I know all of this is bad but the numbers of cases and deaths from the UK, Italy, Spain and Germany are all better today. Spain in particular is saying that they think the peak may have passed in a number of regions. There is an issue with the number of new cases where we don't always know how many tests were done eg in the UK we only did around 7000 where I think the aim was 10,000 but had we done 10,000 the number of new cases would have been around 3,500 which still isn't as bad as might have been expected. May be a glimmer of hope ???

I’ll give you a clue. If the overwhelming majority of opinion was that the season should be played out whenever that is possible, LDC would be championing that the season be cancelled. It’s what he does

I can't think of a more serious thing that has happened to the world certainly in my lifetime, the like of which is resulting in such lockdowns across the globe with serious amounts of cash and capital being poured into economies, the likes of which are unprecedented in modern times (post war). Not only that Lakey but the situation is looking unlikely to end any time soon. We heard yesterday they would be very pleased if death rates are sub 20,000. Food shortages are muted, the health service and police service are being stretched beyond all measure, potentially they will collapse. Given all this and macro-political upheaval just where does a football season fit in to this diaspora? You've mentioned the 'bigger picture' but really, honestly, isn't it even just a tad abhorrent to think about the season. As many others have suggested, we need a solution, to move on and only when, and that needs such careful planning to even come out of this safely ...I would suggest a month or two are likely, maybe more? The virus just won't stop on a certain date....then think of all the logistics for the Euros etc etc. ....only then can we think about the EPL or EFL. Even China's new cases are trickling again. Herd immunity or whatever name is given to natural immunity could take years. A vaccine is looking like 12 months if, and only if, it can be tested to f*** that it will be safe. Football! As soon as people get serious and get perspective the better. Even if we were 4th in the table or bottom it's irrelevant isn't it?

Of course everyone, in an ideal World, would want to see the current season played out. Trouble is, it is not an ideal World at the moment, it will not be an ideal World for at least 6 months, and the season will not be played out. Really, people can huff & puff as much as they like, look and consider all the various options, wring their hands and gnash their teeth and delay the inevitable for as long as they want but at the end of the day it ain't never gonna happen.

That b*oody Suarez seemed to put in his best displays at Carrow Rd but I’ll go for Thierry Henry in that fabulous Invincibles side of 2004/5. He was just magnificent that day.

All major football leagues need to be declared null and void. If possible we surely want a new season to start in August, and the logistics of finishing the current one could be far too tricky to work out.

No but they're experts aren't they, and Brexiteers don't like experts, especially foreign ones, and most especially foreign ones who highlight the incompetence of the UK government. And anyway we don't need them, Boris is more than capable of highlighting this government's incompetence all on his own and if he does happen to need any help then we've got idiots like Raab, Hancock and Patel to lend a hand.

Yeah, thanks Thirsty. And 55% are saved through supportive ventilation. It's clearly a nasty disease. Yet it's the different way of looking at the science that's interesting. I like to keep an open mind though I am of course influenced by some writers more than others.

China is no morea communist country than N Korea is a democratic country As to being better informed that has it's limitations. Those being the limitations of folk wanting to be informed, and then understanding and reacting to that 'informing' Are those who believe in anti vaxxing, that we can talk to the dead and that our lives are run by the movements of planets are of that thought because reasoned argument hasn't been laod before them ? So if there’s a 12-15 month lockdown, how many will die from starvation (because they can’t afford food and /or because we’ve run out as there’s no one left producing it)? How many will be made homeless and die from complications living on the street?
  15. 1 point
The idea of a extended lockdown will not work, it’s a short term strategy for two basic reasons one is we can’t afford it, second people won’t comply, meaning either shortage of food, medicine and money, leading to violence and massive problems. We have to get people back to farming crops, they need to be picked and as we don’t have the mass migration from Eastern Europe we need to do this. We need to keep supplies going, we need to get people back to work. Yes the two thoughts above might be the extreme scenarios, can anyone really accept long term restrictions with a state run authoritarian system to ensure compliance, given the numbers of those actually at risk?

Steve Foley told me a typically funny story about the game, which also sheds light on the defeat. I am pretty sure it hasn't been aired anywhere before - apologies if it has. Steve has a funny story for every occasion (easily a book full), and the Craven Cottage debacle was no exception. Steve was Nigel Worthington's assistant, and with him on the touchline he started to feel very unwell as the game developed. It reached the point where Steve thought that he must be having a heart attack, and he could imagine himself dying there and then, on the touchline in public view. He didn't want to let the side down and he's a proud man who didn't want the indignity of being carted away on a stretcher. On the verge of passing out he allowed himself to be assisted by the St John Ambulance paramedics. They walked him down the touchline and as soon as he got out of sight and in the medical room, he collapsed. All of the medical people were hugely concerned, fearing cardiac arrest or similar, and Steve was loaded into an ambulance and rushed straight to St Thomas' Hospital to be assessed. At the Hospital he was given absolute priority attention as an emergency admission and within a matter of minutes he was joined by a Consultant and a medical team, ready for action. The Consultant's first question was 'Now, Mr Foley, please tell me exactly what the problem is?' To which Steve replied, 'It's simple. The problem is, we just can't fookin defend!' Many a true word is spoken in jest 🙂 (It turned out that the illness was a nasty viral complaint, and Steve recovered quite quickly).

The way things are panning out it will be the clubs who won’t want to extend contracts as they won’t be able to afford to do so. It’s a pigs ear of a mess and the longer it goes on the harder it is to come up with a solution that allows the season to conclude. I very much hope the season concludes as that would mean that this horrible situation we are in will be drifting into the past. Wishful thinking I’m afraid.

I feel there has been too much emphasis on "testing positive" rather than actual deaths. In the Mail on Sunday for instance it states that over two thirds of "cornavirus deaths" are where elderly patients already have serious issues and were not likely to see the year out. To enhance my argument when it was announced that Boris had tested positive, I cannot recall anyone suggesting his life was in danger, it was a case of he will self isolate and be back soon.
  19. 1 point
Well I can absolutely guarantee that no clubs will be agreeing to continue with different squads. It simply wouldn’t be the same season then and would give a number of teams unfair advantages or disadvantages. It either gets finished with the same squads in a realistic timescale or it gets voided. I hope it gets finished in that realistic timescale as it will mean there is light at the end of the tunnel from this nightmare
  20. 1 point
This is The Mail as well right? Blame Europe.... who cares who he got it from? Fact is he has it. End of story. The REAL Story is what is being done or NOT done? Where are the testing kits (i.e. you have it, so we need to isolate you) Where are the "all clear" kits (i.e you have recovered, so you can go back to work) Where is the protective gear for our NHS staff (so they don't also get infected?) Where are the additional beds and ventilators that will be needed. What are you doing to protect the economy? (on this issue Sunik is doing OK) Where is the briefing about how many have recovered after falling ill. - Can we use their blood plasma to treat others while waiting for a vaccine? Why don't we know what % of the country may have already been infected? - Are we randomly testing to understand the spread of the virus?

Lots of people don't take vaccines for lots of things but with the really damaging diseases/viruses we aim to achieve herd immunity through comprehensive vaccination (and not at all by hoping most of the population will create their own) - hence the huge and long running outcry about MMR vaccine take up dropping below the 95% threshold. This virus has right from the start been recognised as significantly more dangerous than flu and without a vaccine to protect at least the most vulnerable the Johnson\Cummings\Trump approach was in effect to sacrifice them in order to minimise the economic hit - though that could also have misfired as well as in Europe we appear to be getting more deaths in younger age groups than were expected. I don't think anyone has any real idea how long the lockdown has to last in this country, we haven't tested nearly enough and we locked down too late (in fact we've done everything too late) so for the next 2-3 weeks we just have to wait and hope for the best. After that presumably we'll have a much better idea but I do think that lifting the lockdown is going to err on the cautious side - think Boris's abrupt switch from laissez faire to total panic has unnerved a lot of people and that there will now be a lot of public resistance to easing back in the short term.

Testing is about capacity. It will increase as capacity increases. It is the only way to understand and control this and lift restrictions until a vaccine is available.

I haven't seen anyone with any real influence or knowledge yet say that the season definitely won't be completed, yet people on here hold forth and call others ignorant and ridiculous for even suggesting it might still be. No one on here actually knows anything but this kind of abuse sums up what is wrong with this message board. It's supposed to be about opinions exchanged but apparently you can't disagree with any of the sacred circle or you just get abuse. How about using this period where you can't go out and swig cider to grow up a bit? Saying things like "there's no way" and "there's no chance" when you are just as clueless about what will happen just makes you look a little silly...
  25. 1 point
You’re the one being ridiculous. For the last time, this season can’t be finished unless EVERY team in EVERY league has the exact same squad. There is no way this season will be finished with different players. That is an outcome that has no chance of happening and to suggest it would is pure ignorance
  26. 1 point
Lots of people don’t have flu vaccines despite ‘normal’ flu strains being potentially deadly. Vaccines help create herd immunity but the majority of the population is left to create it itself. The difference being that if you can vaccinate people most at risk of serious complications, then it matters less if you just leave the otherwise healthy people to go out and catch it. The issue with coronavirus is that we can’t vaccinate the most vulnerable people and so therefore need to try and slow the spread until we can. If we can’t get a vaccine for 18 months, would you suggest we continue with full lockdown until summer 2021?

Something we have done on another forum for a few years (and I suspect we borrowed the idea from elsewhere, so it may not be a new idea to people here) is to make a mix of music, strip the data off it, and share it with someone else They then review the music "blind", unless they recognize any of it Someone volunteers to run the operation, everyone sends their mix to the organizer, who distributes them around. No one knows who has compiled the mix they are listening to, unless they can guess. Great way to find new music but I'm not so sure it would work as well here, tastes in music might be too disparate I'm currently running one on The Fall Online Forum EDIT - Once someone has published their review, the compiler reveals the song and artist, and any other information they might think the listener is interested in. The reviewer usually states their favourite song, and a "best of" is compiled

Dear oh dear, different players.why not complete it by playing cricket or darts or noughts and crosses.
  29. 1 point
No they said it’s an ongoing process and could be anywhere from 3 months to 6 months or longer before we get back to a level of normality! This is what pisses me off, the worst off people to exaggerate the actual statements.

Pritchard and Butterfield did well enough in their games against us to win them transfers. Not that they then did enough. Wes was great in his Blackpool game against us which of course alerted Roeder. It was the only thing Roeder did that was great in my opinion and I thank him for all those Wes years.

We should have had 3 points. At the end that would have kept us up. Definitely the best visiting performance by a goalkeeper

I don't doubt some fans have in their mind that voiding the season would mean we stay up, but equally it would deprive us of the chance of a first ever FA Cup final. That is more significant than Liverpool simply being stopped from winning the league for the 19th time. Despite what you claim, there are enormous problems (enumerated previously) in trying eventually to restart the season, especially if, as the government says, this lockdown could continue for months. No solution is perfect but the following has fewer drawbacks than anything else I have seen suggested: All the English football authorities and those of the four other major European leagues agree to scrap this season and fix a provisional start date of the first weekend in September. That synchronisation solves any problems with contracts running out on June 30, and the transfer window can operate as normal from July 1 to August 31, with clubs knowing which division they will be in. The calendar can be arranged so that if the season has to start later than early September, or if some matches have to be postponed because of self-isolation, there are enough midweeks available to accommodate the delayed fixtures. Scrapping the League Cup and either scrapping the FA Cup or scrapping replays in it are obvious potential measures to take. If the virus hasn't gone away, or returns with a vengeance, so that the season really cannot be finished it could be that the PL and EFL clubs will have agreed in advance to accept the tables being frozen and acted upon, with promotion and relegation. The difference from now being that this will have been accepted as part of the deal, avoiding legal challenges.

The following appears on the ecdc website Unfortunately, it is not possible to predict how long the outbreak will last and how the epidemic will unfold. We are dealing with a new virus and therefore a lot of uncertainty remains. For instance, it is not known whether transmission within the EU/EEA will naturally decrease during the northern hemisphere summer, as is observed for seasonal influenza.

Cheers. Will listen to that later tonight (gateway had made an appearance for me for the last 12 hours or so). Your suggestions Ron O have been really good and it's given me an idea to take this thread a bit further. I might post 4 or 5 daily pieces (from YouTube) of all kinds of music (as eclectic as possible) and maybe someone will like 1 (or 2 of them?) ... a chance anyway to discover new stuff to explore. Might be a bit self-indulgent but if others feel like doing the same we could build quite a 'library' of music ideas that can sustain us and expand our minds over the next 3 months?.... because it is looking like lockdown will be continued for that period reading today's news.

Dunno where that first page came from. Anyway have just finished reading Life on the inside, Peter's book about his career and subsequent issues. What a good read. The story of his upbringing, career and recent history including his prison sentence is fascinating. Even for non Canary fans the final chapters on the crime and his rehabilitation should be an inspiration to many. Too often good people do one bad thing which shapes the rest of their lives. Seems Peter has got back on track whilst accepting responsibility for his actions. Recommend this highly.
