Much of the problems of the NHS could be fixed by fixing instead what goes on outside hospitals and GP surgeries. On any day there are 14,000 mostly elderly people occupying acute and general hospital beds who don't need to be there as they can't be discharged due to the lack of community care .And with an increasingly elderly population things will get worse. Last year there were 165,000 vacant social care jobs . A&E departments are clogged because there are no vacant beds to move people on to. Boris Johnson remember said outside no 10 when he was elected he had a plan to fix social care but of course did nothing. The burden is instead pushed onto local councils who don't have the funds to provide home care or the staff. What is needed is a massive investment in community care . It is one problem that can be solved by throwing money at it. But no government wants to commit the funds. You can't have all encompassing community care and tax cuts. A party that goes into an election with a manifesto of no tax cuts but increases in NI to fund the long term care of the elderly is not going to win. I see things getting worse.

A very misleading statement. In 2019 average life expectancy for a male was 79.9 years . But if you reach that age your life expectancy is 88 years. So someone who died of covid at the average age of life expectancy for a male was robbed of 8 years of life.
