I did suggest that after Bryan Gunn was sacked that history may judge his short managerial reign differently as time has passed and the Colchester game is long forgotten.
And I suggest that history will always show he took us down, winning only 6 of 21 games in charge, and then led us to a record home defeat against a mediocre (no offence, Cam) League One side who didn''t have to play particularly well to rout us.

If your argument is he was a decent Head of Player Recruitment, fine.  Managers do more than sign players though.  They have to build a team.  Gunn failed.
The title is " Should we give Bryan Gunn some credit in his transfer dealings...."

  2.
Agreed, TBF he did make some very good signings at this level, but then again some bad ones...[:|]
Not sure how manyreally  bad ones he has made?........ As I said maybe in a years time history will be kinder.

I think any manager who has over a 70% success rate in the transfer market is doing incredibly well.

I think even if you look at the very best managers of all time, even they have bought some players who have have been rubbish for one reason or another.

As much as I think Lambert has changed the mentality/shape of the team I actually think he is pretty happy overall with the strength of the squad.........

If he wasn''t I am sure he would have stayed with Colchester.

  3. I did suggest that after Bryan Gunn was sacked that history may judge his short managerial reign differently as time has passed and the Colchester game is long forgotten.

Here is list of Bryan Gunn''s signings while in charge and their (estimated from paper talk) cost

    Theoklitos (free)

    Askou (free)

    Nelson (free)

    Wiggins (100K)

    OTJ (at most 250K)

    Hughes (free)

    Gill (free)

    Whaley (150K)

    McVeigh (free)

    Holt  (450K)

    Maric (free)

    McDonald (25K)

My opinion (so far) is the following are good value (in relative terms)

    Askou (free)

    Nelson (free)

    Hughes (free)

    McVeigh (free)

    Holt  (450K)

    McDonald (25K)

The following are questionable/unproven because of lack of games/injuries ect ect (but could turn out to be good or bad)

    Wiggins (100K)

    OTJ (at most 250K)

    Gill (free)

    Whaley (150K)

    Maric (free)

Probably only 1 who was an outright mistake.

    Theoklitos (free)

And even then we may be a bit harsh to judge on one game, although the new manager watches him in training and is not inspired to give him another shot, which is very telling IMHO.

The selling of Marshall and Sammy more than covered all the signings along with the rebate for Holt.

  4.
Worst is Number one, Best of bad bunch is Number 50
    So where did Brian come?

    Number 19 Bryan Gunn
    Norwich (January 2009 - August 2009)

Bryan is probably cursing his daughter Melissa right now.

She''s the one that set up a ''Bryan Gunn for Norwich manager'' group on Facebook.

2,000 people signed up, Delia gave him the job and the Canaries were promptly relegated and then hammered 7-1 in their League One season opener by Colchester.

Thats not too bad for a first try.

    .............................................................................................................................................................

    48. Glenn Roeder
    Newcastle (Feb 2006 - May 2007);Norwich (Oct 2007 - Jan 09)

After taking over from Graeme Souness in February of 2006, Roeder expertly guided Newcastle from the relegation zone to a well-earned 7th spot.

Despite a promising start the following, after winning the Intertoto Cup, inconsistent form and only one win in ten games ultimately forced his resignation...
End of the Roed: Glenn Roeder was sacked by both Newcastle and Norwich

End of the Roed: Glenn Roeder was sacked by both Newcastle and Norwich

And then there was Norwich. In his first season at Carrow Road, the former West Ham boss saved the Canaries from relegation.

But in a carbon copy of his St James'' Park departure, Roeder was once again handed his P45.
I don''t get how Roeder is in the top 50 when both of those stints he was actually relatively "successful" in the first year of each...........(i.e. he was successful for 50% of each stint)

The vast majority of management stints are totally devoid of any success whatsoever..........If we look at Worthington he had far more mediocre seasons than good ones at CR.

Add that to his horrific stint at Blackpool................But I bet he doesn''t make the list.

The truth is Roeder is/was not a well liked person either by the fans or by the press.............Sounds like an excuse to put the boot in rather than factual reporting.

  5.
Are the highlights on canaries world any good or do they just show the same footage as on the BBC site?
I''m not sure whether it''s worth the money. Many thanks.
Personally I think its well worth it.

You get extended highlights which you don''t get anywhere else.............(as much as 10-15 mins on some games)

I would be willing to pay more if they had 15 mins of highlights on every single game.

Since they did away with DRM protection the videos and the matchday audio have been rock solid on my end.........

I am 6000 miles away so I would think if anyone is having problems its more to do with local connections........

Obviously if you have a slow connection then wide screen videos are not going to play correctly.

Its kind of like asking why doesn''t this moped do 80 MPH.......

Today I made my trademark summer visit to Colney and saw Doherty, Hoolahan and Maric training with the youth team. This could mean that Doherty and Hoolahan could be moving on but I was confused to why Maric was over there and thought that surely we wouldn''t sell him because he''s hardly played. Also watched a game of two 11-a-side games. One side consisting of what I think must be the starting line-up for Saturdays game ...

    Rudd

    Semmy, Askou, Nelson, Drury

    McVeigh, Smith, Hughes, Lappin

    Holt, Cureton

... and the other including players such as Whaley, Mcdonald and other youngsters. If the above team is indeed the starting lin-up for the Hartlepool game then I, firstly, think that Lambert must think quite highly of Cureton and must think he''s worth a punt at this level and secondly, it is worth trying to secure  new defensive partenership in Askou and Nelson. I know that a lot of people that i''ve spoken to don''t rate Nelson because of his performance gainst Colchester but in my opinion, I think that everyone in that team was rubbish in that game but needs another chance (I would even give Theo one more chance, pehaps aginst Brentford in the JPT). Should be interesting!
Thats the end of that then!

  7.
Just to add, my Glenn Roeder bit has been totally changed.  He infact has the best  record at Newcastle in recent history so i wrote about his time at Norwich, which was nothing like his time at Newcastle.

Ah well... I guess you have to be a Norwich fan to know how much worse he was at Norwich than at Newcastle.
I think Roeder gets a raw deal cosidering he was technically a sucess in his first year at both Newcastle and Norwich...........

Technically Worthington had way more mediocre seasons than good ones.........

    Grant was horrific...........

Roeder gets on the list because he is an arrogant bastard rather than his achievements..........

I think we are still paying Roeders wages as he was signed till 2010......

  8. With Hoolahan you almost have to set up your team around him.........

Its almost natural that you leave yourself stretched on the left side when defending........

It drags some of the central defenders/midfield out of position.

With a more solid left sider like Lappin who can defend, you have a shape that is much more difficult to exploit.

Lambert said yesterday that they (Colchester against us) actually set up to exploit the left hand side because they knew Hoolahan was playing.

I think Lambert wants the the more solid 4-4-2 that players can move in and out of when we have injuries......

My vote is for selling Wes and bringing in Hucks in October as cover/impact bench player........
I think Hucks would crush off the bench late in the game as opponents tire.......

Another negative for Wes is he seems a bit too sulky/moody.
Not good if you are trying to create a positive dressing room attitude.........

Getting the huff after winning 5-2 is a bit out of order........

Another who may be on his way for the same reasons is Whaley.
Going by the reports at Preston and here he has a bit of an attitude sometimes.
He either needs to STFU and get on with it or he is back into the same position he was in at Preston.....

  9.
Trouble is it sounds like Lambert is expecting it to be like it was at the start of the Col U game every week. He keeps going on about the atmosphere - he might be disappointed!
To be fair to Lambert he said on the CW interview today that its TOTALLY up to the players/coaches to give the fans something to cheer about............

He said the fans have been magnificent and deserve a LOT more than they have been given.

  10. Robert Rosario used to get a lot of stick in the 80''s

Scored a few good goals but missed a LOT of sitters too........

Selling him for 600,000 in 1991 might have been the single best bit of business Norwich have ever done (inflation adjusted!)

He went on to score 11 goals in 85 games for both Coventry and Nottingham Forest..............

He came to the USA and scored 7 goals in 73 games for Carolina and Charleston..............

  11.
Shouldn''t McNally bej fired without any compensation if we don''t get promotion?
I think this is a good question.........

Lets say Lambert fails to do anything and gets the boot............(not unrealistic TBH)

McNally didn''t appoint Gunn but he did approve of giving him funds to bring in 12 players when obviously he didnt fancy him as manager.........

If he then brings in Lambert and he fails, its fair to assume someones head should roll...............

Or do we just keeping appointing and sacking managers and backroom staff..............

The irony is that I read that Roeder signed a contract with us to 2010............

If he hasn''t been paid off already then we are currently paying for 3 managers and God knows how many assistants/coaches ........

We might just need to sell Hoolahan to pay all the people off we have sacked..........

I don''t think it amounts to anything at all while it is confined to sports columnists.  The EDP could of course have done a page one write off: "Is it time for Delia to go?" but have not so far done so.

If the story starts appearing on page one, rather than sport, or appears in a leader column then you could, perhaps, read more into it.
Smoke without fire?

Interesting that Lamberts press conference was the first managers PC not attended by Delia and MWJ ?

Was the unanimous vote to sack Gunn really unanimous?

Why are there not more questions of McNally about the timing of the sacking (so late before an important game) and the reason they let Gunn bring in so many players if they didn''t think he was the right man for the job?

The poor answer McNally gave the local press over the gag order on the players? (see Chris Lakeys podcast)

Not sure why he is getting such a free pass at the moment?????

  13.
Warnock has gotten away with his comments about Bristol and the ref for that ''goal''. How? He acted like a complete and utter prat after the game. He talked about fair play yet refused to shake ant Bristol players hand?! Yes it was a terrible mistake for the ref. But to have comments like that thrown at you after the game was out of order in my opinion.
The "powers that be" are incredibly embarrassed and would prefer it all went away.........

This just makes the calls for "instant replays" much louder which they DON''T want.

The referees association dont want it.

Punishing Warnock would have dragged the situation out more..................

I am pretty sure some words were said "off the record" to him...........

Its all about context............... the 4 officials have to be seen to be punished and removed  for a while.

  14.
I think they just need to do this again at the end of the transfer window, theres bound to be a few changes and at the moment its quite farcical that this squad photo will go down in history as the 2009/10 squad. How football has changed, when they took that picture 3 weeks ago do you think anyone realised it would look dated in under a month?
"They" is just me...........

  15.
I think the Archant mic was the paper cup with added string!

On a related note......... anyone find it interesting that the only board member at the PC was McNally...............

Now it would be easy to conclude that as we have a game tonight there are logistic/travelling problems but.........

Normally with such a major/important announcement we see the whole board giving opinions on why they have picked the right man!

Am I reading too much into it or are there problems behind closed doors?

Are the chairman and majority shareholders still alive?

We sacked one manager and hired another yet we have seen not one comment on either event...........very very strange.

How about the local media ask some questions or can we conclude they have given up asking difficult questions?
Just as a follow up, I did a little research (I should be a paid journalist!)............ Delia and MWJ were at all 3 of the previous managers press conferences (Grant, Roeder and Gunn)

I couldn''t find out if they were at Worthys in 2000, I asume they were. The chairman and CE were also present except for Gunns because they had both left the club.

Foulger was also present at Gunns (the whole 3 man board!)

    So nobody finds this unusual?
