Maintain and nurture the philosophy. It is a long term Ajax/Auxerre plan. Just as 3 early defeats this season did not derail the over-arching direction of travel, nor should relegation next. This is a good, true, meaningful identity for us. It fits how we want to see ourselves, it is beautiful and repeatable, even without significant resources. It is something to be proud of. Mere survival in the Premier League is not that by and of itself. Parma

If people still don't get the importance of the collective, after this season above any, then they deserve all the ridicule and derision they get.

Ok... but the Murphy boys have been an absolute credit to our academy, our club and their family. Both real stars in my eyes and they will have been overjoyed that we are promoted.

I start with the expectation that we will likely be relegated. So long as we give it a go in our own style and retain the ability and financial wherewithal to go again I won't be too upset if that happens. I have every confidence that those in charge will stick to the plan. Having said that, I will continue to hope that we might just be good enough to stay up but I intend to enjoy the ride whatever the outcome.

I believe the OP is using statistics in much the same way a drunk uses a lampost. For support rather than illumination...

Yeah this is quite a stretch. Correlation does not equal causation. Emi missed the first few games of the season where there were clearly more issues than missing him in midfield. Without him we probably wouldn't have finished top 2 but relegated is just mental.

Both were brilliant for us. Shows how difficult it will be next season.

Absolutely. Young lads that tried to better themselves. We received an incredible return for them and they owe us nothing. I personally enjoyed watching both of them playing for my team. Good luck to both in the future.

No worries I’ll paypal you after tomorrow’s results. Great job again by you PUPs this year.

Nutty, I’d like to top your pot up by offering £1 for every point ahead of the binners this season, so at present £63 hopefully tomorrow it’ll be £66.

There are two fantastic sides another three or four very good sides in the Premier League ,City are quite capable of getting points off any of the others especially if we add a few more good hungry youngsters. No dull football for me please it wouldn’t work for us.

I believe in the long term plan. Stick with Farke knowing that he gives us the best chance of going back up and with s sustainable model. Many other models particularly the one suggested cost a packet bring in players with limited resale value and at some stage gettin 40-45 points every season with no chance of changing will become unsustainable. See stoke and wba for proof.
  18. 2 points
Farke and this style of football. If only because we don't currently have the players suited to the other, and besides which it's soul destroying. I also don't want to see us starting all over again recruiting "athletes" and "experience". Our future is very exciting if we can keep to this new model of technically astute, fluid and incisive movement players. Let's be the Ajax of the English game.

I personally don’t see Cantwell going anywhere. Despite what people are trying to believe, he didn’t let us down one jot last season and will be a very useful homegrown to have in the match day squad. he appeared a little rusty and edgy in those last few games, but be honest, who didn’t? But in his run of games in the middle of the season I thought he did brillianty. i think he’ll play a part next year definitely.

Who'da thunk it. The only difference between us and Ipswich is Buendia!

People accuse me of being contrary for the sake of it, but the post after post of pant wetting after three games needed someone to stand up and call it out for what it was. A whole new bunch of players and people expecting it to work straight away just seemed ridiculous. But given the amount of concern and rumblings of discontent, it was clear that the fourth game - against Preston, was going to be crucial to our season. It was so important to get that first win and it was a real struggle, but the tenacity and determination were there to make it happen - and Pukki's first absolute quality goal (the one against WBA wasn't such a clean strike). Patience doesn't feature for a lot of football fans, but there were plenty of good signs in the first five games, despite the poor results.

In recent years we've had 2 great play off finals, and a number of exciting promotions with superb days out supporting this team. I don't want to trudge along in the PL grinding out dull draws just to be safe in 17th. lets play with our style and adapt as necessary. Imagine being a club missing out on Europe each season but doing just enough to stay in the league, forfeiting the cups to do so? Not for me. Get in there and give it some. History states we will be back winning promotion again, lets enjoy the ride with our style and brand.

Came across some old photos my Dad took when we were at Carrow Road on the opening day of the 1990-91 season. We played newly promoted Sunderland in a very entertaining game which we won 3 - 2 having led 2 - 0 at half-time. Apologies for the poor quality. The originals aren't great and these are photos taken from the original photos. Here's hoping our first game back in the top division results in a victory!

Unfair on all three. Unlike Sammy 'rat deserting a sinking ship' Clingan, these guys didn't agitate for a move and were moved on by the club.

I'd take either of them back to be honest. We need a little competition in the advanced wide areas. It won't happen due to their clubs wanting more than we'd pay, but if they were available and affordable I'd have either back in a heartbeat.

Watching some of the highlights of Messi against Liverpool my first reaction was, yeah he's pretty good but he's no Buendia I also think Todd has suffered a little with the inevitable comparison with Buendia when he came in for him during his suspension. Re-watching some of the games earlier in the season Todd looked a real talent, Forest away as an example.

    Survival with style.

The points that you need for promotion, playoffs, survival etc. are different, because those are based on the league table as a whole as opposed to the individual clubs. But saying that all promoted teams have a 63% chance of survival is misleading because it depends on the individual team. It's a little bit like saying that Iceland had more chance of winning the World Cup last year than Brazil, simply because European teams have historically won the trophy more times than South Americans, whilst looking past the fact that Brazil are clearly superior to Iceland. In your example, it comes back to what I said about Wolves and Cardiff earlier: Wolves' chance of survival was higher than 63% whereas Cardiff's was always much, much lower. As for the prediction of a top-half finish, well.... I just think you're getting way too ahead of yourself. Maybe 'insane' was a little bit over the top, but I just think we shouldn't get carried away with ourselves after such a good season this year. I'd be happy to just survive this year, and then look to kick on next summer with the youngsters and/or the money we raise from selling some of them.

In the 5 games Max didn't start this season we got 4 points. That's the equivalent of 36 points from 45 games which is bottom of the table / Ipswich form. Following the nonsense logic of the OP, Paul Lambert was that close (1 player) to getting in the top two.
  35. 1 point
I'm sorry, but predicting top ten is insane, and we really need to lower our expectations if that's the case. How often does a newly promoted manage that? Wolves are going to do it this year, but their Championship winning side was better than ours and they spent £60m+ and brought in some top class players, which is something we won't do. Reading managed it in 2006, but how many others have done it since? Also, the 63% is misleading because every club has to be judged on its own individual merits and not based on what other clubs did ten years ago. For example, last summer, I would've said the possibility of Wolves staying up was higher than 63%, but Cardiff's was considerably less.

Good job we rely on stats, these were the reasons that we were attracted to Bundeia and Pukki. I said as an aid. Not to use literally. We used the stats to help us find the players. Good. But the stats didn't tell us that by moving Stieppermann to centre midfield, we would transform our attacking options. That was decided by training and hunches.

😀👍 Some of those writers on Ye Olde Pinkun letters page from the Anti-Watling party are still waiting for their I Told You So Moment. And I still think beating West Ham will relegate us.

If we get relegated next season, then fail to go straight back up the season after I'm going to come on here and delight in posting lots of told you so's, resurrecting lots of old threads as I would have been proven to be correct and the ones with a contrary view proven to be idiots! How good would that make me look??? Yeah baby! 😎

If you're honestly surprised at the reaction then here is a suggestion- you're likely to get better responses by not claiming the team who are likely to finish top would have got relegated if it wasn't for one player.

Not very fair dragging up an old post “shaming” those giving their opinions on whether a HC was gona make it or not in the utter benefit of 20/20. At the same time, there was so much teeth gnashing after three games in. Bit early to call for his head when the team in his season before was not fully formed as one of his own and secondly the players bought in specifically for this season hadn’t gelled yet. BUT nobody’s perfect, I for one was p155ed after Leeds loss at home and there’s not one of us here that can honestly say you knew we’d be promoted via the autos in after Farke’s second season in charge, I thought we’d be lucky to get 8th. Here we are. The nature of football forums eh? I just hope after we get tonked by PL teams three games in a row people can show the same resilience against being rash and aggy and chucking the baby out with the bath water every time something goes slightly awry.. but I guess that’s likely a stretch, and in fairness it does provide some light entertainment on here. Best get that Valium order in early those of a nervous disposition.

I’d much rather be in our position than Sheff Utd’s. We could lose 10-0 today and still win the league by three points. Sheff Utd need to win and hope we lose. I’m not too worried about Villa or who they put out. Confident we’ll do the business. And if we don’t I’m not going to get too upset anyway!

Actually... I have really enjoyed hours listening and watching all the great media output since Sat night. Some amazing insights to our club and the journey we have started. The clearest message I heard was cultural change that was required through the whole club, something that can not happen overnight. Delia, Daniel & Stuart have stated just how important this cultural change is, has been and will continue to be. Can you honestly say that piping off that tripe is part,or should be part of the club's culture? We are all welcome here, as we are all free to post, and free to post what ever tripe you wish,my retort was never to bully, but challenge, and with that tripe you deserve to be challenged and you deserve a chance to respond to challenge back. If its not in line with the club's culture, you will just end up looking like a bin mans big dog.

After watching that passionate, eloquent vlog entry I could not help but feel deeply sorry for her and indeed all Bolton fans. She is 100% right in practically everything she talks about. There tends to be a heavy handed, resource intensive approach by the league in relatively smaller matters like spygate and FFP regs, yet these macro issues to do with club ownership and the utter financial incompetence shown by some that leads to the destruction of clubs or the least situations such as has befallen thr now moribund Wanderers are not dealt with at all. Unscrupulous ownership and poor administration by the EFL is rife. I mean they were seriously giving Bassini another go? Insanity is repeating the same thing and expecting a different outcome. Ridiculous.

RTB I will confess that I should have been on your list. After the early season WBA game I commented "with the best will in the world just cannot see DF will take us anywhere" "when we were 3-1 down he looked completely lost on the bench" Having watched the Canaries for over 70 years, in common with many others, I did not think our prospects looked good. We were simply playing slow square passing possession football mainly in our own half with little pressure applied in the opponents penalty area. Within the space of 6 months we are playing completely different football and the change in such a short time is as they say "AMAZING". I have never seen any side create such a transformation in such a short time. I have never witnessed a "miracle" but this must close to what it is. I sometimes wonder if one of the assistant coaches has changed the style etc. It is remarkable. I also believe this side will hold its own in the premiership. BUT don't rely on my judgement !!!!!

I enjoyed being a bond holder and helping achieve what we have. It's great to be part of our club and a welcome surprise to be paid out so wonderfully and so early. But I wouldn't invest for a project such as a new stand. Except for the very top clubs that sort of debt can be a millstone dragging clubs further down when they slip down from the PL. It all sounds good during a successful season but it would be prudent to remember less than a year ago fickle fans were leaving the stadium as it is now. You only have to look at threads on here from earlier this season to see how the days of consistently selling out were a thing of the past. No way will I invest money to enable fickle glory hunters claim a seat in the good times. If increasing capacity makes good business sense then let the business pay for it.
