those. Do some people really think that if we increase the capicity to 35000 at a cost of several million pounds the club will reduce prices to fill the seats - unless we want to go out of business I think not. McNally has shown what business sense he has and he is quite right to say that we will not increase the capacity to 35000 until it can be justified. Those who wont pay this years prices please remember this club has run at a huge loss by not being commercially minded. We cant have it both ways it is either a successfull club with money to spend or a bankrupt club that fills the ground every week but has everyone moaning we have sold our best players and bought rubbish and appointed a cheap option as manager. The strange thing will be sell out every week and there will be money if needed in January dont sell out every week then we wont be spending in January and then we wont be selling out towards the end of the season as these extra 10000 that people claimed we would get every week wont want to come and pay to watch a mid table championship team. I say support Mr McNally as he only has the success of this club in mind. The previous way saw us in league 1 and alsmost in administration. Trust me as a family we give up a lot of things such as a holiday abroad each year as Norwich City is our passion.

Those who decide to watch the game in the pub and spend £30 there instead remeber the pub lanlord wont be passing the money back to our club so they can invest in new players.
We have sold more than half of the casusal tickets avaliable, looking at the online ticket sales there doesn''t look to be much over a thousand tickets left and I''d imagine half of them will probably sell in the next couple of days. I''d imagine the attendance will be in the region of 25500 which for a Friday night tv match is very good. Had this game been on a Saturday afternoon I have no doubts it would have been a sell out.  It is far to early to say whether the Swansea game will sell or not but I''d be surprised if there are many tickets left especially if we get off to a decent start.
Dont disagree with your point, what I am saying is would we really have sold anymore if it would have been £25 per ticket and do we really need a capicity of 35000. This ground thing only seems to come up with success or PL football, at other times I reckon we will get the same crowd as we have always got. If we sell all our casual tickets this would net an extra £30k ie 5000 x £6.  If we finish up with 1000 tickets left we still make more money than last years prices thats without the extra revenue from additional seaon tickets. Most of our prices are still cheaper than most. Work that out over a season and it wont be far off the extra budget Paul Lambert has. Sell out every game and he will be given more money in January.
I think we would have sold a few more if tickets were cheaper,  the fact that people have the option of watching it on tv obviouslydoesn''t help and I''m sure Watford would have sold another 500 tickets if it was a Saturday game.  Had it have been Leeds or Ipswich we would have sold out a couple of weeks ago irrespective of the price of the tickets and could probably sell 30k for a game against either of them even if it was on tv. It will be interesting to see how quickly the Ipswich game sells out in November with it being on the BBC nd the tickets being even more expensive. If we get to the prem I would say that we definitely need a 35k capacity but 30k would be more than enough for the Championship.  I''ve been in CR with over 37k during the seventies and I''m sure we have more fans than we had back then, I''m sure those kind of figures could be replicated in the prem against the bigger clubs if we were to get there and increase capacity.

  8. Tickets for the Watford game are twenty seven pounds for members and twenty nine for non members, the only tickets that break the thirty pound barrier are in the central areas of the Jarrold and City stands and in the Watford section. I have a season ticket this year but was a casual fan last season and I paid twenty seven quid in the upper Barclay for Hartlepool and thirty two quid in the same place for the Leeds game in a lower league so I don''t really see that the prices are any worse than last year all things considered..

  9. I don''t think there''s any team that particularly stands out this year, many seem to be tipping Boro but I don''t really see anything that makes them stand out from the rest. If Forest can deal with the disappointment of going close last season they could well be the team to beat but other than that there is at least a dozen teams with a realistic chance of going up including us. We may have just come up but plenty of teams have come up from league 1 and had a very good first season in the Championship and let''s not forget we are at least a Championship level club now back at the minimum level we should be at.My main concern is our defence, with Whitbread looking like he''s going to spend more time in the treatment room than on the pitch we look to be a bit thin on the ground in that department. I think Ward will be ok once he is fully fit but Nelson will be found wanting against teams with pacy strikers and I don''t see our goals against column being to healthy with the defence we''ve got. Still think we will regret not signing a replacement for Holt as I don''t see us being as potent with a Jackson/Martin partnership as we would be with a big lump playing alongside Martin or Jackson.I think we will finish somewhere in the top half of the table with much depending on how much if any cash we have avaliable in January, if a takeover or major investment materialises before the end of the year and funds are avaliable we could finish nearer the top. As things are at this moment in time I see us finishing around tenth.

  10.
I went to the Supporters Forum and here are my observations.  Panel was Richard Gough (Customer Services), David McNally, Grant Holt, Ewan Chester (new Chief Scout).  Neil Adams was in the Chair.Asked about the season the phrases used by the panel were to "give it a go" (GH), "win more than we lose" (DMcN).  Not just consolidate.  Finances - much the same as we''ve heard before.  Our debt level is not sustainable in the Championship.  We''re seeking investment - if we can''t find it DMcN says we need a Plan B.  Promotion would of course be one solution.Ticket admin fee - is to help cover costs of issuing tickets.  Other increases - DMcN says we need to raise revenue where we can hence extra seats - and would consider putting more in next year eg 500 or 1000.  Only major increases eg top tier City Stand if in Prem.  Best value seats will always be to season ticket holders.  Player budget - first aim of the budget was to give PL a competitive player budget for the season - from there other revenue has to be found to pay for it. Turnover last season was circa £17m, aim for new season is £22m.Scouting -the new network is one scout in Scotland (tbc), North (Stuart McCall), Midlands (Alan Durban), South (not sure of the name but ex Head Scout at Spurs, Pressland poss surname).  No European scout, Flecky to scout non league.  Aim is to work ahead of the next transfer window to have a list ready for PL in areas he wants to strengthen.Academy - we are looking at opening further satellite centres to produce more home grown talent.  Current ones are in Hertord and Cambridge.  Holt fitness - not match fit as too much pre-season missed, will be training hard this week and hopes to be in the squad for Watford.  Asked about opponents this year he said he was looking forward to Forest at the City Ground and "sticking it up them" - clearly not happy how he was treated there.  I''m sure there''s other stuff too but this is all I could recall quickly.   [/quote/]Did he offer any hope that we are any closer to finding investment than we were 6 months ago?
When we first signed him I remember Motherwell fans saying on their forums that he was very good most of the time but was prone to make mistakes and so it is coming to pass. He is still a young keeper and young keepers tend to make silly mistakes which look worse on them because they often end in a goal, Greeno made some terrible mistakes in his early days here but he did improve over time and I''m sure Ruddy will prove to be a good keeper for us.[/quote/]

Yep Greeno certainly has eradicated all trace of howler''s from his game hasn''t he? ;)

Seriously though, he played a very good season in a decent SPL (read mid table champ) team and can only improve with age, the kid''ll do fine!!
Any keeper however good he may be will never totally eradicate mistakes from his game but as they get older mistakes do tend to become less common, to be fair to Green he has been a good keeper for West Shambles even though he has made the odd mistake. I think Ward and Nelson should also look at themselves and ask whether they could have done more to prevent that goal, Cahill had far to much room to turn and shoot because our central defenders weren''t close enough to him and they will need to sharpen their acts up before next week.

  13.
Not seen the goal, but maybe Nelson is under instruction to try and retain possession. Maybe Lambert is looking for players to keep the ball from the opposition more, leading to more scope for attacks.
In the position he was in I think Lambert would have encouraged him to hoof it into touch.

  14.
Second goal now on SSN - absolute howler from Nelson.
Don''t know what the hell Nelson was trying to do there, there was never a chance that a chest back was going to travel that distance and reach Ruddy. Should have hoofed it out of the ground,on the plus side Ruddy did well to parry the first effort.
