  1. I am not sure whether Rupp is the answer for no 10 position. He put in a very good workmanlike performance yesterday, but quite often was caught in possession whilst looking to make a pass. I have not seen enough of Dowell to decide where his best position is. Stiepermann is coming back from injury and has played in the no 10 position, but he is another who is caught in possession too often. Personally, I think Cantwell would be a good candidate if he stays at the club.

  2. I cannot see Farke changing it unless there are injuries. You are more likely to see Stiepermann back in soon as Farke has been waxing lyrical about how valuable a player he is. I watched him play for the u-23's yesterday in his comeback game against Leeds and on that showing I would rate Dowell and Sorenson or even Josh Martin ahead of him.

  3. I agree that he is a talented player, and we saw that before he was injured. We have a strong squad now and it will be difficult for him to get a start. Being an attacking midfielder he is unlikely to replace Buendia, Cantwell, and Vrancic who are all playing well.

I can just imagine the scenes at Conley this morning.

Webber bursts into Farke’s office waving his phone.

”Here Daniel, have you seen this post on the Pink Un?”.

”No. Why, what does it say?”.

”Apparently teams have now worked out how we play! How frustrating! Especially as no-one has a clue about how any other team in this division will approach a game, but they know what we will do!”.

    ”Sh*t! What can we do?”.

”It’s ok, the answers here as well”

    ”Fantastic, what is the secret?”.

”Well, you know how we’ve spent nearly four years coaching the team to play in a certain way? And bought players whose skills fit into that style? And instilled the same ethos into the academy which has had all that money and effort invested into it?”.

    ”Yesss....”.

” That’s all wrong! We should be doing it differently! We should be better at attacking, score more and not let in goals despite weakening those improvements we’ve made to our defence!”.

“Oh, and apparently we risk losing the ball when the goalie passes it to a defender, so a random boot upfield will work much better”.

”For sure! Why didn’t we think of that? Give me that phone and let’s get cracking...”.

Very creative and  funny response but sadly you missed the point. If you had read it properly  I suggested tweak the tactics not change completely. I have no idea where you read a random boot upfield. You may have missed your vocation and perhaps you should consider becoming a BBC reporter.

I think it’s the beauty of football that teams have very different styles and each game can be a different challenge, this seems particularly prevalent in the championship. Brentford remind me a bit of ourselves in the championship 2 years ago, very expansive and very open, we all know how that ended up in the premier but might well be good enough to blast themselves up. Swansea are very well drilled and try and overload in wide areas, they have been fortunate with injuries to date and hourihane gives them quality no doubt about it. I do think teams will start to set out to frustrate both of them the way they do us now so it will be an interesting run-in.

I think our challenge this season has been a lack of goals, or more importantly threat from number 10. It has left Pukki so isolated at times and I think the lack of pace anywhere has restricted our ability to hurt teams in transition. I think Hernandez might be the key for us at the tail end of this season, He backs opponents up and can commit defenders to make space elsewhere. I’d like to see him start on the left and Cantwell/ Buendia both be interchangeable and let Aaron’s get down the right. Sorenson naturally won’t need to venture as far and gives us cover at the back. Dowell can be the main plan B and we need to get him upto speed quickly and rotate those 4 as needed. I would also be tempted to give Pukki the next 3-4 games and the change up for Idah if not working and bring A fresh Teemu on after 70 to go at tiring legs.

I agree with most of what you say. We can start a new run of wins with Stoke on Sat.

Admittedly we do start games well and tail off a bit, but considering we scored lots of our goals in the last 15 minutes we do finish well too.

We keep control and during the games we move the ball really well, that’s why so many managers rate us. The last four games we’ve kept the ball but far too negatively. That will change with Buendia back in. Sorensen,Skipp & McClean in midfield with a fluent idea allowing McClean to push up in the number 10 might work.

I hope you are right because attack is the best form of defence.

It’s noticeable how much cover both Buendia and Cantwell do when both playing, so we move the ball far quicker going forward when both are playing, as Aarons and Sorensen get forwards more.

Two things stand out for me, we’ve been poor in front of goal, we have to convert in front of goal and we need to get back to playing good fast flowing passes, we cut teams to bits when we do.

As I said in my original post when we move the ball quickly no team can live with us,  unfortunately we only see this sort of movement perhaps 10 mins in a game.

It may have changed but we had created more chances and played more forward passes than anyone else in the division only a few games ago so that doesn't really add up.

We are lucky if we create 3 or 4 chances a game. We can often play 20 sideways, backwards and forwards passes in our own half and as soon as we get into the opposition half it breaks down.

You don't think we are a positive team from the outset? I've not seen us sit back against one team this season and in almost every game this season we've started significantly on the front foot as evidenced by possession, created chances, shots, goals and ultimately results.

That front foot approach doesn't happen enough for me. We pass sideways and backwards more than any other team in this division. The opposition allow us to bring it into their half and then challenge us to get past a well organised defence. It is not surprising that we don't have too many shots on goal as we continually pass it and get nowhere. This is the way Farke plays.

I'm assuming you mean Hugill. Is it really a Plan B?

Do you notice our style of play changing much when Hugill plays?

Hugill only plays when Pukki is injured, that is not a plan B. From what I have seen so far this season Farke will go to a back 3 and bring on all the attacking players, often late on e.g. when we were 2 down to Swansea, that isn't a plan B either.

I dont really agree. Aarons is great at dribbling past opponents but he's football intelligent and knows when to do it and when not to.

Sorensen on the other hand will always struggle as hes on the left side and will only feel comfortable cutting inside.

The players are well versed in risk vs reward and make the right decision more often than not. We just don't see it because the mistake never happens. Its one of many reasons why we are top.

We can agree to differ. I have watched Norwich teams play for over 50 years and given the choice I will always go for those managers who are positive from the outset. If we are lucky enough to get promoted, and Farke goes for the same tactics as he did last time, we will be straight back down.

Excellent news, top 4 next season is back on if City gain promotion.

It is often the way you approach the game that will determine the outcome. When we played Boro at home we didn't get a shot on goal and played our usual slow game. When I watched the highlights of Brentford away to Boro it was attack from the beginning from Brentford. Over the years I have watched Norwich teams play the Brentford way and I prefer that to our current tactics.

If we were so easy to work out and counter then I doubt we'd have ever got near top of the table in the first place. You have 4 or 5 matches to support your claim, I have 3 or 4 x the amount you do to support mine.

I think we have been quite lucky in a number of games, but I am not complaining that we are still top. I have lost count of how many times in matches either Aarons or Sorenson have received the ball in space, but their first instinct is not to go forward, but stop and pass it back to either Hanley or Gibson. The opposition know that if you close those players down they are unlikely to try and go past you. I hope I am wrong and this is just a blip, but we have some winnable games coming up now so let's see how many we win.

Which midfield or wide player would you drop to play 2 strikers? Rupp or Plachetta

Why would you change zonal marking at corners when we haven't conceded from a corner for a long time?  Swansea

Why do you think that if we leave a player up for opposition corners that that player will actually get the ball if we do clear the corner? I said you would have an outlet, at the moment if we win the header it goes straight to the opposition.

Why do you think that we end up giving the ball away when Krul gives it to one of our central defenders? You do realise that this actually hardly ever happens don't you? You must be watching different game to me as it regularly happens.

  15. I think it is fair to say that most opposition managers know exactly how we are going to play, and can plan accordingly. I would like to see our coach tweak our tactics so as to give the opposition something to think about.  My suggestions would be to possibly start with 2 strikers, as playing just Pukki makes it easy for their centre backs. I would like him to change the zonal marking for corners and leave our quickest player on the halfway line so we have an outlet when we win a header or Krul catches the ball. Finally, cut back on the insistence of Krul to give the ball to either central defender every time, invariably those defenders are pressed and we end up giving the ball away. These are not major points but it would at least be worth trying  occasionally. When we move the ball quickly going forward no side can handle us, unfortunately we spend more time passing sideways and backwards and we become predictable.

  17. It was inevitable that we would have to sell because we, like other smaller clubs, don't have rich owners who are prepared to spend whatever it costs to stay in the Premiership. I listened to an interview a few years ago when the owner of Leicester was asked how much was he willing to spend to keep Leicester in the Premiership and he replied however much it takes.

We will continue to attract good youngsters because they can see that they will be given the chance to play, irrespective of how young they are. They too will in turn move on, and we will reap the benefit when we sell them. We are still financially much better off than the majority of teams in the Championship.

I do believe that Aarons, Buendia, Cantwell, Godfrey and Lewis all did well in their first year of premiership football and may well have stayed with us if we had not been relegated.

I also believe they will be more likely to improve under a manager whose preference is to move the ball quickly and forward, as opposed to sideways and backwards.

Hopefully after 16th Oct Farke can concentrate on putting together a squad to challenge for promotion.

  18. After all the comments that have been made I stick with my original statement that I think he lost the dressing room before lockdown. If offers come in and are accepted for Aarons, Buendia, Cantwell and Godfrey then four of our young players who like to play on the front foot will have gone; five if you include Lewis. I don't think any of these players enjoyed continually having to stop going forward and pass the ball sideways or backwards. I am happy to admit I was wrong if he is still here after 10 games.

  19. I believe he may well have lost the support of a number of players who are not happy with his style of play.

I have not seen any real passion from the team for a long period.

I personally don't like zonal marking, slowly playing it out from the back, sideways and backwards passing, not leaving a player up for opposition corners, and not playing two up front, especially at home.

I might have got it wrong, but this doesn't look like a side fighting for the club.

  20. I know Farke wants to stick with his system but it just isn't working. I would like to see him really surprise Soton and do away with the zonal marking and go for man marking. If he is feeling really adventurous then leave Buendia up on the halfway line for their corners.I know he likes to play a defensive midfielder so put Godfrey there alongside Buendia, Cantwell and Mclean. Bring back Zimmermann to partner Hanley with Aarons and Lewis making up the back four. Then at least for home games play Drmic with Pukki up front.

  21. We should not be surprised that we come under so much pressure because our players are set up to mark a zone, hence they do not pick up runners.  Farke will not change his style of play even though we are being outplayed. She'd Utd midfielders move the ball very quickly, ours dwell on the ball and have it taken off their feet. 45 mins to try and change it and be more competitive.
