It could be thought that City rather cynically cashed in on both and have moved on quickly afterwards. Both their clubs could well be heading back to the Cahmpionship, while we head bacj to the PL. My thought has alwaus been that the PL now is a wreckers yard for younger players development. Players need to ;hit the ground running' and instantly be up to speed as the rewards, and costs, for their clubs are far to great to be not be the absolute prime concern. I wonder how much of their development fizzled out when they left CR ? Compare the improvement to the likes of Aarons. Lewis and Gordon. I thought Steiperman was just a make weight who came as part of a package of Germans.. Zimmerman did not have the 'weight' to be an English CB. There are others for whom in cannot be luck that they have developed so well. Forgotten men like Pukki, Krul, Rhodes and Leitner. Even the rather (at first) gangly Sir Benny seems better every time I see him. Both lads may well be missing that 'work behind the scenes'.

The money we spent on Helveg, Jonsson, Doherty and Charlton should have been spent on getting Ashton in August rather than spend the money anyway in January when we were already looking down... even then he nearly saved us.

If Benitez is a World Class Manager why has he not been able to develop JaM's talents and why is he still Manager at Newcastle?

Thanks all, I'm glad its not just me who thinks football has gone to the dogs... Broadstairs - I think it was Shankly, rather than Clough. I've just thought of another one, aligned to the richest clubs. How can it be right that clubs like Chelsea and Man City can buy up all the 'better' young players and have over 50 players in their squad and 20 odd of them out on loan? I'm glad Maddison went to Leicester rather than Chelsea, Spurs or Man U, where he wouldn't have got regular games. Barkley at Chelsea has only started 7 games (+12 sub appearances) for them this season by comparison to Maddison's 21 games.

TV money - 1/3rd to go to the Championship equally across all teams. Within the Prem, TV money to be allocated so that all clubs have equal income in total. That would put the cat among the pigeons !
