  1. Yes. We apparently agreed terms with his club but not with the player and the inference was that we then moved on to Nunez. As I recall it, Kone was supposed to be a more combative/physical player. Will certainly be interesting to see him - there was a suggestion that he was reluctant to move last summer in the hope that he'd impress at the World Cup and get a better offer from a bigger team.
  2. Bali Mumba doing his bit to keep Plymouth ahead of Ipswich. Just scored to put them ahead away to Burton who were winning at Half time.
  3. That was the most uplifting NCFC video I've seen for ages and so good when there hasn't been much to get excited about recently. Declan somehow manages to give the impression that we're fortunate to have him in the academy coaching set-up without coming across as at all arrogant. Seems a great guy. And Stuart Webber comes out of it well - immediately offering Dec the opportunity when the news about his retirement came out. In fact, it reminded me of what Russell Martin said a few years back about how good Webber was with the players. I know there's plenty to criticise but it's good to get a bit of balance.
  4. Good luck Caleb. The most interesting thing for me was that Declan Rudd now seems to be coaching goalkeepers in the Academy - I'd missed that bit of news. And also interesting to see that Caleb's self-appraisal doesn't include being good with his feet which seems to be indispensable for a modern goalie. Maybe that's what he's referring to when he talks about things he has to work on.
  5. I'm pretty sure I've read that people at Villa's academy have rated Aaron as at least a good a prospect as Jacob. But always tricky to gauge how much youthful potential will be realised especially with brothers!!! I see that Jacob Murphy is getting frequent starts (and an assist yesterday) for super- rich 3rd placed Newcastle. Whereas the possibly more talented Josh isn't getting game time with Oxford Utd ( injuries). Well done Jake and let's hope Josh gets back to full fitness
  6. A couple of things. First, Parma makes a suggestion that basing our team around Sarge up front will do very well if our aim is to finish between 4th and 8th in the Championship. I am at a stage where I'd be happy with that provided the general quality of play is pretty good and exciting. Even when I watch a Premier League match described as a "poor match between two poor sides" I end up thinking that those teams are way too good for us - maybe I haven't recovered from last season. I don't enjoy watching EPL matches nowadays even if they're really good if I start thinking about how we might compete with them. I prefer to thinking of it almost as another competition which has nothing to do with us - then I can enjoy it. I actually quite enjoyed Saturday's match. I thought it was a good performance and I'm happy watching us play like that even though it may not have been as good as Farkeball at its best - and even though we might lack weapons. A few special moments from Sara in the first half and Max's rejuvenated performance were great to watch. My second point comes from the news that Hasenhuttl has been sacked. The Guardian report from their match yesterday said "their pressing game is gone, replaced with a method that involves bypassing the central areas – criminally underusing James Ward-Prowse – and playing on the break." That sounds as though he/they came to a similar view to Webber that we needed to move away from Farkeball in order to survive/flourish in the Premier League. It doesn't seem to have worked for them so far..
  7. In terms of potential Crown jewels, Gibbs looks promising but as Parma says with Omobamidele it's a bit early to cash in. Difficult to know about Rowe and Springett as they've been unlucky with injuries when they would otherwise have got a chance to prove themselves at this level. But they both look as though they have the right mentality to make it.
  8. Still not working on my laptop. Nothing about Bad Gateway. I just get the adverts that are normally there but nothing else. Anybody experiencing something similar?
  9. I doubt he has done enough for us to make a profit. Judging on his performances with us, my guess would be that we will lose a bit. Hopefully not too much.
  10. Not working on my laptop but fine on my android phone
  11. Yes, I'd certainly keep Hayden in alongside Gibbs - with Gibbs pushing forward from time to time. And Cantwell a definite starter
  12. Onel started brilliantly and was real threat for the first 20 minutes or so. I guess that was the idea - that he could get an early breakthrough - nearly happened. He had some good moments later but it certainly paid off to bring on the subs. Sara and Nunez both did well (better than against Burnley) although of course it's easier later in the game. Nunez lost the ball in midfield ahead of their goal but also looked more dangerous that recently
  13. In my vague memory, there were already suggestions of a fallout with the Archant journos before the Attanasio story. Does anyone remember?
  14. It seems to be a bit of a theme that senior people at the club (Anthony Richens yesterday and Dean Smith today - Stuart Webber last season) are upsetting some supporters by being a bit defensive in response to supporter dissatisfaction. This defensiveness is obviously counter-productive when it manifests in suggestions there are shortcomings on the part of the supporters. This got me thinking about my own experience when I feel I'm being criticised or attacked. Many years ago I was running what was a successful business with almost universal praise from customers. One day I got a letter from a recent customer pointing out a list of shortcomings - unfortunately I was too quick to write back and to this day I still cringe at the memory of how defensive (to the point of subtle counter-attack) I was. But I don't think it's that rare - it's commonplace whenever something we are closely associated with is criticised - could be our family, our business, our football club, our religion, our political party, or any group we identify with. So it's understandable how people at NCFC are reacting but obviously unhelpful, so what to do? Should they have more media training? Emotional intelligence training? Or only let the people speak who have that intelligence address the issues of the disconnect with some supporters(I thought both Richens and Smith spoke very well on other topics)? Or maybe a senior figure or friend of the club should facilitate a review of the attitude towards supporters and the local media? That might be good for everybody. Any comments?? - perhaps your experience of being (or not being) defensive and what you suggest for our club to communicate more wisely
  15. If it's the Stranglers concert at St Andrews Hall that I remember, as I recall it Hugh Cornwell said there were skinheads (or some such) waiting outside to beat up the punks at the concert. He then said "Go out there and show them your strength". A bit naughty of him but I can't remember seeing any signs of trouble outside. Certainly nothing compared with football matches in those days
  16. He's turned into a top all-round player. I noticed a fantastic bit of wing play to set up a chance in their last game. It's a shame we hadn't manged to keep him after our loan (although it's been a few years for him to develop) but I imagine Southampton must feel even more strongly about selling him
  17. I'm only replying Robert just to keep this up the topics list in the hope someone more observant than me responds. I watched the match from about 20 minutes in. To be honest, I didn't notice him much but I think that's the nature of a player in his position that they don't have to stand out. I was at the Watford game and watched him very closely when he came on and he's certainly got the qualities that we miss - good defensive positioning, good tackling, able to do simple passing - but I'm not sure we should expect him to do anything more creative. I did wonder whether our rather more chaotic defending in the second half might have something to do with him tiring but that's pure conjecture on my part.
  18. I thought it was one of our best performances for a long time. Lots of fast and fluid attacking moves which just needed a better finish. Nunez was a bit better than in the last couple of games but I would still prefer Gibbs in there at the moment - more stability defensively and Gibbs is also a good passer and, as we saw with the penalty, can be an attacking force. And I want to mention Todd again as his energy levels were through the roof and he lasted the 90 minutes and generally got a lot more things right than wrong. Of course, a bit more end product would be good but I hope he stays in the side.
  19. What a wonderfully committed team performance. All of them but a special mention for Cantwell who is giving it everything
  20. And Luiz sent off just a few minutes after Emi came on. Interesting statement in Guardian preview "it’s the latest last-chance saloon for Steven Gerrard. Stories of Mauricio Pochettino coming have been hotly denied by Villa’s people but the fans ain’t happy with Steven, not least because Steven’s dour demeanour is reflected by the sheer unwatchability of his team." A bit ironic that Gerrard replaced a manager who is seen in a similar light by our fans
  21. Harrison Reed has matured into an excellent Premier League player. Excellent goal too.
  22. I'm very surprised so many people have included Nunez after his performance first half against Watford (before being hooked) and how poor he was when he came on against Luton. Poor guy needs a break. Perhaps the world Cup will be a good time for him to go home and remember what a good footballer he can be.
