  1. The interesting question is what his arrival implies about what SW and DF see as our needs for next season. Heise is an experienced 27-year old, so hardly fits the orthodox view of our recruitment strategy of "young, talented and with likely added re-sale value".
  2. Yes, in the cliche beloved of match commentators and "expert" summarisers, "I've seen them given". But my question is: why the constant focus on that sort of thing at all? Is a game of football nothing more than a series of incidents from which commentators can generate some artificial controversy? There was a time when, listening to a commentary, you could pretty accurately reconstruct how the game was going from moment to moment; nowadays you can end up without any insight at all into the actual game that's taking place.
  3. The point that Wooster was making, and that you and THB are missing, Herman, is that Lambert didn't suddenly change when he left us for Villa. Lambert is Lambert and was no different when he managed us (and if you want to know how "respectful, classy and humble" he was prior to that, try asking Colchester fans). What HAS changed is that the fans now vilifying him were totally unconcerned about how "respectful, classy or humble" he was as our manager, simply because he brought us success. When Lambert jumped ship to Carrow Road, many on here were gloating at getting one over Colchester, the "triumph" being -- yes, getting that classless, bigheaded, respect-lacking individual to jump ship and take over our team.
  4. It's not so much whether they are watching the same game, but whether they know anything at all about football, since they seem to do anything they can to avoid actually having to say anything meaningful or insightful about the play. Furthermore, they clearly have no sense of responsibility as regards encouraging e.g. respect for referees or a proper understanding of the rules of the game. Like the tabloids, they seem concerned only with what they can invest with controversy.
  5. Power to your elbow Wooster. I think I recognise a kindred spirit, someone who is a football supporter but eschews the institutional nastiness of football fandom.
  6. Not sure what your point is exactly Harry. I was complaining about the ineptitude characteristic of the BBC's live reporting of the match (and indeed every match). The reporters appear incapable of intelligent assessment of what they're watching, and the whole "coverage" consists in a series of superficial comments and mindless attempts to say something controversial. There was a good example of the latter in the coverage of our game last night when, referring to Stiepermann's tackle and yellow card, the reporter couldn't wait to start questioning the referee's decision. I don't think there was one insightful comment on the game throughout the entire coverage.
  7. Over here we don't have weather houses nutty, we have weather sticks, long known to Native Americans to forewarn of wet or dry weather. I had one in my yard, but since we get so little seriously wet weather in the Valley, it forgot what it was meant to do and kept pointing upwards whatever. Bit like us Happy Clappers ..........
  8. Meanwhile the BBC's live coverage by Jay Freeman consolidates the Beeb's reputation for reliable, balanced and always truthful reporting: "This is a tremendous game for the neutral." Eh? 🙄
  9. Not just them in WBA's case, young Holgate doesn't look much interested either. The only bright spark is Gayle.
  10. Pretty good description of most threads on this forum! Not sure about the "heaven" bit though Onel comes over as such an engaging character; great story and hopefully a dream soon realised.
  11. I'm afraid pete's heartfelt plea to be ignored will largely fall on deaf ears -- most of us have pressed the Ignore button long ago ........ 😉
  12. Actually we haven't "been here before", ever. Previously we have always followed the traditional British model of club management which has short-termism built into it, along with near total upheaval in staff and squad with every managerial change and hence no continuity in playing style (making consistent development through all levels -- youth teams, U23, first team -- more or less impossible). To say there is no such thing as "long term" in football is simply to project the entrenched short term thinking of too many British clubs and too many fans onto the game itself.
  13. Question is nutty, can you be a fickle fickle fan, or are fickle fans irremediably fickle? (I think that deserves a Parliamentary debate, don't you?)
  14. Yes, but why? What possible reason would there be for "doom and gloom"? We are in a good place, and would remain in a good place even if we were to end up relegated after one season in the EPL.
  15. Cream rises to the top but that doesn't mean that being top is what constitutes cream.
  16. The focus on money ignores factors that are just as, or even more, important, factors that have created a top of the table team out of, in monetary terms, a low value squad. Whether we can afford to buy higher quality is not the issue; it is how to best utilise whatever funds are available without destroying the real basis of our success.
  17. Quite right kc. Being fickle is the antithesis of adjusting belief to evidence. To quote the Cambridge Dictionary: "Fickle: likely to change opinions or feelings suddenly and without good reason". But your "what you see" doesn't quite capture it. Fickle fans "see" alright, but only scorelines and league positions.
  18. The James in that team is Reece James, the Wigan RB, not Daniel James, the Swansea winger. So yes, the "Northern" comment is apt enough. However, I'd say 7 of the selections are reasonable enough picks: Randolph, Cooper, O'Connell, Stevens, Hernandez, Norwood, Pukki.
  19. You need to programme your Auto-correct DM. Fickle fans are the ones whose positivity and level of satisfaction waxes and wanes purely with results; they are identified by the speed with which they climb on the latest bandwagon, only to leap off again the moment it slows down. The "get it forward" brigade in contrast are not at all fickle; they know what they like and nothing will shift them. They like old fashioned centre backs, two up front, and view midfield like east coast US Democrats view the mid-West -- just somewhere to be flown over.
  20. I'm positive all of the time Trevor; in fact I'm a fully paid up Happy Clapper!
  21. Never mind fickle Canary fans as a whole, I'd love to see your list of fickle Pinkun posters SR (I mean just to see if it coincides with mine) 😋
  22. The club's objective, according to DF in a recent interview, is to become "a fixture" among England's top 25 clubs. That is what we all need to buy into, not the far less realistic aim of becoming "established in the EPL". In DF's words, becoming established among England's top 25 clubs means seasons in the EPL and seasons in the Championship but, when in the Championship, always being in a position to mount a realistic challenge for promotion. That's NCFC's interpretation of "yo-yo club" and a perfectly sensible and attainable goal to adopt. My only comment would be to ask why it has taken so long for our club and supporters to adopt it, when Robert Chase forecast exactly that future for us twenty three years ago.
  23. Pukki had one real chance in the game, a fierce right foot shot from about 15 yards out to the right of the goal. He went near post, and a low shot would probably have gone in. In the event it was body height and hit the keeper. Rather like in our recent games, it was a shot that he would likely have put away earlier in the season, but he hasn't quite got the same accuracy at the moment. Still got an assist though.
