Derby Canary

"Giving it a go" was of course always the right strategy. The problem was we did not ''give it a go'' at the right time by preparing ourselves day one. Our problem at the time was also that the people giving it a go board/management were not qualified/have the nous/experience to make the right decisions and the inevitable mistakes ensued. We never learn and the same mistakes/situations continue!

Not interested in players that will only ''play'' under certain Managers - or if they have toothache! Chris Martin''s attitude has been as bad (in recent seasons) up here as it was at Norwich. The same too at Fulham where he was not allowed to break his loan contract to return to a better contract at Derby!

Have to smile when I hear Webber/Balls talking about the wastage/cock ups that have taken place over the past 4/5 years leaving us in our current predicament. Of course the blame lies totally with those individuals that ''are no longer with us'' and nothing to do with the ''nice/well meaning'' people that remain. It is patently obvious that the problems we have are caused by a board stuffed with individuals that are not fit for purpose, repeatedly hiring management that are not qualified to do the job. What I wanted was a board/manager that understood the gulf between class etc etc between the Prem and the Championship and that not immediately investing in suitably equipped players could only have one outcome. What actually happened was lots of ''noise'', not only generated by agents/press was made about targets but next to no investment at that key stage was made. Hard to apportion blame but it quickly became clear that Neil had not got a clue at that level and he should then have gone. It has also been clear for much longer that the board are unfit through lack of football knowledge to run a Club but they are sadly determined to stay!

We got what we deserved with boys trying to do men''s jobs and our Club, as you would expect will suffer the consequences for years to come.

We have now degenerated into a very very ordinary Championship outfit and that is our future. We have asked for it.

Striking the difference in the changed attitude of our people and the way that expectations of the fickle football fan have been managed by Messrs Webber and Farke. Yesterdays result under previous regimes, playing against a poor(ish) side (they were slaughtered 5-0 up here and looked awful) and 10 men for 20m plus would have been met with a chorus of boos at the final whistle instead of the euphoria that we heard as we scraped a draw! Webber''s early announcement that we can expect little activity in the January window is a further example of that management of expectation. To offset disappointment he claims however that much work has been done in identifying suitable targets for the Summer and even that discussions with agents etc has already started! Much as I admire this man, particularly with his forward planning I suggest that this has a whiff of exaggeration about it. How can he decide on suitable candidates without first knowing which division we will be operating in. Unless of course he has a good idea and perhaps a plan A and/or B!

As far as managers are concerned, the one really inexuscusable decision was to keep Gunn on after relegation. You could argue about some of the other choices, and the timings of sackings, but you would struggle to get a consensus here on the latter. As for the former, it has to be borne in mind that we get to pick from the third tier of managers - not the dozen or so universal geniuses, not the up and comers who have already proved themselves in the Premier League, but the reliable old stagers (think Warnock or McCarthy), the old stagers who might be on the slide (think perhaps Pardew), the promising newcomers who have done well, but only with one club, and that down below, or the wild cards from overseas.This week I came across a revealing statistic on a Guardian Football Weekly. Manchester United have won the league a record 20 times, but only with three managers and one of those was in charge before world war one. After him Busby won it five times and Ferguson 13. In other words, every other Man Utd manager has failed. One of the biggest clubs in the world, able to have its pick of the best managers, with winning the league a realistic ambition (a bit akin to us getting promoted to the Premier League) has made failed choice after failed choice. [/quote] Not really so revealing Purple Canary if you consider that those two lads managed Man Utd for a combined total of some 51 years! The problem with NFC board is not that they are void of good intentions. It is more that they have not got the slightest clue when it comes to football knowledge/strategy and that they compound the problem by recruiting others (friends and relations)that are even worse! The best Managers in any industry are those that know when to call it a day....sadly that does not apply to Delia!
