I have decided to head off to pastures new and next Friday will be my last day at the publisher formerly known as Archant. I have been assured that this messageboard will still exist when the sites migrate over to NewsQuest. I just need to decide which fortunate soul on the sports desk will be responsible for moderating the forum. I'll pop my head on here every now and then as a fan under this profile: https://forum.pinkun.com/index.php?/profile/16797-peteraven/ All the best and OTBC!

Huge amount of rain here at long last. Most welcome and a massive relief to the dry and humid conditions we've had for what feels like months. I see it as the washing away of Johnson somehow. Just seeing him again this morning talking up his achievements turned my stomach. Talk about revisionist crap. Reading what RTB above wants from his party too had me thinking. Today's Independent has a fact check (summary here): Beaten Covid. No he hasn't has he? Built 40 hospitals. No Put the economy on track. No Vaccination scheme roll out. Yes, some truth, but so have other countries "Possibly" changed the course of the war in Ukraine by supplying weapons early. Yes he did the latter but no he hasn't changed the course. Levelled up. No Northern powerhouse rail? No Got Brexit "done". We've left the EU but it's not done is it. Far bigger problems remain. The stories from business tell you everything as do the latest polls Strengthened the union? No. Weakened it. Reduced crime? No. The opposite 20000 new police? No New nurses? No I'm glad this liar has gone (Peck in the Indy also states he is the worst PM we've had). So to Truss. I'm worried about her yet...bear with me... she cannot be worse. Cannot. Lying shamelessly/ supporting sex pests and bullies / partying ... and so on. Doubt we will see Truss get involved in those agendas. She is also a hard worker where he reportedly wasn't. He was someone for whom MPs were scared of too...very pleasant up and until the point he didn't get his own way. Then, the anger of the man emerged. Lot of anger in Johnson. Just wish his plane back from Scotland had continued its flight... to Rwanda. Good riddance. The weather agrees. Edit: From Marina Hyde today. Boris Johnson, left Downing Street this morning after an arrogant, lie-heavy speech, in which he displayed his character development after three years in office ā€“ precisely zero. None of his children was there (itā€™s actually quite a small street). He remains a short king over the water for any number of Conservatives who somehow still yearn to be shackled to a wildly underachieving narcissist who openly despises them. Thereā€™s being psychologically beaten, and then thereā€™s ā€¦ that. A few hours later, Truss flew to Balmoral to meet the Queen, who she once wanted to abolish but now finds it more personally convenient to revere. Presumably Her Majesty asked Truss to form a government in the same way you might ask a telemarketer if you can call them back in five minutes.

The point to remember here, when MF decided to sell his shares, it was done with the Club largely controlling the process. The same cannot be said for the Jones family, who are using an outside broker to act on their behalf. Thatā€™s their entitlement and perfectly understandable in the circumstances, especially given the history. That broker has also taken it upon themselves to reach out to a number of other large shareholders, Iā€™d be very surprised if that didnā€™t include the Turners too.

Oh, Pete, given Archant's current position not entirely unexpected. I do fear for this MB after your departure, which probably shows how much I have respected your quiet moderation of the site. Thanks for all your prompt query replies in the past and all the very best for your future career. Now, I look forward to you logging on here in the future under the new persona and really letting rip? šŸ™‚

One day when I'm grey and old my grandkids will look back on this and marvel at the fact that not only were the corporations allowed to get away with it, but people repeatedly voted in their millions for a government that enabled them. They'll be like, "so companies made billions out of the human need to not freeze to death in winter? What the **** was wrong with you guys?!", and we'll have no answer.

First big problem is dealing with the potential strike being voted on at present. The likes of Fabrigant and Mogg who mocked the NHS maybe left to wish they had kept their big mouths shut. I know some very moderate people who have voted yes. Just like in the train drivers dispute they will wheel people out to say the pay deal is good, but this ( like the train drivers ) is not just about pay itā€™s about your safety.

"Cost efficiency" is quite a nebulous concept when it comes to energy. In the recent past, gas-fired electricity generation has been established and prioritised because it was cost efficient (i.e. profitable) in the short term, and that's the main focus of a neoliberal market system. Unfortunately, this led us to the situation we're in now. Market failures meant gas prices were already increasing dramatically last year, well before the sanctions on Russia. Nuclear has definite upsides (low carbon, reliable generation) but some significant downsides (expensive relative to renewables, slow to build, inflexible power output, high technical demands, waste management and safety requirements, sensitivity of uranium supply chains). It's preferable to fossil fuels so if we were in the mid-late 20th century I'd say go for it, like France did, but now renewable technologies are superior in so many aspects - particularly when paired with storage solutions as mentioned - that nuclear represents a stopgap solution at best. I also feel the need to point out that "cost efficiency" should account for long-term sustainability. Strictly speaking, coal could currently be cheap in an unregulated market, but if we regressed back to using it in all our power stations then the eventual environmental impact (habitat destruction, sea level rise, air pollution affecting public health, climate breakdown etc.) would outweigh any apparent economic savings in the immediate future. This is an example of why I believe it's the government's responsibility to override private sector profit motives and act in the long-term interests of its population. That applies to energy as above, but also healthcare, education, housing, public transport, and so on.

Disgraceful. You can infer quite a lot about his character from this, none of it good.
  38. 2 points
Presumably that means you don't believe greenhouse gas emissions are driving climate change, if you don't think net zero is important? One of the ways we could ensure long-term energy security in this country is by turning our backs on the fossil fuel industry (gas and coal won't last forever, even ignoring the environmental cost) and embracing the full potential of wind power generation, both offshore and onshore. Coupled with greater investment in storage solutions like pumped hydro, chemical batteries (can be tied in with electrification of transport and heating), hydrogen production etc, this would enable the UK grid to be far more self-sufficient. We wouldn't be at the mercy of global corporations and their profiteering, like we are currently. Does that sound desirable to you, or is it the wrong kind of security?

All the very best, Pete ā€“ onwards and upwards for you, I hope. You were always a friendly face around Prospect House when I was working there, and I'm sure your talents will be greatly appreciated by whomever you work for next. I echo what others have said in that I really appreciate you having moderated the board with such a light touch. If you don't want to answer this publicly then fair enough, but how confident are you in the assurances you've been given that the board will continue? I know a couple of years ago a group of us talked seriously about the possibility of 'buying' and/or taking over the database ā€“ I hope that in the eventuality that NewsQuest no longer wanted the responsibility of the board, there would at least be a channel for us as fans to have the opportunity to club together to migrate the site to a new host. In the parlance of closing pubs, it is an asset of community value for sure!

Under the existing shareholding, 30% of 616,913 ordinary shares is 185,074. Therefore, given that thereā€™s just 190,800 shares not controlled by the board at the moment, I would suggest that it would be almost impossible for anyone to reach a 30% shareholding at present without agreeing to acquire some shares from D&M. Letā€™s crystal ball gaze for a moment, and assume that the proposed 10,000,000 C-preference are fully allocated, with a subsequent conversion of those shares into the proposed 10% of the revised share capital. In those circumstances there would be 685,459 ordinary shares, with the 30% threshold then becoming 205,638 shares. MA would then have 68,546 shares from the conversion, plus 98,200 from MF, 166,746 (24.32%), which, if combined with the Jimmy Jones shares (23,278) could potentially increase his shareholding to 190,024 shares (27.72%). Or, to put it another way, requiring just another 15,614 shares to reach the 30% threshold. Let the speculation begin as to what could then happen nextā€¦

Had a lovely guy sit next to me as my usual neighbour has not been seen all season or end of last (bit worried tbh). This new chap was at his first ever live match and honestly it was a total pleasure seeing a grown man giddy at the atmosphere and enjoying it like a kid. He p***ed himself every time the Barclay shouted at the keeper and loved asking questions which made me feel more knowledgeable than I am šŸ˜‚. He found it fascinating that we gave the keeper a harder time because he was ex Ipswich and thanked me at the end for sharing the experience. As a bit of a lightly grizzled fan at times it felt great to enjoy the match through someone elseā€™s eyes. Taking a child for the first time must be incredible!

The guy who usually sits next to me didn't attend Saturday. It was replaced with an old-ish bloke who at half time took his t-shirt off, which was disgusting enough. He then proceeded for 10 minutes into the second half to repeatedly call our players "a bunch of useless c*nts" on repeat, until he fell asleep in his chair, drooling down his naked chest. What I'm trying to say is, think yourself f*cking lucky!

ā€˜Ruthless streakā€™ - thatā€™s the side that relied on a series of 90th minute winners due to having allowed sides back at them? Almost the antitheses of ruthless, not that we were complaining! The third quarter definitely wasnā€™t the best, but Coventry arenā€™t a bad side and had clearly stepped up and we moved into a containment pattern ~ not what us fans wanted but the subs soon freshened things up. No one dominates for 90 minutes, thatā€™s just the way it is.
